MODULE I: Nature and Elements of Dance

Fig. 1: “Dance is the joy of movement and the heart of life”

Introduction
"No paints nor brushes, marbles nor chisels, pianos or violins are needed to make
this art, for we are the stuff that dance is made of. It is born in our body, exists in our body
and dies in our body. Dance, then, is the most personal of all the arts . . . it springs from
the very breath of life." – Walter Terry.
Dance is a rhythmic physical activity set to music that is either performed for
cultural, tradition, celebration, social gatherings, self-expression and even for fitness and
recreation.

Base on your experience in dancing “marikit”, how will you describe the dance In
terms of the following..

a) movement of the body

b) space (direction and level of movement – high, medium, low)
c) energy
d) timing

Keep this in Mind!

The words
"dance" and "dancing"
come from an old
German word "danson,"
which means "to stretch."
All dancing is made up of
stretching and relaxing.
The muscles are tensed
for leaping and then
relaxed as we make what
we hope will be a gentle
and graceful landing.
Dancing must be organized; it is not enough to jump around the floor with anger or
excitement. Dancing is a way of expressing one's emotions through a succession of
movements disciplined by rhythm.

Elements of dance

Body is the mobile figure or shape, felt by the dancer, seen

by others the medium of the art in dancing. The body is
sometimes relatively still and sometimes changing as the
dancer moves in place or travels through the dance area.
Dancers may emphasize specific parts (head, neck, trunk,
upper extremities and lower extremities) of their body in a
dance phrase or use their whole body all at once.

Different shapes the body can do…

a. Symmetrical – balance shape; movements are practically identical or similar in

both sides.

b. Asymmetrical – unbalanced shape; movements of two sides of the body do not

match or completely different from each other.

Action is any human movement

included in the act of dancing— it can
include dance steps, facial
movements, partner lifts, gestures,
and even everyday movements.
Dance is made up of streams of
movement (locomotors and non-
locomotors) and pauses, so action
refers not only to steps and
sequences, but also to pauses and
moments of relative stillness.
Types of movements:
a. Non-locomotor Movements –
are movements that are done
in stationary place.
- Bend or flex
- Lift or raise
- Stretch, extend or straighten
- Twist
- Circle
- Swing
- Turn or rotate
b. Locomotor movements – are movements that brings performer from one place to
another.
Preparatory movements to locomotor
- Point - toes touching the floor, knees extended
- Step - a transfer of weight from one foot to another
- Place - touching the floor with the whole of the foot (with
slight weight on it)
- Spring – to push off the leg/s in the air

7 Types of Locomotor

 Walk
 Run
 Hop – a spring on one foot and landing on the same foot
 Skip – a step and a hop
 Leap – a spring on one foot and landing on the other foot
 Jump – a spring on both feet and landing on one or both feet.

Space is the dancer’s area. Dancers interact

with space in many. ways. They may stay in one
place or they may travel from one place to another.
Even when a dancer is dancing alone in a solo, the
dancer is dynamically involved in the space of the
performing area so that space might almost be
considered a partner in the dance.

They may alter the direction, level, size, and

pathways of their movements.

Direction – dance movements can travel in any direction. The performers can go forward,
side, backward, diagonal, circular, and so on.
Level – movements can be done in a high, medium, or low level.
Size – movements can be varied by doing larger or smaller actions.
Pathways – performers may change their focus by looking at different directions.

Time

Dance movements can be executed at

varying beats. The timing can be fast or slow, with
pauses or silent beats, or even syncopated.

Energy is about how the movement

happens. Choices about energy include
variations in movement flow and the use of
force, tension, and weight.

An arm gesture might be free flowing or easily

stopped, and it may be powerful or gentle,
tight or loose, heavy or light. A dancer may
step into an arabesque position with a sharp,
percussive attack or with light, flowing ease.

Energy may change in an instant, and several

types of energy may be concurrently in play.

Jazz dance itself is a combination of classical ballet moves
mixed with steps from American popular culture, including African
and Celtic dance influences. While it has become a fine art form,
originally jazz dance was designed to entertain, and even the
basic steps have a showy, extreme feel to them.
The term 'jazz dance' has been used in ways that have
little or nothing to do with jazz music. Since the
Bob Fosse
1940s, Hollywood movies and Broadway shows Robert Louis Fosse was an

Do This!
Teachers may have different opinions of what makes up the elementary curriculum for jazz
dancers, but there are a few steps that are always part of the repertoire. These steps are basics
for all jazz dancers, and they remain an important series of steps to continue working on to
perfect your technique, even as you go on to learn new steps.

