1. Have you had experiences similar with the story above? Did you attend multigrade classes? Did you
like the experience of Jane?

- I did not experience. I did attend multigrade classes. I like because it is an inspiration to all teachers and
students.

2. What other thoughts do you have about the story?

- I have this in my mind that if you don’t have that strong personality and patience that classroom will be
chaotic and students might have limited learnings.

3. Would you want your children to attend a multigrade class? If they did attend such as a class, how
would you help them to learn better in this environment?

- If there is a way, I would have chosen my children not to attend. If the case that there is no way and my
children should have to attend a multigrade class because of the lack of facilities and personnel, I would
do my best to scaffold my children and help them throughout.

Let Us Summarize What We Have Learned!

this module. Use and enclose separate sheet, if necessary. (30 points)

“My Teacher. My Hero”

In the very beginning, it defined that multigrade teaching is a situation in which one teacher has
to teach many grades and by that teacher plays an essential role. It happens in all schools where there
are more grades than teachers. The main objectives of this is to assist students in varying grades in the
same classroom, the teacher must employ a range of strategies and methods. Multigrade classroom is
known by various names in different like “composite” or “combination” classes “double” or “split”
classes etc. The reasons of having multigrade classroom are low number of student’s enrolment, lack of
teachers’ availability, lack of classrooms and school is located at a remote area with small number of
community households. In multilevel teaching that refers to the teaching of students or classes of
varying levels of achievement in a classroom by the same teacher at the same time, instructor must
teach material to students with varying learning styles, expertise, or abilities.

Now, the difference between multigrade and monograde classroom is that the monograde class includes
students from a single grade level, but they are oftentimes, of mixed abilities while multigrade, on the
other hand, is one that has been organized by preference and for pedagogical purposes across grade
levels and ages.

In conclusion, these both kinds of classroom set ups, do share some common features like teachers and
students who have come to school to learn and share their experiences, be an inspiration and to
preserve and develop ones’ cultures and beliefs.

Let us Reflect and Share

Directions: Read the questions carefully and reflect before you answer. Write your answer on the space
provided.

1. What is multigrade teaching? (5 points.)

- Multigrade teaching is a situation in which one teacher has to teach many grades, all at the same time.
It happens in all schools where there are more grades than teachers.

2. What are the possible reasons for implementing multigrade classroom? (1 point each reason)

- These are the reasons, to wit; low number of students’ enrolment, lack of teachers’ availability, lack of
classrooms and school is located at a remote area with small number of community households.

3. What do you think are the roles of a teacher in a multigrade classroom? (maximum of 10 points)

-I believe that the roles of a teachers in a multigrade classroom are to mold and nurture students to
learn, share experience, possess good character, disciplined, and can achieve their future professions in
the future. Teacher must be an inspiration to the students and a good moral example.

4. Are you in favor of multigrade teaching? Why or why not? (5 points)

-As a future teacher and school’s division superintendent, I would refuse to have a multigrade teaching
because as the saying said that “we cannot have two masters at the same time”, so by that how can we
assure to the parents and the society the quality access to education if we do have lacking like teachers
and buildings. So, I strongly disagree, decline, refuse to have a multigrade teaching.

Let us summarize what we have learned

I have learned that there are factors that may lead to the establishment of Multigrade Schools. First is
the geographical factors where areas are isolated by rivers, high terrains, or thick forest. Examples are
the mountainous sitios in Davao del Norte, particularly in Talaingod, Kapalong, Sto. Tomas, and New
Corilla. The children in these areas deserve education just like any other children. Cultural Factors where
parents may not want their children to attend a school in an area that has different culture because of
fear of be influenced and loose of their community’s value and traditions. Socio-Economic factors where
it is difficult to hire a teacher for each grade level when the enrolment is lower than the government-
stipulated teacher/pupil ratio.

On the other hand, I have also learned the benefits of multigrade teaching like the Social Benefits of
Multigrade Schools where children in these schools are stable emotionally. Richer Learning Environment
where learners in different age groups know each other better and can build supportive relationships.
Greater Understanding between Educators and Learners where learners need not adjust to new rules
procedures each year. Time is not wasted while teacher and learners get acquitted. Building More
Supportive Relationships where children in lower grades who learn quickly can attach themselves to
groups pf learners in higher grades. Greater Community Involvement where parents have also skills and
knowledge that they can share with learners. Development of Healthy Competition where all learners
see what is taking place at every grade level.

