(a) Hadiths are broadly classified as sound (sahih), good (hasan), and weak (dha’if). Write a detailed
account of these three categories of Hadiths. [10]

PARAGRAPH # 1: Discuss Rules Sanad concisely

PARAGRAPH # 2: Discuss Rules of Matn concisely

PARAGRAPH # 3 (SAHIH HADITH):

- If a hadith passes all rules perfectly beyond any doubt, then Muhaddithun classify such hadith as
Sahih (Genuine) hadith.
- The chain of narrators is unbroken, the dates of birth and death of narrators who come before and
after in the chain overlap, all narrators in the chain are found to be pious, truthful, careful, and
intelligent, and have a sharp and excellent memory.
- One of such Sahih Ahadith is mentioned by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim that the Prophet
(PBUH) said: “None of you believe until you want for your brother what you want for yourself.”

PARAGRAPH # 4 (HASAN HADITH):

- If a hadith passes all rules perfectly with one or a few minor doubts, then Muhaddithun classify such hadith
as Hasan (strong) hadith.
- The text is found to be true but there are some doubts related to the chain of narrators or a narrator.
For example, a name in the chain is missing or one of the narrators in the chain is having slightly
defective memory but there is no reason to believe that the Hadith is not a good one.
- One of such hadith Hasan Ahadith is mentioned by Imam Abu Daud and Imam Ibne Majah that the
Prophet (PBUH) said: “He who misses three Friday prayers (continuously) out of negligence,
Allah will put a seal on his heart.”

PARAGRAPH # 5 (DHAIF HADITH):

- If a hadith fails to pass any rule of Sand or Matn, then Muhaddithun classify such hadith as Dhaif
(weak) hadith.
- If one of the narrators is found to be a liar or has a defective memory that his words cannot be
believed, then the authenticity of the hadith is not fully established.
- Hadith may also be termed as weak if the text of hadith contradicts with Quranic injunctions or with
another reliable hadith.

Q (b) What is the purpose of having false Hadiths in Hadith collections? [4]

- The sayings falsely attributed to Prophet Mohammad ‫ ﷺ‬are known as Fabricated Ahadith (Mauzu).
- The Prophet (PBUH) warned Muslims about attributing lies to him.
- He (PBUH) said: “Whoever intentionally attributes a lie against me, should prepare his seat in the Fire.”
- Sometimes Ahadith were fabricated intentionally to misguide the Muslim community.
- This was when people lied about Ahadith.
- Sometimes Ahadith were fabricated unintentionally.
- This was when students quoted the words of their teachers as Ahadith or quoted something else due to
weak memory.
- The successors of successors divided Ahadith into sahih, hasan, dhaif, and mauzu.
- They made separate collections to highlight Mauzu Ahadith which are called Mauzu’at.
- They made such collections to guide Muslims about fabricated Ahadith.
- They did not want the authentic Ahadith getting mixed with the fabricated ones.
