Part 1 新题范例答案

PART 1

季度话题

季度新题 01. MUSIC

 What kind of music do you like to listen to?

Well, I listen to a variety of music, actually, depending on my mood. I suppose dance
music is my favourite because it is generally upbeat and full of energy. But also, if I’m
feeling stressed, something more relaxing and calmer is good.
 At what times of day do you like to listen to music?
Again, it varies. I usually listen to music at some point in the evenings. Having said that,
I often listen to music on the way to school, on the bus. Yes, whenever I’m travelling I
like to have something playing as I look out of the window at the world going by.
 Do you often listen to one type of music?
I like to listen to all types of music, such as rock, hip hop, and RnB. However, my
favorite is pop, especially Mandopop and Cantopop, which are a mix of western pop
styles with Chinese elements. My favorite artist is Jay Zhou, a Taiwanese legend, who
first started to experiment with these styles of music.
 What type of music do your friends like? Do you enjoy the same type of music?
Err, I think there’s quite a variety – from R and B, pop, hip-hop, even some more
classical sounds. Yes, some of my friends share my taste but certainly not all of them.
We often listen on headphones so we don’t have to listen to each other’s songs. Mind
you, with some friends we like to swap our favorite songs of the moment.
 What’s the most popular type of music where you live?
Well, that’s quite hard to say. I live in a student area so there’s quite a range of music.
As I said, many modern forms of music are popular but I don’t see one particular type
dominating. In the summer, you can sometimes here many different types of music
coming from students’ rooms.
 Which singer or musician would you like to see in person?
Oh, that’s easy. I’ve always dreamt of seeing Pharell Williams – he’s a really talented
American singer who did a very famous song called ‘Happy’. It’s so, well, happy! It’s
very dancey with an infectious melody and it’s hard to keep still when you hear it. The
video was great, too.

季度新题 02. JEWELRY

 What kinds of jewelry do you like?

Well, I have to say that I never wear jewelry, though my sister does, so I can speak
about her. She’s never without something sparkly on! She likes anything from earrings
to necklaces and bracelets. Not super expensive, but it should sparkle in some way!
 Do you (ever or usually) wear any jewelry? (If yes, when/how often)
Like I said, my sister is rarely without an item of jewelry on, however small. Even if it’s
the weekend and she’s relaxing at home, she likes to wear something eye-catching. I
sometimes tease her about this, but I have to admit she looks good.
 When was the last time you bought some jewelry?
I don’t think I’ve ever bought jewelry for myself, as far as I can remember, but I have
certainly been shopping with my sister and watched her try on a lot of things. She
always asks for my opinion on how it looks. I like that she values what I think.
 Have you ever given jewelry to anyone as a gift?
Errm, well unsurprisingly I last gave a jewelry item as a present to my sister for her
birthday. Let me see, it was a necklace, I think, with a silver sort of spiral shape hanging
from it. She had been talking about it for a few weeks after seeing it in the shop so
was overjoyed to get it for her birthday!
 Why do you think people like jewelry?
I’ve never really thought about why, but maybe it just feels good to be adorned with
objects of beauty. Maybe it helps the wearer to feel more confident in public, or even
helps increase self-esteem? I should ask my sister!
 Why do some people keep/wear a piece of jewelry for a long time?
I suppose sentimental value has something to do with this. For example, my mother
kept her mother’s wedding ring after she passed away. It was quite a simple ring,
nothing flashy, but it gave my mother good memories of her mum.
季度新题 03. STAYING UP LATE

 Do you prefer to go to bed late, or early?

