3) Transformative Leader Scholarship
The most important piece of transformative leadership given by me to the
organization has been to use my creative and intellectual abilities for the betterment of the organisation. I have been a career foreign service officer for almost 14 years and I often discuss work situations with my advisor/mentor. I do not need to get basic tips from my mentor on how the job must be done and how I must perform to the best of my abilities in order to make a name and reputation for myself in the organization. 2. I remember vividly in 2017-18 when I was serving in the projects division of the Ministry. I was tasked with implementing the policies of the Ministry in the construction of new buildings/properties abroad, including Embassies and other diplomatic premises abroad. I had just joined the new department and was settling into my new role and was quite worried about how to achieve the organizational budgetary and other targets with no prior experience in this domain. The department of projects had a huge budget outlay due to the nature of the job involved and had the task of renting properties abroad temporarily till the government was able to complete the premises in the country. We are all aware that rents in the market are very high especially in the western countries and diplomatic premises are hired mostly in the central business areas of the city where the rates are very high. 3. I discussed the nature of the problem with my team and the feedback I got was that, that rental values should be avoided unless there are very exceptional circumstances necessitating the same. Rental properties in western countries can be taken a bit far away from the city centre where the rental values are not so high, we all know that the budget of developed countries and a developing country like India stand poles apart. I also told my team that we should follow the best practices seen in various parts of the world in the real estate/construction sector and the same should be replicated when we build our premises in a particular country, help should be taken from the local construction industry experts and architects should be hired that know the rules/regulations of the host country. The team followed my advice very wisely and I somehow followed my intellectual capabilities of being a team leader and a good strategist by spending the budget given to his department very wisely, avoiding cost overruns and following the best practices used in the country where the project was being run by hiring experts in the area resulting in completion of the projects on time and building new assets with sustainability.
