Before/After social media
Interconnectivity, connection, and user-generated content are all characteristics of social media.
The usage of social media has now become a crucial everyday part of life in today's culture.
Social media is commonly used for human engagement, news and information access, and
judgment call. It is a useful tool for communicating with individuals locally and globally, as well
as for sharing, creating, and disseminating information. Social networking sites are maybe the
most prominent social media tool. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Blogger, LinkedIn, and Google +
are all well-known names among the general public, whether they utilize social media or not.
Almost everyone in the United States has a Facebook account, ranging in age from 13 to 64.
These social networking services may be used to bring individuals from all over the world
together (A., 2019, October 22).
Life seemed so much more peaceful and productive before social media. Almost
everyone has a phone on them or nearby on their desk when they are at work these days (123
Help Me. (n.d.). Although social media activism raises awareness of societal concerns, the
question of whether this awareness leads to genuine change remains unanswered. Some claim
that social media has encouraged individuals to utilize mobile devices such as smartphones to
voice their worries about social issues without having to participate in real-life campaigns. With
the development of social media, it's becoming rarer to find a company that doesn't use one or
more social media platforms to reach out to consumers and prospects. Businesses recognize the
value of utilizing social media to engage with consumers and generate income. Businesses have
understood that social media can be used to provide insights, boost demand, and develop
customized product offers. Obviously, these factors are essential in traditional brick-and-mortar
businesses.
Teenagers want to fit in, be popular, and outperform their peers. This was a difficult
procedure even before the emergence of social media. When you add social media platforms
such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram to the mix, teens are now under pressure to
grow up too quickly in an online environment. According to the Cyberbullying Institute's 2019
poll of US school-going students especially middle and high school students, more than 36% say
they've been cyberbullied at least once in their lives, with 30% saying they've been
victimized twice or more. It was also shown that over 15% acknowledged cyberbullying
someone at a minimum once, with nearly 11% confessing to doing so twice or more (S., 2022,
March 2).
The world before and after social media seems to be day and night apart from having
limited forms of connectivity prior to now having hundreds of applications to keep everyone up
to date regardless of boundaries placed through geographical differences, we see the relevance
and even reliance of social media in our life. Prior media outlets focused mainly on national
news whereas social media went beyond these boundaries making the world a global village.
However, with greater connectivity and two-way communication come issues like cyberbullying,
media discourse, offensive opinions being broadcasted, and discrimination.
