Assignment I
Engineering Hydrology (Code: 20CE105)

1. Find out the average precipitations for catchments A,B,C and D. Point rainfall values
are given in cm.

2. Test the consistency of the following data:

In which year the change in regime was observed?

Adjust the data for A station and compute the mean annual precipitation.
3. A catchment area has seven raingauge stations. In a year the annual rainfall recorded
by the gauges are as follows: Rainfall (cm) : 130.0, 142.1, 118.2, 108.5, 165.2, 102.1,
146.9
For a 5% error in the estimation of the mean rainfall, calculate the minimum number of
additional stations required to be established in the catchment.
4. The normal annual precipitation of five raingauge stations P, Q, R, S and T are respec-
tively 125, 102, 76, 113 and 137 cm. During a particular storm the precipitation re-
corded by stations P, Q, R, and S are 13.2, 9.2, 6.8 and 10.2 cm respectively. The
instru- ment at station T was inoperative during that storm. Estimate the rainfall at
station T during that storm.
5. Calculate PET from a place neer New Delhi for the Nth day of January. Where N is roll
number (last two digits). If N>30, N=integer(N/2).
Latitude 28.5◦ N; Altitude: 2100m above sea level; Mean Monthly temperature: 11◦ ;
Mean relative humidity: 65%; Wind velocity at 2m=80km/day; nature of crop: Closed-
ground green crop. (use necessary tables)
6. For the given dataset, establish: (a) Kostiakov’s, (b) Phillips, and (c) Green ampts (d)
horton models.

7. Optional: Write python codes to solve the above problems.

8. For a drainage basin of 600 km2 , isohyetals drawn for a storm gave the following data:

Estimate the average depth of precipitation over the catchment.

9. The infiltration capacity of a catchment is represented by Horton’s equation as

fp = 0.5 + 1.2e−0.5t

where fp is in cm/h and t is in hours. Assuming the infiltration to take place at capacity
rates in a storm of 4 hours duration, estimate the average rate of infiltration for the
duration of the storm.
10. The mass curve of an isolated storm in a 500 ha watershed is as follows:

9If the direct runoff produced by the storm is measured at the outlet of the watershed
as 0.340 Mm3 , estimate the ϕ-index of the storm and duration of rainfall excess.