Anent, multigrade teaching play immensely in rural areas. Though the lack of teachers and facilities are
there yet the Department of Education thru its courageous teachers give its bets just the learners have
quality education.

2. Yes, just to help the student and to give quality education.

3. There should not be a lack of the availability of teachers and school facilities.

Let us Summarize what we have learned!

I have understood that there are common challenges of multigrade teaching such as; The Curriculum-
materials like textbooks, Planning for Delivery-extracurricular activities and responsibilities that are not
school-related, Attitude-some people believed that teachers must be in front of the class pouring
knowledge into the heads of the learners, The School Physical Environment- the appearance and the size
of the classroom, Isolation Due to Geographical Location- most multigrade schools are in isolated areas,
Disadvantaged Local Environment- some of the parents in areas where these schools are located have
not received much schooling themselves, Teacher Frustration- many teachers have not been prepared
for the demands of multigrade teaching. The learners at Different Learning Levels, if you do not carefully
prepare for your class, the following may occur like learners who are not given work to do may waste
time. Meeting the Challenges like the multigrade teacher need to explore cooperative initiatives.

In totality, common challenges of multigrade teaching may happen if you did not set yourself at first, see
the possible outcomes of not being carefully prepared and the absence of the support from the parents
of your children.

colleagues in the school, parents and other members of the community, colleagues in nearby schools,
colleagues in other multigrade schools, colleagues in teacher organization and associations, officials in
the ministries of education, and multigrade planning.
Assessment

1. Teachers need to spend more time, effort, and money to collect educational materials from education

I’ve learned that Teacher Support in Teaching Multigrade and Learning includes Professional Support
like teachers should be paid to travel to meetings, materials should be given to small schools, Staffing
Support for Small school like teachers in small schools must teach in multigrade classes, Teacher Training
for Small Schools like it is very difficult and expensive for them to arrange for trainees to practice in
remote schools and to send lectures to visit them, Economic Support like in order to reduce this
problem, the government should offer bonuses or living and travel allowance for remote teachers,
Community Support like parents can be asked to contribute to a project in the school, Staff
Development like education officers should give these teachers additional help and provide constant
supervision, Quality of Schools and Quality of Teachers like particular attention must be given to the
needs of small schools when teachers are posted and when support systems are supplied, In-Service
Training like education officers could organize special courses for these teachers.

In addition, these are the resources; classroom space, chalkboard, printed materials, electronic
resources such as radio, audio tape, television, and computer.

Part II: Reflection Paper!

I have realized that module 4 awakened my strong desire to graduate and help the students both in
rural and urban community. I am aghast if I would not achieve the standards and qualifications as
teacher because if I failed what would be the future of my students, the school and our country. At this
time my realization is not to get tired and discourage to the new normal but instead I have to persevere
and be inspired by what I have seen and observed.

I know that I am not that perfect but I do try my best. I know where I place myself in different scenarios
in my life and what to do in order not to be defeated. I am the person who knew very well myself that is
why when I’ve read and answered module 4, I felt more confident and undefeated for I have seen my
profound role in the future.

In conclusion, module 4 is an informative piece for the near future. We have to know affecting factors
and where to support to. It did not need the highest grades when you were in college but it needs
dedication to work and passion to teach.

Directions: Analyze the picture and answer the questions below.

If you were the teacher in the photo, how will you handle your class properly?
What are the strategies you will employ? How will you implement discipline inside
the classroom?

- I will impose rules and policies in my class such as “stop talking and standing
when the class starts except when the teacher calls you”, “no eating during class”,
“listen to teacher attentively during class”. These are some examples of the rules
and policies that will help the class be in order. I will never use force to discipline
the students but in some sort of additional exercises or assignments that will
teach them to never do it again.
Let us Summarize What We Have Learned!

Directions: Write a maximum of 200 words, write a lesson summary based on the
topics presented on this module. Use and
enclose separate sheet, if necessary.

In this module I’ve learned how to prepare myself in handling Multigrade

class. I’ve also learned the different principles of classroom Management which is
very helpful for me as a future teacher. And I’ve also learned how to identify the
classroom management that is applicable to multigrade class if ever I’ll be put
into a multigrade school. I’ve also learned the different strategies in Multigrade
classes, I’ve reflected that being a multigrade teacher your choice of teaching
strategies must compliment the classroom management strategies that you will
employ. Therefore, both strategies and classroom management are
interconnected with each other.

