Formal Core Competency Reflection

Personal Awareness & Responsibility

Strengths

1. I can set goals, regulate my emotions, and persevere in difficult situations.

a. When I do group projects in school and complete my duties at work, I constantly
track the progress and have them done above the standard level. If the results are
not ideal, I would aim higher for the next time. I make myself calm and wouldn’t
bring any personal emotions when doing work both in school and at work.

2. I am learning to take care of myself.

a. As I am growing up, I know that living is not just to interact with others, get
schoolwork done on time, be the best, or be qualified for certain careers. On top of
all those, I should be in an ideal condition so that I can bring a better expression
before putting effort into this world. Also, I take some breaks regularly to have
personal time and recharge from all the work I have done through.

Area of Improvement

1. I can express my needs and seek help when needed.

a. I don’t easily show my ideas when I think the work is not perfect because I don’t feel
confident showing it. As a result, I hesitated to ask for help because all I thought
about would be people judging me and disliking my ideas. To solve this problem, I
should keep telling myself that being perfect is not everything, and progress matters
more.

Social Responsibility

Strengths

1. I value diversity, defend human rights, advocate for others, and act ethically in all my
interactions, including online.
a. I am willing to listen and learn different people's perspectives from every part of the
world. I can respect and not judge other cultures. I also enjoy trying their cuisine and
learning the traditions. When I approach people with a different cultural background
from me, both online and in real life, I watch my manner and language to show my
greatest respect.

2. I have positive peer and intergenerational relationships.

a. I am always trying my best to be kind and nice to everyone I meet throughout my
life. Even if they are my family members who are the people I am closest with or my
best friends I have known for a long time, I still show them respect and keep the
relationship bonds strong and stable. When interacting with people that I don’t
know very well, I listen to their idea well and give positive feedbacks that are
informative and helpful so that the relationships can go well.

Area of Improvement

1. I am aware of my community and environment and work independently and

collaboratively for the benefit of others.
a. As an introvert, I don’t participate in the community as much as others. When I was
in middle school, I volunteered at an orphanage in Taiwan to be an art mentor and
prepare lunch for kids twice a month, and it lasted for months. After moving to
Canada, I focused more on school and building my comfort zone by making more
friends only at school. Therefore, I participated less in my community than I did
before. To move forward, I should start stepping out of my small comfort zone and
putting more effort into the community by joining local organizations while exploring
more individual opportunities.

Critical Thinking

Strengths

1. I understand the purpose for my work and consider my audience.

a. I carefully follow through with the instruction before completing work so that I don’t
confuse the audience. To understand the purpose of my work, I often ask questions
and make sure I get all the information to proceed to the next step. While doing the
work, I would think about different points of view, not just from my angle, but also
from other people’s views.

2. I can explore and create new ways to represent my learning around a variety of
problems, events, issues, and needs.
a. At school, I can use different techniques to present my work, such as typing,
drawing, infographics, photos, PowerPoint, and creating videos. Depending on the
type of assignment, I can find the best and most creative way to demonstrate my
learning using those techniques.

Area of Improvement

1. I can analyze and make defensible judgements, draw conclusion and consider a variety
of perspectives.
a. It is hard for me to analyze and draw conclusions because I can have many thoughts
going on and think too much sometimes. As an overthinker, I consider various
perspectives, which can confuse me and make me find solutions or the main idea
difficult. Moving forward, I can focus on the topic and be more specific to draw a
conclusion.
Creative Thinking

Strengths

1. I can create new and unique ideas that may provide new perspectives that influence
how people think about topics.
a. I can come up with some new ideas that other people don’t think about and be able
to use persuasive language to express the topic of the idea. But it often takes some
time for me to think about one.

2. I can use the environment around me, including others, and my unconscious mind to
generate new ideas.
a. When thinking about a new idea, I often use the surrounding environment as a
reference or element. I know that not all ideas can be created by myself, there’s a
lot of time that the environment and people influence me to draw, write, and create
a variety of products.

Area of Improvement

1. I can persevere and understand that failure can be productive.

a. I am scared of failure because I thought I would be judged and never be successful
again. It is not good that the fear stops me from moving forward and trying new
things. I should keep on trying and tell myself that failure is never the end of a
journey, I can learn from it and be more successful next time. There are always other
chances out there.

Communication

Strengths

1. I can work with other students to plan, inquire, and solve problems.
a. At school, I enjoy doing group work and exchanging ideas with different people. I like
the process when planning the project with peers. It is better to put everyone’s ideas
together so that we can solve the problem and make a conclusion faster with better
quality.

2. I can reflect on the processes of learning and share what I have learned.
a. I always plan out the process of learning that takes me time to do so that I can
reflect and improve for the next time. The process of learning is something
important that needs to be adjusted when it no longer works for me. I am also able
to share and even use the knowledge to teach other people who might be struggling
with it.
Area of Improvement

1. I can engage in deep and meaningful inquiry for a variety of purposes and audiences.
a. When talking about an inquiry, I can fully understand the topic and the meaning, but
I have a hard time engaging in it deeply and finding something meaningful.
Depending on the topics, some of them I am interested in I can engage in them very
deeply, but other ones take me more time to discover.

Personal & Cultural Identity

Strengths

1. I understand that culture is a broad concept that includes things like my geographic
region, nationality, sex/gender, age, ethnicity, sexuality, language, and religion.
a. I like learning about other people’s cultures, as well as sharing my own. I know that
culture is not just about the country and the traditions, it is basically everything that
makes an individual stands out. It is broad but important in every detail, and it is
hard to tell just by the cover.

2. I understand what is important to me.

a. I know and really care about what I value in this world. I care about my family as the
number one priority above everything because my family makes me who I am today,
and I have learned and grown from it. Other than that, I know what is important in
my life that I need to understand and put effort into so it makes me a better person
and more successful to survive in this world.

Area of Improvement

1. I can define myself in terms of my relationship with others and the world.
a. It is hard for me to make strong relationships and bonds because I don’t easily open
my mind, so I sometimes feel lost about who I am in this world and what I mean to
be here. Though I am still socially active, and I can make relationships with people
easily, I don’t think those relationships are authentic because I always think about
how they might be ended up. Therefore, it seems like I don’t really involve in this
world and have any purpose. I shouldn’t think too much about whether it is
authentic or not, sometimes I just have to try and accept anything that might not go
well.
