Final Mock part 1 & 2
Final Mock exam part 1&2

Draw a cross-sectional view of a two-stage air compressor to explain its construction.

Refer to your sketch for question mentioned above, briefly describe main function for components such as
1. Intercooler,
2. Aftercooler,
3. Unloader valve,
4. Moisture drain valve.

• During compression, the temperature of compressed air goes up

and this intercooler is provided to cool this compressed air to
safe value.
• A heat exchanger which cools the compressed air so that it can
be compressed again and again.
Refer to your sketch for question mentioned above, briefly describe main function for components such as
1. Intercooler,
2. Aftercooler,
3. Unloader valve,
4. Moisture drain valve.

• To reduce air volume after it has been compressed to the final

pressure.
• To reduce final discharge air temperature thus air bottle size can
be reduced.
Refer to your sketch for question mentioned above, briefly describe main function for components such as
1. Intercooler,
2. Aftercooler,
3. Unloader valve,
4. Moisture drain valve.

• In general, all air compressors are equipped with one valve on each heat exchanger
(intercooler and aftercooler), but it does double duty.
• this valve is remained open, while the compressor is standing by, and helps reduce the
load on the electric motor when starting the compressor (unloader function).
• after the electric motor has reached operating speed, this valve will be closed by a
solenoid coil, and will remain closed as long as the compressor is in operation.
• Just before the compressor stops, this valve will open again and release all moisture which
has accumulated in the heat exchangers (intercooler and aftercooler) during a cooling
process of a compressed air (moisture drain function)
Refer to figure, briefly explain main function for air bottle essential mountings such as
1. Safety valve (PRV),
2. Fusible plug,
3. Pressure gauge,
4. Pressure reducing valve.

• Safety valve (PRV): A relief valve is fitted on

the air bottle to protect against overpressure,
by relieving excess pressure from a bottle
when pressure reach Maximum Allowance
working pressure (MAWP) plus 10%
Refer to figure, briefly explain main function for air bottle essential mountings such as
1. Safety valve (PRV),
2. Fusible plug,
3. Pressure gauge,
4. Pressure reducing valve.

• Fusible plug: A fusible plug is fitted in the

bottle with a separate connection leading out
of the engine room so that in the event of
fire, this plug will melt and relieve all the air to
the outside atmosphere.
Refer to figure, briefly explain main function for air bottle essential mountings such as
1. Safety valve (PRV),
2. Fusible plug,
3. Pressure gauge,
4. Pressure reducing valve.

• The pressure gauge on the compressed air bottle

indicates the pressure in the bottle and thus
performs the function of emergency device as an
emergency device, as it is very important to
know and control the pressure value at any time
of operation the system.
Refer to figure, briefly explain main function for air bottle essential mountings such as
1. Safety valve (PRV),
2. Fusible plug,
3. Pressure gauge,
4. Pressure reducing valve.

• Pressure reducing valves play a very important

role in a ship's compressed air system.
• Since the two-stage compressor operates in the
range of 20-30 bar, it is necessary to reduce the
pressure for some components, since the
maximum allowance working pressure of these
elements is possibly much less than in the main
air bottle pressure.
• e.g. control air for the main engine, a maximum
operating pressure of 12 bar is required.
Refer to figure, describe with aid of sketch, what is happen to the Solids, Heavy phase-Water and Light Phase-
Oil if the gravitational force is increase, by using centrifugal force.

• If the gravitational force is increased, by using

centrifugal force, the separation effect is much
greater.
State the differences between purifier and clarifier.

Purifier
• When a centrifuge is arranged for separating two liquids of different densities, it
is known as a purifier.
Clarifier
• When a centrifugal is arranged to remove only impurities and a small amount of
water, it is called as the clarifier.
Describe, with aid of sketch, the shipboard fuel treatment system
Briefly describe what is heat exchanger and its use at shipboard auxiliary systems.

Heat Exchanger: a device for transferring heat from one medium to another,

• The fluids are separated by a solid wall to

prevent mixing.
• They are widely used in space heating,
refrigeration, air conditioning, power stations,
chemical plants, and sewage treatment.
Describe, with aid of sketches, the construction of heat exchangers uses parallel-flow, counter-flow, and a
crossflow.
Describe, with aid of sketch, the zinc anode galvanic corrosion protection system.
Refer to figure, briefly describe the main functions of components numbered 1, 2,3 and 4.

1-This is a heat exchanger through which cooling sea water

circulates in order for the salt water vapor to condense and turn into
fresh water.
2-This is a heat exchanger through which jacket water from main
engine circulates in order to heat salt water and at low pressure it
boils to generate vapes.
3-A demister is necessary to filter salt water droplets, since after the
salt water evaporates, not all drops will turn into pure dry vapes.
4- This is an orifice that will doze the required amount of sea water
to turn it into steam.
State the two most important parameters of the production of freshwater by evaporation on board ship.

1-Basic principle of all low-pressure freshwater generator is that

boiling point of water which is done by creating a vacuum (-0.4bar)
inside the chamber where the evaporation is taking place.
2-By maintaining a low pressure, water can be boiled at low
temperatures say 45°C.
The source of heat for the freshwater generator could be waste
heat rejected by main engine jacket cooling water.
Describe, with aid of sketch, the shipboard steering gear system.
Briefly describe the main functions of the components such as Telemotor, Control Unit and Hunting gear.

• Telemotor device by which the movement of the wheel on a

ship's bridge operates the steering gear at the stern.
• Control Unit it is a link between Telemotor and Power Unit
• Hunting gear mechanism in the steering gear system is a
feedback mechanism, which transmits the position of the rudder
to the pump control unit, through the floating lever.
