Good day Grade 10! How are you doing today? Let’s continue to explore new
things in our Math class. In this week’s lesson, you’ll learn about the

Sequence is a list of numbers which is listed in a specific order, one after another or
called as pattern. Each member or element in the sequence is called term. The terms in a
sequence can be written as a1, a2, a3, a4,…,an,… which means a1 is the first term, a2 is the
second term, a3 is the third term, … an is the nth term, and so on.
Example 1. Find the first four terms of the sequence, given the general term: an=2n-1
Solution: to find the first term, let n=1 Repeat the same process for the second term to
the fourth terms.
an=2n-1 Use the given general term a2=2(2)-1 a3=2(3)-1 a4=2(4)-1
a1=2(1)-1 substitute n by 1 a2=4-1 a3=6-1 a4=8-1
a1=2-1 perform the operations a2=3 a3= 5 a4= 7
a1=1 simplify
Therefore, the first four terms of the sequence
are 1,3,5,7.
Example 2. Find the first five terms and the 11th term of the sequence defined by an = 3n2+1.
Solution:
an = 3n2+1
a1 = 3(12) +1 = 4
a2 = 3(22) +1 = 13
a3 = 3(32) +1 = 28
a4 = 3(42) +1 = 49
a5 = 3(52) +1 = 76
a11 = 3(112) +1 = 364
Thus, the first five terms are 4, 13, 28, 49, and 76.
And the 11th is 364.
1. an = 7n
2. an = 4n-1
3. an = 4n2+1
4. an = 2n (-1)n
5. an = 2(n2-3)

Why do we need to learn generating patterns? Can you give instances where you use
patterns or sequences in your daily life?
