    Module: Basic Concepts of Disaster and Disaster Risk

    Introduction

    Disaster and Disaster Risk are two terms that must be distinguished from each other.
    After the event, a disaster may occur and the losses like total number of deaths,
    injuries, damaged structures, displaced people and damaged properties can be
    determined.

    Disaster risk is “considered to be a function of hazard, exposure and vulnerability. It is


    normally expressed as a probability of loss of life, injury or destroyed or damaged
    assets which could occur to a system, society or a community in a specific period of
    time” (UNISDR 2015). Hence, the losses in disaster risk are predictions only if the
    hazard occurs. The predicted losses are a result of an assessment of the hazard and
    vulnerability. Hence, in a disaster, the losses are after the event, while in disaster risk,
    the losses are estimates only if the event occurs or before the event

    After studying this module, you should be able to:

    1. Basic Concepts of Disaster and Disaster Risk

    1. To explain the meaning of “disaster” and “hazard” and their relationship.


    2. Identify various types of hazards and disasters experienced in daily life.
    3. To explain the meaning of “vulnerability”, “disaster risk” and “disaster risk
    reduction” and their relationship to disasters and hazards
    4. To “think safety” and identify various types of disaster risk reduction measures
    encountered in daily life.

    Learning Activity

    1. As an introduction to the lesson, students will be given a pop-up quiz using


    Kahoot! as a review of the pre-requisite course and about disasters.

    2. The students will be oriented to the course (course description, objectives,


    DR&RR Framework) using pear deck slides.
    3. As an activity, students will create an e-poster that promotes safety and disaster
    awareness.

    4. Students will watch videos about Luzon Earthquake and CDO (Cagayan de Oro)
    flood.

    5. They were then asked about classification of disasters and how they can
    describe a disaster based on its occurrence and effects to different sectors of the
    community.

    6. Discussions on concepts about disasters and hazards will then commence using
    Canva highlighting some examples of prominent disasters that happened in the
    Philippines.

    7. Using peardeck, students will then identify the hazards and possible disasters
    given the pictures to be provided.

    8. Discussions on concepts about disaster risk and vulnerability will then


    commence using Canva presentation.

    9. As evaluation, students will then be asked to create a short essay about hazards
    at home, including pictures and illustration of the hazards found in their homes.
