Problem:
Some remanufactured water pumps for these engines may have been assembled with insufficient
torque on the bolt (2) that fastens the impeller (1) to the shaft (3). As a result the impeller may come
loose during operation. Prolonged operation can cause the bolt to act as a "forcing screw", pressing
the shaft and bearing out of the water pump housing.
Solution:
Check the Date Code on the shipping cartons for 0R-0796, 0R-0797, 0R-8348, 0R-8349, 0R-8350,
0R-8351, 0R-8352 and 0R-8354 Remanufactured Water Pump Groups. Use a torque wrench to
check the torque on bolt (2) in the remanufactured water pump groups with Date Codes prior to 6
June 1997. To check the torque on bolt (2), secure the water pump drive gear to prevent the shaft (3)
from turning. The correct torque for bolt (2) is 48 ± 8 N·m (35 ± 6 lb ft).
NOTE: The Date Code is formatted as DDMMYYXXX. DD = the day of the month. MM = the
month of the year. YY = the year. XXX = plant number. For example, the Date Code 180697068
indicates a water pump manufactured on 18 June, 1997, at plant number 068.