Task 1
Learning Basic Jazz Dance Steps

Isolations
One of the key skills for any jazz dancer
is to be able to move parts of the body
individually. For hands and other
extremities this is pretty easy, but to
master jazz you need to be able to isolate
the chest and hips as well, and this is
almost always a part of any jazz dance
warm-up.
It's easiest to learn isolations in front of a
mirror so that any movements you make
with the rest of your body can be
corrected immediately as soon as you
see them.

Jazz Square (box step)

This iconic move consists of a few basic walking
steps, but done in a particular order:
1. Cross the other foot over the first foot
2. Step back with the first foot
3. Bring the feet side by side.
A jazz square is often done with some attitude in
the upper body, accenting the motion. Jazz
squares can be executed in groupings of two or
more, repeated on the same side

COLLEGE OF HUMAN KINETICS

Chassé
Drawing from the ballet tradition, the chassé is
literally a "chasing" step:
1. Step one foot to the side (or forward)
2. Bring up the second foot behind the first foot
3. As you bring up the second foot to join the
first one, immediately step off the foot to
create a skipping movement across the floor
Count is 1&2, so step 1 is count 1, step 2 is “and”
and step 3 is count 2.
Your chassé step can take on a variety of different
looks based on the speed with which you execute it.

Task 2
1. Create a dance combination using the techniques given.
2. Do it with safety precautions.

Hip-hop dance refers to street

dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop
music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop
culture. It includes a wide range of styles
primarily breaking which was created in the
1970s and made popular by dance crews in the
United States.

What distinguishes hip-hop from other forms of

dance is that it is often "freestyle"
(improvisational) in nature and hip-hop dance
crews often engage in freestyle dance
competitions—colloquially referred to as
"battles". Crews, freestyling, and battles are identifiers of this style. Hip-hop dance can be a form
of entertainment or a hobby. It can also be a way to stay active in competitive dance and a way
to make a living by dancing professionally.

Different style of hip hop dance

Popping is centered on the technique of popping, which means to quickly contract and relax
muscles to create a jerking effect
(a pop or hit) in the body. It is also known as
Posing Hard from the Boogaloo tradition, this
technique was innovated by the Boogaloo
group, the Black Messengers from
Oakland. Popping can be concentrated to
specific body parts, creating variants such as
arm pops, leg pops, chest pops and neck
pops.

Krumping is a street dance popularized in

the United States, characterized by free,
expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic
movement. The youths who started Krump saw
the dance as a way for them to escape gang
life and "to express raw emotions in a powerful
but non-violent way."
Krump is very aggressive and is danced upright
to upbeat and fast-paced music. Despite the
style, krump does not promote aggression or
fighting - moves are meant to take up space and
challenge other dancers to feed off and return the
energy, whereas b-boying is more acrobatic and
is danced on the floor to break beats.

Freestyle is a way of dancing in which the dancer improvises his/her moves on the spot, as he
dances, instead of having them planned beforehand (ie choreography). In its most extreme form
it is the very opposite of choreography,
however it can be argued that such an
extreme level can never be reached, as we
all to some degree plan our moves
beforehand. To give an example, one
might put on a piece of music and start
freestyle dancing to it, but having heard the
piece before, and having practiced
different moves earlier, one can never
100% freestyle to it. This can be seen in

many freestyle dance competitions where dancers, although ostensibly freestyle dancing, still

THESE ARE THE FAMOUS FESTIVAL IN THE PHILIPPINES:

1. SINULOG FESTIVAL
Sinulog is an annual cultural and religious
festival held on the third Sunday of January
in Cebu City, in celebration of one of the
country’s most famous historic relics:
the Santo Niño de Cebú. This was the
statue of the baby Jesus that was handed
to the Rajah Humabon of Cebu by the
Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan
in 1521
At the moment of receiving the holy image,
it was said that Queen Juana, the main consort of Rajah Humabon, danced with joy holding this
image of the child Jesus. The Sinulog dance steps are also believed to originate from Baladhay,
Rajah Humabon's adviser. When Baladhay got sick, Humabon ordered his tribe to bring Baladhay
into a room where the Santo Niño was enthroned.
After a few days, Baladhay was heard shouting and was found dancing by the native tribe.
Baladhay was asked as to why was he was shouting and dancing. He pointed at the image of the
holy Jesus and explained that baby Jesus was tickling him.
In turn, Baladhay danced with the little child and explained that he was dancing the movements
of the river. To this day, the two-steps forward, the one-step backward movement is still used by
Santo Niño devotees who believe that it was the Santo Niño's choice to have Baladhay dance.

2. PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL
Panagbenga is an annual flower festival
celebrated every February which takes
place in Baguio City, Philippines. The
term “Panagbenga” comes from a
Kankanaey term meaning “season of
blooming”. This festival reflects the history,
traditions and values of Baguio and the
Cordilleras. It lasts over a month long and
flourishes through community spirit
involvement.
As the Baguio Flower Festival evolves,
new activities serve as opportunities to
enrich the Panagbenga Spirit. They infuse the festival with dynamism, perspective and character
as well as the unique traditions of each group or individual that makes itself or himself a part of it.

Collectively, they animate the Festival: giving it color, spice, substance, character, in fact, an
identity that reflects the richness of Baguio’s own culture. Moreover, the flourishing of the
community spirit is the most eloquent testimony that the Festival has found a home in the hearts
and minds of the people of Baguio.

3. KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL
The Kadayawan Festival is an
annual festival in the city of Davao in
the Philippines. Its name derives from the
friendly greeting "Madayaw", from
the Dabawenyo word meaning good,
valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival
is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the
gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the
bounties of harvest and serenity of living.
Previously, this festival held in the third week
of August every year which was highlighting
the 11 tribes of Davao City.
The festival’s name is derived from the Mandaya word “madayaw,” meaning treasured or
valuable. In old-time people used to display fruits, vegetables, flowers, rice, and corn grains on
mates and were showing the sign of respect for the great year they have had. Also, people were
dancing and singing in front of their homes, it's continued today as well.

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive

dance that combines elements of several dance genres
including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.
Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the
body through fluid dance movements. Some of the
dancers of 20th mid-century break the strict rules of ballet
to express their freedom by using jazz and ballet
techniques. Even hip hop can be a form of contemporary,
that’s why there are lyrical hip hop.

Aerobic gymnastics or sport

aerobics is a competitive sport
originating from traditional aerobics in
which complex, high-intensity
movement patterns and elements of
varying difficulty are performed to
music.

The performance area is 7 metres

(23 ft) square for juniors or 10 metres
(33 ft) square for adults and for aero
dance and step.
In International competition there are
9 different events: Individual Women,
Individual Men, Mixed Pairs, Trios,
Group (five athletes), Step Dance
(both eight athletes) and trapezium
pass. The last four are regardless of
the genders of the athletes.
The performances are made up of four groups of elements. The routine must be performed entirely to
music.
In the competition, there are specific requirements regarding the outfit, the number of elements performed,
the number of lifts performed, the number of elements performed on the floor and much more.
Performances are scored in the following areas: artistry, execution, difficulty and the chair of the judges
panel determines the final score deductions based on deductions that change with each code of points. If
the combined scores are the same, the tiebreaker is the team with higher execution scores.
The long-term ultimate goal of the sport of aerobic gymnastics is to be included in the Olympic Games.

MODULE XI: Physiological Indicators associated with

Physical Activity Participation – Heart Rate

Fig.1: Heart Rate pulse

Introduction
Almost every day, we see, hear or read in the media about the importance of exercise
for heart health. Why? What is the relationship between the heart, circulation, and
exercise? This activity will help students learn how their hearts respond to physical
activity.

Targets:
Learning Competencies
 Engages in moderate to vigorous physical activities (MVPAs) for atleast
60 mins most days of the week in a variety of setting in- and- out school.
 Demonstrates proper etiquette and safety in the use of facilities and
equipment

At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

 discuss the Physiological indicators,

 execute the process of getting the heart rate; and
 perform Physical activity with heart rate indications.

Safety Reminders!
- Stretch your body before actively engage to
dance activity.
- Drink plenty of water before, during and after
dancing.
- Wear rubber shoes. It will help you to distribute
load, absorb impact, and support your foot.
- Concentrate on correct posture and your
dance technique. The way a dancer connects
one movement to another must be technically
correct so as not to twist the body incorrectly,
or strain a muscle.
- Make sure you take sufficient rest between
dance sessions, especially if you are new to
dancing or are not very fit. This will help minimize muscle soreness or stiffness.

1. Check your pulse rate.
 To measure your heart rate, simply check your pulse. Place your index
and third fingers on your neck to the side of your windpipe.
 To check your pulse at your wrist, place two fingers between the bone and
the tendon over your radial artery — which is located on the thumb side of
your wrist.

