Gold can be mixed with other metals such as silver, platinum, palladium, copper or nickel. Gold that has
silver, palladium or platinum is often called ‘white gold’. Copper is often added to gold to make it more
durable, this is called ‘rose gold’.
The term karat refers to the purity of the gold; the better way to refer to gold is by its weight and its
purity. The word carat, which is often interchangeable with karat, is actually the weight of a gemstone.

To be a successful designer you need to be able to create unusual designs. The collection needs to have a lot
of variety as customers look for unique pieces to wear. Customers will expect a high level of skill even in
hand-crafted pieces, so it is important to have all of the key basic skills. Customers will pay more for pieces
if they believe that the product is of high quality. Learning the basic principles of jewellery design is very
important. You will have to consider colour, texture and balance. You will also need to know how to handle
a wide variety of different materials and understand how they work together. Customers also like the idea
of being able to have customized or personalized pieces that can make regular pieces unique to them.