It depends on the day, really. If it’s a school day the following day, I know I’ll feel better
if I’ve had a good 8 hours, so I try to go to bed early. The weekends are another matter,
though. I usually stay up late and wake late.
 Have you ever stayed up late? And what did you do?
Yes, I stayed up until well after midnight to see in the New Year, last year. Even my
younger brother stayed up, too. We celebrated Western New Year with a nice meal
and some fireworks. There were even some games for us all to play. It was such fun.
 How did you feel the next day? / Did you sleep late the next day?
OK, well I have to say, I felt a bit drowsy for most of the next day. Even though I slept
late and got about 8 hours, I think my body was a bit disrupted with going to sleep so
late. Fortunately, there was nothing important to do, that day.
 Do you think children should stay up late?
Well, I think a routine is important for your body and mind. When you have to go to
school the next day, children cannot stay up late and get enough sleep, So, I think no,
kids should probably get to bed in good time.
 When you were a child, did your parents (ever) let you stay up late?
Let me see, well, no, not when I was young, say under 10 years old. They became more
relaxed about it when I was a teenager and didn’t mind me staying up late on special
occasions, but not when I was young. I do remember lying in bed sometimes and
hearing the adults chatting and laughing quite late at night sometimes.

季度新题 04. CHOCOLATE

 Do you like chocolate?

Yes, I like chocolate. I like it in all its varieties, too: chocolate bars, chocolate biscuits,
chocolate cakes, and my favorite — chocolate ice-cream! One of my favorite things is
being given a box of chocolates from my boyfriend, especially if it’s a luxury brand
from Belgium or Switzerland — that’s a very romantic gesture, in my opinion!
 What’s your favourite flavor?
My favorite flavor of chocolate is dark chocolate. I don’t really like to eat things that
are too sweet, and so dark chocolate is just a little sweet, but mainly bitter. I’ve also
heard that dark chocolate is better for people’s health than other kinds because it has
less sugar and milk in it.
 How often do you eat chocolate?
Well, I’m afraid to say I eat it quite regularly! Not every day, but certainly every week.
There’s a coffee shop next to our school that sells chocolate brownies. They are
gorgeous so it’s difficult to resist them, especially after school as I have to walk past
that place to get the school bus.
 Did you like it when you were a child?
For sure. As I said, it was love at first taste from that first time on my birthday. I didn’t
eat it regularly then, but on special occasions, we usually got a little chocolate to eat.
Not too much because I think my parents were worried about my teeth!
 Have you ever given chocolate as a gift? (If yes, on what occasions? To whom?)
Yes, I’ve bought chocolate as a present on several occasions. Let me think, well the last
time was my school friend’s birthday. We all clubbed together and got her a dark
chocolate ice cream cake. It was so tasty and there was none left at the end. It was
quite expensive, but well worth it.
 Do you think chocolate is a good gift to others?
Err, it depends on the person, I think. My parents don’t eat much chocolate, so I
wouldn’t buy it for them. For my friends and younger relatives, though, it always
seems to go down well. It’s far more available nowadays and there seems to be a
greater variety to choose from nowadays.

季度新题 05. WEEKENDS

 What do you usually do (or, like to do) on weekends?

Well, at the moment, I have a ton of school work, so after I’ve finished my homework,
which I like to get done on Saturday morning, I just like to unplug. It’s good to get out
of the house, if possible. Sometimes I go out with my family and other times I meet
friends and maybe watch a movie, or have a meal together.
 Are there any places in your city that you like to go to on weekends?
I usually just hang out with friends on the weekend. We’ll go to a restaurant – probably
hot pot because we all love it. We might then catch a movie at the cinema or drink
coffee in a Starbucks. These are all very common places, of course. I suppose I don’t
care to hang out in any special or unusual places.
 What did you do last weekend? / Did you do anything special last weekend?
Um, last weekend, let me see. Yes, it was my mum’s birthday, so it was quite a special
weekend. We went out as a family and took a boat cruise up the river in our city. It’s a
great way to travel compared with the busy roads. We had lunch on the boat which
was a real novelty and just relaxed and enjoyed the different view of the city from on
the water. We all went out for a meal at night, too. It was great fun.
 Do you usually make plans for weekends? (If yes, how?)
Well, it depends. If I do things with my school mates, we usually arrange it face-to-face
at school. Mind you, sometimes we make last minute plans and then we’ll use social
media or texting to sort things out. It can be really exciting when a friend gets in touch
with a spur of the moment idea on a Friday night or Saturday morning.
 What do other people in your hometown do on weekends?
Err, well the parks always seem to be busy at the weekend, especially if the weather is
fine. Exercising seems to be popular nowadays. You can see joggers, cyclists, roller-
bladers, all sorts really. In the summer, quite often, people buy snacks and have a
picnic in the park. It’s a nice lazy way to spend an afternoon.

季度新题 06. HAPPINESS

 What makes you feel happy?

Oh, I’ve not really thought about that before. Well, for me, I do like going into nature
and escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. Just the peace and quiet of a park is a
welcome break from traffic jams and cars honking. If possible, I like to go hiking with
my friends in the mountains outside our city. I definitely feel happy when doing that
sort of activity.
 What made you happy when you were little?
Err, it’s bit difficult to remember. I suppose birthdays were great fun and it was always
a thrill to open presents from my family and relatives. It’s not that the gifts were
anything super special, but it was so exciting not knowing what they were, and then
opening them to find out. Yes, that certainly made me happy.
 Do you think happiness is very important?
Of course, it is. We all want to be happy, and we all want our loved ones to be happy.
It doesn’t mean we expect to be happy all the time – that’s unrealistic – but happiness
is the aim for most of the things we do. We study hard so we can get good grades,
which will make us happy. We work hard to earn money to buy things we want, which
can make us happy. And so on.
 What do you think makes people feel happy?
Oh, that must depend on the person. I’m not really sure. Some people seem to love
shopping, for example, doing it as a hobby. Other people seem to get happiness from
sports and exercise. Probably for most people, I’d say being with loved ones is a
universal source of happiness. Just hanging out and chatting.
 What do you do when faced with an unhappy situation?
Again, it depends on the type of situation. If I’ve had an argument with a friend or
family member, I feel bad and prefer to be just left alone in my room. I’ll do something
to take my mind off the situation – watch a movie, listen to music, or contact another
person who is not involved in the situation. Yes, talking with friends can be a good
solution.
 Do you think money plays an important part in people’s happiness?
Of course, it does. But it’s not a guarantee of happiness. Money makes people’s lives
easier and gives us more opportunities for study and work; so, in that way, it can make
us happier. But if you become obsessed with the pursuit of money then it can lead you
away from happiness: it can cause relationships to break down because you don’t
spend enough time with family or friends; it can make you paranoid about why people
want to be friends with you; and so on.

季度新题 07. OUTER SPACE AND STARS

 Have you ever learnt about outer space and stars?

Well, I remember learning the names of the planets when I was in elementary school.
We used to sing a song to help us memorise the names, but I’ve forgotten the tune
now. Apart from that, I remember my uncle pointing out some of the constellations
when we were on holiday once – he had an app that you pointed at the sky and it
showed you all the names. It was amazing.
 Are you interested in films concerning outer space and stars?
Err, not so much. I have seen a few of that type of movie but it doesn’t really appeal
to me that much. I think documentaries are more interesting and I remember when I
was a child seeing a man do the highest freefall parachute that started in space. That
was incredible and nail biting to watch. I can’t believe he made it in one piece!
 Do you want to travel in outer space?
I’d love to go into outer space! First, I’d like to view Earth from outside its orbit because
images of Earth taken by astronauts and satellites have always fascinated me. Second,
I’d like to visit another celestial object like the Moon or Mars and see how it feels
walking on there. But most of all, I’d like to encounter an alien spaceship in outer space!
 What would you do if you had the opportunity?
If I had the opportunity to go into outer space, I’d like to go for a spacewalk. I’ve seen
some Chinese astronauts on their missions into space leave the space station to do
some repair work, and I’m impressed both by their bravery and by their skill. I’d love
to be able to do something like that.
 Do you think it’s necessary to see other planets?
Well, there seems to be a lot of talk about other planets and maybe even colonizing
some of them in the future. I think it’s useful to study other planets to help us
understand our own place in the universe and maybe our own history. For example, if
we found out that there used to be life on other planets, that would be fascinating.
 Whom would you like to go with if you travelled to space?
Wow, I’ve never considered that idea before. Well, I would certainly want to go with
quite a big group of people rather than just one friend or family member. It could be
really lonely so maybe to go with my whole family and schoolfriends, too, would be
ideal. I’m sure the lifestyle would be a bit strange up there, so it would be important
to have loved ones around for company and support.

