INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND
Currently, most schools use manual attendance tracking methods, which are time-
consuming, prone to errors, and can be easily manipulated. Fingerprint recognition
technology provides a secure and accurate way to track attendance and has been
successfully used in various industries, including healthcare, banking, and law
enforcement.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The current attendance tracking methods in schools are inefficient, and there is a need
for a more reliable and secure way to track attendance. This project aims to address this
need by designing and implementing an automated attendance system using
fingerprint recognition technology for students in classrooms and hostels.
1
several advantages, including increased accuracy and security, and reduced
administrative burden. The use of biometric technology has also been shown to
decrease the incidence of fraud and impersonation, ensuring that attendance records are
reliable and authentic.
In summary, the existing literature shows that the use of an automated attendance
system using fingerprint recognition technology has the potential to improve
attendance accuracy, reduce administrative burden, and decrease truancy rates in
educational institutions. However, there is a need for further research to identify the
factors that influence the effectiveness of these systems and to address the ethical and
privacy concerns surrounding their implementation. The proposed study will
contribute to the existing literature by providing new empirical evidence on the
effectiveness of an automated attendance system using fingerprint recognition
1
technology, and by identifying the factors that may influence its effectiveness in
classrooms and hostels
METHODOLOGY
The proposed system will consist of a biometric sensor, a software program, a mobile
application, and a web interface. The biometric sensor will be used to capture the
student's fingerprint and match it against a database of registered fingerprints. The
software program will be responsible for verifying the student's identity and marking
their attendance. The mobile application and web interface will allow students,
instructors, and administrators to access the system from anywhere on campus.
1. Design phase: This phase will involve the design of the system architecture,
database schema, and user interfaces.
2. Implementation phase: This phase will involve the development of the software
program, mobile application, and web interface, and the installation of the
biometric sensor in classrooms and hostels.
3. Testing phase: This phase will involve testing the system for accuracy, reliability,
and user-friendliness.
PROJECT SCOPE
The scope of this project is to design and implement an automated attendance system
using fingerprint recognition technology for students in classrooms, examination halls,
and hostels. The system will consist of a biometric sensor, a database for storing
registered fingerprints, and a software application for attendance tracking and
reporting. The system will also be integrated with the school's security and hostel
management systems, as well as be accessible through a mobile application and web
interface. The project will be carried out at Osun State University, Oshogbo, and will
involve testing the system on a sample of 500 students.

TIMELINE
Month 6: Integration of the system with the school's security and hostel management
systems
Month 8-10: Deployment and training of instructors and administrators on the use of
the system
The proposed automated attendance system using fingerprint recognition for students
is expected to improve attendance tracking in schools and reduce truancy. The system
will provide a fast, reliable, and user-friendly way for students to record their
attendance, while also streamlining attendance tracking and administrative processes
for instructors and administrators. The system will also help schools to identify
potential attendance issues early and take necessary actions to address them.
The novelty of the proposed system is the use of fingerprint recognition technology to
automate attendance tracking for students in classrooms, examination halls, and
hostels. While there are existing attendance systems that use other methods such as
1
barcode scanning or RFID, the use of fingerprint recognition technology provides a
more secure and reliable method of verifying student identity.
Overall, the proposed system offers a more advanced and comprehensive solution to
attendance tracking in schools, which could result in improved accuracy, efficiency, and
convenience for students and instructors alike