Keep This In Mind!

Your pulse is your heart rate, or the number of times your
heart beats in one minute. Pulse rates vary from person to
person. Your pulse is lower when you are at rest and
increases when you exercise (more oxygen-rich blood is
needed by the body when you exercise). Knowing how to
take your pulse can help you evaluate your exercise
program.
How to take your pulse
1. Place the tips of your index, second and third
fingers on the palm side of your other wrist below
the base of the thumb. Or, place the tips of your index and second fingers on your lower
neck on either side of your windpipe.
2. Press lightly with your fingers until you feel the blood pulsing beneath your fingers. You
may need to move your fingers around slightly up or down until you feel the pulsing.
3. Use a watch with a second hand, or look at a clock with a second hand.
4. Count the beats you feel for 10 seconds. Multiply this number by six to get your heart rate
(pulse) per minute.

Count your pulse: _____ beats in 15 seconds x 4 = _____ beats/minute

Remember!

and most notably self-efficacy. These

attributes in turn are important
determinants of current and future
participation in physical activity.
5. Sedentary behaviors such as sitting
and television viewing contribute to
health risks both because of and
independently of their impact on
physical activity.
6. Health-related behaviors and disease
risk factors track from childhood to
adulthood, indicating that early and
ongoing opportunities for physical activity are needed for maximum health benefit.
7. To be effective, physical activity programming must align with the predictable
developmental changes in children's exercise capacity and motor skills, which
affect the activities in which they can successfully engage.
8. Frequent bouts of physical activity throughout the day yield short-term benefits for
mental and cognitive health while also providing opportunities to practice skills and
building confidence that promotes ongoing engagement in physical activity.
9. Distinct types of physical activity address unique health concerns and contribute
in distinct ways to children's health, suggesting that a varied regimen including
aerobic and resistance exercise, structured and unstructured opportunities, and
both longer sessions and shorter bouts will likely confer the greatest benefit.

What happens with exercise?

Just as exercise strengthens other
muscles in your body, it helps your
heart muscle become more efficient
and better able to pump blood
throughout your body. This means
that the heart pushes out more blood
with each beat, allowing it to beat
slower and keep your blood pressure
under control.
When you exercise regularly, your
body's tissue (including the heart)
does a better job of pulling oxygen from your blood. This allows your heart to work better
under stress and keeps you from getting winded during high-intensity activities.
Physical activity also allows better blood flow in the small blood vessels around your heart.
Clogs in these arteries can lead to heart attacks. There's also evidence that exercise
60

helps your body make more branches and connections between these blood vessels, so
there are other routes for your blood to travel if the usual path is blocked by narrow
arteries or fatty deposits.
Exercise also increases your levels of HDL cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol that lowers
heart disease risk by flushing the artery-clogging LDL or "bad" cholesterol out of your
system.
Along with lowering your risk for heart disease, exercise:
1. Keeps your weight down.
2. Improves your mood.
3. Lowers your risk for some types of cancer.
4. Improves your balance.
5. Reduces your risk of osteoporosis by increasing your bone mass.
6. Gives you more energy.
7. Helps you sleep better.

Keep this in Mind!

Become a dance teacher.

This is perhaps one of the most popular career choices for dancers. You can teach at a
studio, in a public school system with the proper qualifications, or a college dance program with
a Master’s degree.
Being a dance teacher allows you to remain active physically while sharing your
knowledge with others. You can also remain creative through choreographing routines for class
and performances regularly. It helps to know which age group you want to teach, as some will
require extra training or college degrees.
This is a great option that helps extend the longevity of a dance career.
Without dance teachers, the field of dance as we know it today would not exist!
These are the career and opportunity of being a dancer:
1) Dance Photographer/Videographer:
There is a high demand for
photographers and videographers that
have a knack for capturing dance. If
you’ve always been fascinated by
photography or videography and
capturing the human experience, try your
hand at applying that to the art form you
know best–dance. Grab a friend and offer
to take some photos or videos of them to practice and begin building a portfolio.
2) Choreographer: Raise your hand if you’re
constantly getting called out by dance teachers for
changing the footwork or arms in class combinations!
If so, chances are you might have a natural talent for
choreography. Choreographers are needed in both the
commercial and concert dance worlds, so there are
various opportunities, funding, and training
opportunities available. Challenge yourself to set a
three-minute solo on yourself to begin finding your
voice as a choreographer..

