MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY

 Measures of central tendency are statistical measures


which describe the position of a distribution.
 They are also called statistics of location, and are the
complement of statistics of dispersion, which provide
information concerning the variance or distribution of
observations.
 In the univariate context, the mean, median and mode
are the most commonly used measures of central
tendency.
Measures of Central
Tendency

 A measure of central tendency or averages is a


descriptive statistic that describes the average, or
typical value of a set of scores
 There are three common measures of central
tendency:

 The mode
 The median
 The mean
The following are the most important types of
averages (measures of central tendency) :

• Arithmetic mean
• Median
• Mode
• Geometric Mean
• Harmonic Mean
Measures of central tendency

 The measures of central tendency is generally called as


average.
 Measures of central tendency describes the
characteristics of the entire data.
 It reduces the complexity of data and makes them to
compare easily.

That is a simple figure which is used to describe the


series which must be a REPRESENTATIVE number. It is
generally called as “ a measure of central tendency or the
average “
Arithmetic Mean
Arithmetic mean, commonly called(mean) is
the total of the values of the items divided by their
number
Data – Type – I (Individual Observations or Raw
Data)

Arithmetic mean=
Where,
N=Total number of items.
Ʃx =Total sum of all the items
Data – Type – II (Discrete Series)

Arithmetic mean =
Where,
Ʃfx = sum of the product of the class values.
N = Ʃf = sum of all the frequencies
Data – Type – III (Continuous Series)

Arithmetic Mean

Where,

m=midpoint=(lower boundary + upper


boundary)/2

N=Ʃf=sum of all the frequencies


Data – Type – I (Individual Observations or
Raw Data)

1. Find the Arithmetic Mean of the marks taken


by students 20, 30, 40, 50, 50, 60, 70, 80,
90, 90.
Solution:
Given X= 20, 30, 40, 50, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 90.

Arithmetic Mean=

Here N=10
Ʃx=20+30+……+90+90=580
Therefore A.M=

Thus A.M=58 marks.


2.The expenditure of 10 families in thousands
of rupees are given below:
