21-25. What are Multi-Grade Classes? Where are they found and why do they exist?
A multigrade or multilevel class is one that has three grade levels in one classroom and is taught
by a single teacher. This means that children with varying skills and abilities, developmental levels, and
needs are mixed together in a class and work collaboratively under the supervision of a single teacher. It
is taught in elementary schools in outlying and underpopulated areas.
Smaller classes are better for improving student achievement than larger classes. Smaller classes
allow for more flexibility in shaping learning programs to individual needs. Pupils in small classes are
more interested in learning, and teacher morale is higher.
Physical Environment
o Since the class room will be filled with students, it would seem to be cramped. Not to
mention the variety of students from different age groups in one room, which may or
may not initiate some form of bullying from the older members of the class.
Social Environment
o Being exposed ta a different age group some student might act in certain ways which
will be acceptable to a different age group but not in theirs.
Learning Environment
o It would in fact be verry difficult to handle a multi-grade class for the reason that there is
a large number of pupils to manage. Unexperienced teachers could have trouble with,
which will result in a lot of stress, which may affect their teaching methods, thus
affecting the learning environment.
