SEXUALITY
• Sexuality is a natural and healthy part of life. It is everything about being a male or
female.
• The most important aspect is masculine or feminine identification.
• Sexuality involves the name given at birth, the toys played with, the clothes worn, the
friends played with the roles and responsibilities at home, and it provides a sense of
self-worth when sexual understanding is positive.
Below is a diagram showing health attitudes that can influence sexual behavior. Which of

Have you experienced being confused because you are unsure of what you want and
your role in life? Are you confused of who you are? Have you experienced identity crisis?

identity during adolescence. Those who emerge from the adolescent stage of personality
development with a strong sense of identity are confident and certain to face adulthood.
▪ Homosexuality - is the sexual attraction to the same sex. People with homosexual
orientation can express their sexuality in variety of ways.
▪ Premarital sex - is any sexual activity with an opposite sex partner or with a same sex
partner before he or she starts married life.
▪ Teenage pregnancies – Health risk associated to teenage mothers is: Danger of young
reproductive organs not ready for birth; poor nutrition during pregnancy; health risk
associated with the young reproductive organs for birth and maternal death due to
high risk of eclampsia among others. Reasons for teenage pregnancy include,
unplanned sexual encounters, peer pressure, lack of information on safe sex,
breakdown of family life and lack of good female role models in the family and
absence of accessible, adolescents-friendly clinic.
▪ Abortion
is the intentional termination of pregnancy after conception. It allows women to put an end
to their pregnancies.
❑ Assessing your health – means evaluating your wellbeing periodically. This includes
your sexuality. Figure out what you can do to improve your health if it is not good as it
can be.
❑ Making good decisions – means making choices that are healthy and responsible.
You must have the courage to make difficult decisions and stick to them.
❑ Setting goals – or aiming for something that will give you a sense of accomplishment.
Just be sure to be realistic with your target goal.
❑ Refusal skill – ’
requires practice. but first, you must feel strongly about what things you want to avoid.
❑ Evaluating media message – is being able to judge the worth of media messages. It is
a big challenge knowing that most media message are very convincing.
❑ A decision is a choice you make or act upon. A good decision is a decision in which
you have carefully considered the outcome of each choice. To accept personal
responsibility is to accept how your decisions may affect you and other people.
❑ Decision making skills will help you make decisions based on your needs and desires.
At the same time, it helps you to resist peer pressure Decision-making skills must be
practiced and exercised in resolving issues and concerns about sexuality. At the end
you have to understand gender and human sexuality with a lesson in decision making.