季度新题 08. SMALL BUSINESS

 Do you know many small businesses?

My uncle has his own restaurant. It’s very successful, but it consumes all his time. He’s
there seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year. But it’s very popular and the family
are very proud of him. I also know a good friend from university who set up his own
business online buying and selling signed basketball memorabilia. It took him a while
to take off, but now he’s raking in the cash.
 Do you prefer buying things from small or big companies?
It depends on what I’m buying. If it’s an electronic device, then I prefer using big
companies. That’s because their products are at the cutting edge of technology, and
if you have a problem with your device, they are very prompt at responding to you.
But if it’s something made by hand like clothes or jewelry, then I like to buy some
locally made products because they are unique.
 Would you like to run a small business of your own?
I think I would, in the future. But first, I’d like to work for a big company and save a lot
of money. Then maybe, when I’m about 40, I’d like to open my own small business.
I’m into fashion, so a small boutique with high-end clothes would be my dream
business.

季度新题 09. T-SHIRTS

 Do you like to buy T-shirts?

Yes, I’ve got lots of T-shirts. Fortunately, they are quite cheap to buy in my country so
I have built up quite a collection. I’ve got plain ones that I can wear under other clothes,
but I also have branded T-shirts and souvenirs from different places I have visited with
my school and on holiday, too.
 When do you usually wear T-shirts?
Oh, I’d say I wear T-shirts pretty much every day. If it’s winter than sometimes I wear
two T-shirts under a long-sleeved top to help me keep warm. In summer time, I often
wear T-shirts at home, relaxing, or to go and hang out with classmates at the weekend.
That’s the great thing about them, they’re so flexible as an item of clothing – you can
wear them almost any time.
 Have you ever bought T-shirts as souvenir when travelling?
Yep. When I went to New York as a teenager, I bought a T-shirt, which said ‘I heart New
York’ – these are iconic souvenirs of New York, so I wanted one. I’ve also got a T-shirt
with some Terracotta Warriors on the front, which I bought when I went to Xi’an for a
holiday. So, yeah, I love to buy T-shirts as souvenirs.
 Do you like T-shirts with pictures printed on them?
Yeah, I don’t mind. I like all kinds of T-shirts: plain ones, ones with a pattern, ones with
a logo, and ones with pictures on them. I have a Nike T-shirt, which has a picture of
Kobe Bryant making a dunk, and that’s one of my favorite T-shirts. But I usually just
buy plain black or white T-shirts with the sports logo on the chest. That’s because
these kinds of T-shirts can go with anything.
 What kind of T-shirts do old people in your country like to buy?
Err, souvenir T-shirts seem to be really popular. So, for example, if you go to a tourist
attraction somewhere, it’s common to see T-shirts for sale and people like to wear
these. Maybe it’s a good way to show other people where they have been on holiday.
Apart from that, I suppose any T-shirts with pictures or brands on are common to see,
too. You don’t see many just plain T-shirts.
季度新题 10. KEYS

 Do you always bring a lot of keys with you?

No, not really. I just have the key for my home. Quite often my parents will still be at
work when I get home, so I need to be able to let myself in. But I think that’s the only
key I that actually own!
 Have you ever lost your keys?
No, I’ve never lost a key. I sometimes forget where I put my key while I’m getting ready
to go out, but I usually find it pretty quick. But I’ve never actually lost a key and never
been able to find it.
 What can be done to avoid losing keys?
One thing that many men in China do is put their keys on a keyring, which is then
attached to a belt loop on their trousers. Another thing one can do is to keep it in a
little purse in your bag. That way, it’s harder to lose it if it’s in a purse.

季度新题 11. LIBRARY

 Do you often go to library?

