Worksheet on Acceleration
Name: Date:
SOI- Understanding the relationships between movement of objects with respect to space and time has
improved human’s way of living.
LEARNING GOAL – To solve the questions based on distance, displacement, speed, velocity and acceleration.
Equations:
Acceleration = Final velocity – Initial velocity Time = Final Velocity – Initial Velocity
Time Acceleration
Problems: In order to receive credit for this worksheet you MUST show your work. You can use a
calculator but you must show all of the steps in the spaces provided.
1. A roller coaster car rapidly picks up speed as it rolls down a slope. As it starts down the slope, its
speed is 4 m/s. But 3 seconds later, at the bottom of the slope, its speed is 22 m/s. Calculate its
average acceleration?
= 6 ms2
2. A cyclist accelerates from 0 m/s to 8 m/s in 3 seconds. Calculate his acceleration ? Is this
acceleration higher than that of a car which accelerates from 0 to 30 m/s in 8 seconds?
3. A car advertisement states that a certain car can accelerate from rest to 70 km/h in 7 seconds. Find the
car’s average acceleration.
= 70 km/h ms = 19.44
a = 19.44/7 = 2.77 ms2
4. A lizard accelerates from 2 m/s to 10 m/s in 4 seconds. Calculate the lizard’s average acceleration?
a = 8/4
a = 2ms2
50 = v – 10/3
150 = v – 10
V = 160 m/s
6. A car start from rest and acquire a velocity of 54 km/h in 2 sec. Find
(i) the acceleration
54 km/h ms
15 m/s
a = 7.5 m/s2
(ii) distance travelled by car assume motion of car is uniform?
s = ut + ½ at2
s = ½ * 7.5 * 22
s = 15 m
7. The maximum speed of a train is 90 km/h. It takes 10 hours to cover a distance of 500 km. Find the ratio
of its average speed to maximum speed?
Average speed = total distance/total time 500/10 = 50 kmph
Average speed/maximum speed = 50/90
= 5:9
8. An object dropped from a cliff falls with a constant acceleration of 10 m/s 2. Calculate its speed 5 s after it
was dropped.
U=0 t = 5 a = 10
V = u + at v = 50m/s
9. A ball is thrown upwards and it goes to the height 100 m and comes down
1) Find the net displacement?
=0
2) Find the net distance?
= 100 + 100 = 200m
11. A bullet hits a Sand box with a velocity of 20 m/s and penetrates it up to a distance of 6 cm. Find the
deceleration of the bullet in the sand box.
d = 0.06m u = 20 v=0
deceleration = v – u/t
v2 = u2 + 2as
0 = 40 + 2 * a * 0.06
0 = 40 + 0.12a
-40 = 0.12a
a = -333.3
decelaration = 0 – 20/0.06
= -333.33 m/s2
F = ma f = 1000* -15
f = - 15000 N