3) Personal Trainer: Similar to being a fitness

or somatic instructor, dancers make excellent
personal trainers because they’re not afraid to
break a sweat and push outside of their comfort
zone. Clients will likely also appreciate your
wisdom regarding techniques to develop long,
lean muscles. Most personal training
certification programs take around 6 months,
however they are not necessary to begin working with clients.
4) Lighting or Costume Designer: A
dance performance on a proscenium stage
is nothing without lighting and costumes,
both of which are key in effectively
communicating the choreographer’s vision.
As a dancer, you’ll know firsthand what is
comfortable to dance in and how to engage
the audience via subtle or dramatic lighting.
If you’re interested in pursuing this career
path, try reaching out to a lighting or
costume designer and schedule an
informational coffee date to pick their brain.
5) Stage Manager: While the stage production
crew might be under-appreciated by many, a
performance simply cannot run smoothly
without a highly skilled stage manager calling
the shots behind-the-scenes. If you have
excellent organizational, planning, and
leadership skills this might be the job for you.
Try asking a stage manager at your local theater
if you might be able to shadow them to get a
better idea of what the job entails.
6) Arts Administrator: Small and upcoming dance companies are always looking for help with
development, fundraising, management, event planning, and marketing. Arts administration is a
great way to stay connected to the field. If you consider yourself to be a skilled multi-tasker and
communicator, then arts administration might just be the field for you. Test the waters by applying
for an internship or offering to help out your company’s artistic director for a reduced rate.

7) Dance Writer: Although some may

say print is dying, there has never been
a better time to become a dance blogger
or critic. There are various online dance
publications looking for writers with
dance experience to share their
expertise with the public. Next time you
see a dance performance, take a stab at
writing a review afterwards to get a head
start on building your portfolio.

8) Dance teacher: Becoming a dance

teacher is one of the most popular
career options for dancers, particularly
for those who are mid-career, retiring, or
taking a break from performing
regularly. Teaching dance and training
the next generation of dancers can be
incredibly rewarding work, however it
does require a great deal of patience
and flexibility. Before pursuing a
teaching job, think about what age you
might want to work with.

Do This!

1. Create your own Dance Resume assuming that you are applying for a job in a Dance

1. objectives
2. job position
3. expertise
2. Promote to your family, friends, and/or neighbors that you are seeking a dance job

Keep This In Mind!

Event management is the application

of project management to the creation and
development of small and/or large-scale
personal or corporate events such
as festivals, conferences, ceremonies,
weddings, formal parties, concerts,
or conventions. It involves studying the
brand, identifying its target audience,
devising the event concept, and coordinating
the technical aspects before actually
launching the event .
The process of planning and coordinating the event is usually referred to as event planning and
which can include budgeting, scheduling, site selection, acquiring necessary permits,
coordinating transportation and parking,
arranging for speakers or entertainers,
arranging decor, event security, catering,
coordinating with third party vendors, and
emergency plans. Each event is different in its
nature so process of planning & execution of
each event differs on basis of type of event.
The event manager is the person who plans and
executes the event, taking responsibility for the
creative, technical, and logistical elements. This
includes overall event design, brand building,
marketing and communication strategy, audio-visual production, script writing, logistics,
budgeting, negotiation, and client service.

Criteria are defined as the plural form of criterion, the standard by which something is judged or
assessed.

A Rubric is a scoring guide that helps teachers evaluate student performance, based on a
range of criteria. A rubric lists the criteria, or characteristics, that student work should exhibit and
describes specific quality levels for those criteria.
How is a rubric structured? Like a matrix.
A rubric is a matrix of criteria and their descriptors. The left side of a rubric matrix lists
the criteria for the expected product or performance. Across the top of the rubric matrix is
the rating scale that provides a set of values for rating the quality of performance for each
criterion. Descriptors under the rating scale provide examples or concrete indicators for each
level of performance.

Grading System
The K to 12 Basic Education Program uses a standards- and competency-based
grading system. These are found in the curriculum guides. All grades will be based on the
weighted raw score of the learners’ summative assessments. The minimum grade
needed to pass a specific learning area is 60, which is transmuted to 75 in the report card.
The lowest mark that can appear on the report card is 60 for Quarterly Grades and Final
Grades.
For these guidelines, the Department will use a floor grade considered as the lowest
possible grade that will appear in a learner’s report card.

Learners from Grades 1 to 12 are graded on Written Work, Performance Tasks,

and Quarterly Assessment every quarter. These three are given specific percentage
weights that vary according to the nature of the learning area.