Let us Reflect and Share

Directions: Apply the classroom management and strategies in the given

classroom situations. Write your reaction on the space provided.

The teacher writes on the board while three students make signs, talk, and laugh
until the teacher loses his or her cool.
1. What problem is shown in the situation?
- indiscipline of the students
2. What is the cause of the problem?
- lack of respect and discipline among the students
3. What can you say about the reaction of the teacher?
- any teacher will feel the same. But a teacher must deal with it in a way that the
students will realize their mistakes.
4. What can you say about the pupils?
- the pupils needed to be disciplined and to show respect among the teachers
5. If you were the multigrade teacher, how will you solve the problem?
- I will ask the students to state their reasons why are they talking and laughing in
front of the class. Then I will make an agreement to the students to never do that
act again or else they will stand in front laughing the whole class. In this way,
students will realize their mistake and will never do it again.

The classroom is small and does not meet the requirement of a multigrade
classroom. The class has started. One of the boys arrives late. He walks into the
room and shouts his greetings to the entire class. Everyone is giggling. The
instructor continues to instruct. Two more girls arrive late in the room. The
teacher inquires as to why they are running late. The girls react with arrogance.
The teacher becomes enraged and administers an unscheduled quiz. The entire
class erupts in laughter.

1. What problem is shown in the situation?

- lack of manners and discipline among students and the teacher lack strategy in
disciplining the students.
2. What is the cause of the problem?
-the students not showing respect or good manners
3. What can you say about the reaction of the teacher?
- the teacher quickly loses his temper and decided to do a quiz for the student.
1. What can you say about the pupils?
- the pupils are arrogant and doesn’t have good manners towards the teacher.
5. If you were the multigrade teacher, how will you sole the problem?
- If I will be their teacher, I will call all the students who arrived late and let them
explain in front their reasons why they are late. Their reasons must be valid in
order for them to take their seats. They will be punish to clean the whole
classroom including the outside part if they will never answer politely and
honestly. Those who are laughing will remain standing until the class is over.

The teacher is occupied with teaching and dealing with the class’s grade one
students. Meanwhile, the classes in grades two and three are waiting for their
teacher to finish their assignments. These crowds are getting agitated and
obnoxious. The teacher must stop teaching grade one and ask the students in
grades two and three to remain silent.

1. What problem is shown in the situation?

- the destruction caused by the classes nearby.
2. What is the cause of the problem?
- the noise of the grade two and three students that affects the grade one
students
3. What can you say about the reaction of the teacher?
- the teacher
4. What can you say about the pupils?
- pupils are hard to handle and control specially in grades one. It is normal for
them to be playful.
5. If you were the multigrade teacher, how will you sole the problem?
- if I will be their teacher, I will engage the grade one students to activities that is
fun and has real life lessons. I will also set classroom rules for them to follow. This
will keep the students be in order. And if there will be noises nearby the
classroom, I will pause my lessons first and ask the other class to keep silent.
Before leaving the classroom, I will instruct one student to list down the students
who’ll keep standing and talking.

With my greatest will to know, I’ve learned what is BOW or the
Budget of Works. I’ve learned that it is a teaching resource that include K-12 basic
curriculum competencies, skills and objectives; topics for particular skills and
competencies; and teaching method; activities, and time allotment organized in
columns for easy reference and notion. I’ve also learned that the Multigrade
Program in the Philippine Education (MPPE) was launched in 1993 which aims to
improve access to elementary education particularly in far flung areas. Then it
was been strengthened by the Republic Act No. 10533 or the Basic Education Act
of 2013. I’ve also learned the importance of BOW to MG teachers as it serves as
their guide in teaching and budgeting works. It also serves as a material that will
hone teachers’ creativity in the art of teaching. Moreover, I’ve also learned the
purpose of BOW, differences of BOW and the contents of BOW.

the Differentiated Instruction (DI), this is a child-centered approach that is done
by providing the learners with different avenues for learning in terms of acquiring
content or processing. Another is the Varied Learning Activities that defined as
the utilization of materials in activities with appropriation of the diverse culture. I
also knew the lesson plan for multigrade class was a very highly technical and