Not now, but when I was studying for my finals in university, then I went to the
university every day to study. I found it a lot more conducive to study than being in my
dorm. It has the perfect environment for studying: it’s not easy to get distracted by
other things, and when you look around, you can see lots of other students reading
and taking notes, which encourages you to persevere.
 Did you like to go to library when you were young?
No, I didn’t. But my mum did often take me to bookstores as a kid and encouraged me
to choose some books to read. I was a bit of a voracious reader when I was young. I
always had my nose in some book or other.
 Do children in your country often go to library?
Not very often. Many children don’t have time to go to a public library unless they’re
pre-school age. Most public schools have libraries, but their selection of books is
usually limited. To be honest, children aren’t encouraged to read for pleasure, so they
don’t have the desire to go to a library to find new stories to read. Most books we read
are for study, and our teachers give us those.
季度新题 12. ART

 Do you like art? (And what forms of art do you like?)

Well, I like looking at art but I don’t really produce anything myself. For visual arts, I
used to like looking at classic paintings in galleries. When you see them in real life you
see how impressive they really are. I tried modern art, but sometimes I don’t really
understand the artist’s ideas. I remember seeing a very expensive painting that was
just coloured dots. That one passed me by!
 Do you ever draw or paint pictures now?
No. As I said I do not really produce anything myself. My mum and my brother are
both very talented artists so I have kind of left it to them to be the artists in the family.
I did try an AI app recently where you input a description in words and the app
produces a picture according to what you wrote. That was quite impressive but in an
unusual way and did not really display my artistic abilities!
 Do you prefer modern art or traditional art?
I prefer traditional art – I don’t really know much about modern art, to be honest.
China has a long history of art, which I like to look at. For example, we are famous for
our calligraphy. A work of art can go for millions of RMB. Ink painting is also a
renowned art form from China. My parents have a small collection of this kind of art.
 Would you like to study art, or work in the arts?
Well, not the visual arts. As I have explained, I have family members that are very
capable in that area. My strength is more in music and in the future, I would like to be
a sound designer for movies. This involves creating sound effects and music to help
provide different atmospheres in the movie. So, while not the traditional visual arts, I
suppose it is still included in the arts, in general.
 Do you like to visit art galleries?
Yes. Even though I am not very creative, visually, I enjoy seeing other people’s work.
As I said, I love seeing original classic paintings in galleries. I visited a famous gallery in
the UK once, and it was amazing to see some old paintings from 200 years ago. Not
just the artistic detail, but the size of some of them was really impressive.
季度新题 13. NOISE

 What noises/sounds do you generally hear around where you live?

Well, the sound of traffic is virtually constant where I live. I suppose you get used to it
after a while so it doesn’t really matter. I think I notice it more if I have been away,
outside the city for a while, then return. It seems to be really loud for a few days, then
seems to disappear again.
 Do you think there’s too much noise in modern society?
Err, yes, I would say so. I wear my headphones a lot of the time when I am out and
about in the city to block it out. So, you could say I am just replacing one set of sounds
with another, but I think the sounds of traffic, factories, planes and stuff is not very
pleasant to have as a backdrop to our lives.
 Where can you hear loud noise?
At my home. Some of our neighbors make a lot of noise. One of our neighbors likes to
watch TV late at night and the volume is sometimes too loud. There is also a couple
who live above us who sometimes argue quite loudly. Fortunately, we’ve got a WeChat
group for our building where we can send a message to ask people to be quieter.
Usually people will quieten down if you ask them.
 Are cities becoming noisier? / Do you think the amount of noise in modern life is
increasing?
Aaah, not necessarily. In my city, there has been a push for electric cars and buses in
recent years. This has really reduced the kind of hum of traffic there used to be. It was
a bit weird at first still having a lot of traffic on the roads but with far less noise. I think
people prefer this and it can make modern city life just a little more relaxing on the
ears.
 What would you do if you encountered loud noise?
Well, as I said, my usual way of coping with loud noise in everyday life – on the street
or on the metro, for example, is to wear headphones. I like to listen to more relaxing,
or at least more enjoyable sounds than the hum and rattle of the city. This isn’t always
practical, though. I remember when they were building a new apartment block near
my house last year and we had to put up with a lot of noise for several months.
