Chapter 01 – Business and Management
Research
WHY LEARN BUSINESS RESEARCH?

1. A compulsory course
for any type of Master
program
2. MBA program a
stepping stone to DBA
or PhD program
3. Understand the
process of conducting
research project and
apply in workplace
context
RESEARCH PROPOSAL VS. CASE RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Case Study Research
Research Proposal Proposal
▪ Starts with a general research topic ▪ Starts with a case company
▪ Needs extensive review of literature ▪ Only requires reference to literature
(mostly journals) during Part 2 (mostly textbook material)
and industry background
▪ Issue/problem – what previous studies
(literature) neglected to do/focus ▪ Issue/problem - what is happening in the
company
▪ Data collection – survey questionnaire
and/or interview ▪ Data collection- mostly observation and
interview
▪ Data analysis – qualitative, quantitative
▪ No data analysis needed
▪ Output – thesis/dissertation
▪ Output – case study for teaching and
learning
THE NATURE OF RESEARCH
Are these
‘research’?

The word
‘research’ is
being loosely
used to
indicate any
sort of results
or findings
(e.g. political,
economic,
social, etc.)
1. No clear purpose/problem of the need to conduct the
research
2. Issue with no or little relevance to everyday life
3. Collecting facts and info unsystematically
4. Reassembling and reordering data without interpretation
WHAT IS RESEARCH?

▪ Research is a process that people undertake in a

systematic way in order to find out things, thereby
increasing their knowledge.
▪ Research characteristics:
▪ There is a clear purpose: to find out things
▪ Data are collected systematically
▪ Data are interpreted systematically
BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT RESEARCH

▪ Systematic research to find out things about business and

management
▪ Draw upon various disciplines: psychology, sociology, geography,
economics, statistics, etc. – gain new insights from integration of
disciplines
▪ Gain managerial practice derived from theory, and vice versa –
gain theoretical concepts from managerial practice – interaction
between theory and practice.
▪ Example
▪ Attitude of consumers on counterfeit products affects their purchase
intention – from Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)
▪ Employee behavior towards green work practices can be
categorized into several types of green behavior (typology)
BASIC AND APPLIED RESEARCH

society in general

▪ CONTEXT ▪ CONTEXT

▪ Undertaken by people based in
of settings including organizations and
universities
universities
▪ Choice of topic and objectives
▪ Objectives negotiated with originator
determined by the researcher
▪ Tight time scales

THE RESEARCH PROCESS

Formulate and Critically Formulate

clarify your review the your research
research topic literature design

Write Report Analyze data Collect data

FORMULATE YOUR RESEARCH TOPIC (Chapter 2)

▪ Pick a topic that is of your interest/relevant to you

▪ If possible, current topics would be more interesting – E-Wallet, IR4.0,
gig economy, mental health, remote-work, green behavior, video-
sharing platform, etc.
▪ Will require time to finally confirm a suitable/feasible research topic
▪ From a research topic, will refine to Research Questions / Research
Objectives – through literature review
▪ Can go to UPM Online Database to search for ideas/topics, Google
Scholar, online newspapers, industry reports, etc.

HOMEWORK:
Each group to prepare 2 potential topics for discussion
in next class
Literature Review – literature sources, literature
search, evaluating literature, literature matrix,
theory, plagiarism, etc.

Research Design – population, sampling,

research measurements, questionnaire design,
data collection

Data Analysis – quantitative and qualitative

approaches,
