SURFACE AREA
OF
SOLID FIGURES
Problem Let us say you bought a gift for a friend, and you want
to place it in a rectangular box whose dimensions are 8
cm, 6 cm, and 7 cm. If you plan to wrap it using a gift
wrapper, what is the minimum amount of wrapper that
would completely cover the box?

Rectangular Prism

height (h) = 7 cm

width (w) = 6 cm
length (l) = 8 cm
Surface Area
✓ is the total area of all the plane figures that
make up a solid figure.

A=l×w to get the area of each face

Find the surface area of the rectangular prism.

height (h) = 7 cm

width (w) = 6 cm
length (l) = 8 cm

Given: Top and Bottom: length = 8 cm, width = 6 cm

Front and Back: length = 8 cm, width = 7 cm
Right and Left: length = 6 cm, width = 7 cm
Solution:

Faces Dimensions Area

Top 8 cm × 6 cm 48 cm2
Bottom 8 cm × 6 cm 48 cm2
Front 8 cm × 7 cm 56 cm2
Back 8 cm × 7 cm 56 cm2
Left side 6 cm × 7 cm 42 cm2
Right side 6 cm × 7 cm 42 cm2
Total Surface Area 292 cm2
Therefore, the surface area of the rectangular prism is 292 cm2.
Find the surface area of the rectangular prism.

Given: Top and Bottom: length = 20 cm, width = 15 cm

Front and Back: length = 20 cm, width = 10 cm
Right and Left: length = 15 cm, width = 10 cm
Solution:
Faces Dimensions Area
Top 20 cm × 15 cm 300 cm2
Bottom 20 cm × 15 cm 300 cm2
Front 20 cm × 10 cm 200 cm2
Back 20 cm × 10 cm 200 cm2
Left side 15 cm × 10 cm 150 cm2
Right side 15 cm × 10 cm 150 cm2
Total Surface Area 1 300 cm2
Therefore, the surface area of the rectangular prism is 1 300 cm2.
Formula:
Solution: Given: l = 20 cm
w = 15 cm
h = 10 cm
SA = 2 lw + 2 lh + 2 wh
SA = 2 (20 cm × 15 cm) + 2 (20 cm × 10 cm) + 2 (15 cm × 10 cm)
SA = 2(300 cm2) + 2(200 cm2) + 2(150 cm2)
SA = 600 cm2 + 400 cm2 + 300 cm2
SA = 1 300 cm2
Find the surface area of the rectangular prism.

Solution:
Given: l = 12 in

A1 (base) = l × w = 6 m × 4 m = 24 m2
A2 (front lateral face) = ½bh = ½ × 6 m × 7 m
A2 (front lateral face) = ½ × 42 m2 = 21 m2
Solution:
Given: b1 = 6 m
b2 = 4 m
h=7m

A3 (back lateral face) = same as front = 21 m2

A4 (left side lateral face) = ½ bh = ½ × 4 m × 7 m
A4 (left side lateral face) = ½ × 28 m2 = 14 m2
A5 (right side lateral face) = same as left side = 14 m2
SA = A1 + A2 + A3 + A4 + A5
SA = 24 m2 + 21 m2 + 21 m2 + 14 m2 + 14 m2
