QUESTION 1

CASE STUDY : GARIBALDI STREET, LION

This case study tells of a project that will be implemented in the Greator Lyon area located in
the south -east of France. The name of the project is the Garibaldi Road Renovation Project.
The head of the Greator Lyon Autority (GLA) Tree and Landscape Unit Frédéric Ségur
explained his strategy for tree development and their alternative transportation going hand in
hand. In addition the second frees up space for the first. The first creates the interesting
environment needed for the second. Frédéric Ségur states there is no other way for them to
succeed other than projects.

Greater Lyon is a metropolitan area with a population of 1.4 million people that includes
Lyon and its suburbs. Garibaldi Road was once a six -lane highway that passed through Lyon
city center. It is located between the historic district and the Part-Dieu area, the second largest
central business district (CBD) in France. Garibaldi Road was renovated in the 1960s and
features many features from this era, including an underpass that allows cars to bypass
intersections combined with pedestrian bridges, providing a way to cross such infrastructure
safely. Part-Dieu is home to large shopping malls and interchange train stations, with high-
speed train connections to several French and European destinations. It also serves as a multi
-mode hub used by 500,000 daily passengers. The area has been affected by severe air
pollution, as well as overheating during the summer - a phenomenon that is expected to
worsen. By 2080, Lyon is predicted to have a climate similar to Algiers, in North Africa. Few
of the existing building stock currently has air conditioning.

The Garibaldi Road renovation project provides a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the
attractiveness of the Part-Dieu CBD. Therefore, this can change the quality of public space in
and around the area because it can be used as an attraction for the current generation, which
in turn can provide more jobs in the area. Garibaldi Road should be an attractive, comfortable
and pedestrian -friendly entrance. Reconfiguration of space allocation between highway
users, large-scale integration of plants and re-engineering of drainage systems are the three
main reasons for mutual support to achieve these ambitions. From the perspective of highway
management and mobility, the Garibaldi Road renovation project provides an interesting
example of a “road diet” and the implementation of the “complete street” principle. All
movement functions are brought back to ground level and the space previously allocated to
private vehicles is more than half. This frees up vast areas for sustainable transportation and
cultivation, offering a contemporary garden path design pioneered over 150 years ago by
Frederick Law Olmsted.

Right plant, right place

Cultivation is spread between four lush, continuous, parallel ribbons. Ribbons provide a
structuring element that makes it easy for pedestrians, cyclists, buses and vehicles to say
goodbye together. . An important objective for this landscaped strip is to significantly cool
summer temperatures, support wildlife, be resilient to impending climate change and require
little or no maintenance. Plant migration and self -sowing are important parts of ongoing
design and management. The inspiration for this was taken from the Garden in Motion
principle pioneered by French Landscape Architect Gilles Clement.
The two planting strips located on either side of the three car lanes maintained in the middle
of the road are very dry as they are too exposed to the sun and less rain falls in the area.
Therefore, as a response that needs to be done, the design prioritizes two levels of plants,
namely the herb layer and the tree layer.
The herbaceous layer has three different mixtures of sedge and perennial dominated by
garrigue species (i.e. plants native to Mediterranean shrubs that grow on well -drained
calcareous soils). The tree layer incorporates multiple small (e.g. Prunus sunset boulevard
spp., Fraxinus ornus spp., Ostrya carpinifolia spp ...), Medium (e.g. Acer campestre spp.,
Prunus avium, Liquidambar styraciflua spp.) And tall -growing species (e.g. Quercus ilex.
spp.., Quercus cerris pps., Zelkova serrata spp., Ulmus lutece spp.…), all in the form of a
single stem.
To achieve this, three layers of cultivation were combined, mimicking the mixture of species
found in oak-hornbeam forests. These include tall -growing tree species, in the form of single
trunks, as well as preserved plane trees (Platanus hispanica spp., Garibaldi featured 80 mature
plane trees before renovation that provided 6000 square meters of shade, all of which were
kept in a single bar, which had been diseased).

Below ground design

The Garibaldi Street renovation project is further supported by a detailed approach to
basement design. One of the underground passages that was closed as part of the renovation
has been converted into a stormwater storage tank that collects runoff from bus routes as well
as overflow from vegetation strips. When exposed to severe drought and heat waves, plants
protect themselves from wilting by covering their stomata.
With its extensive use of trees and its attention to providing plants with a large number of non
-dense rooting volumes and good access to water, the Garibaldi Street renovation has already
been designed to maximize shading and evaporation. Data collection protocols are also
designed to support learning about the effects of timely watering processes and calibrating
associated automated irrigation systems - as no data is available in the literature to tell how
much water will be “enough” or how much cooling will occur. The GLA is currently using
this data to develop a forecast model to replicate this approach on future projects

Demonstrable results
The results are indeed very conclusive. The increased presence of trees and other vegetation
along the refurbished section of Garibaldi Street has been proven to lower ambient
temperatures in August 2016 and August 2017 by 1.78C and 2.33C on average, and thermal
comfort by 9C (Global Thermal Climate Index). Further measures carried out in 2019 were
able to isolate the effects of irrigation on the cooling effects generated by plants, suggesting
that this was responsible for between 0.5C to 1C in the observed temperature reduction.
Reusing underground passages as stormwater collection tanks is proving expensive and
awkward to manage in the long run. As a result, for future projects, it is anticipated that
smaller, specially constructed tanks that can be assimilated into “irrigation systems” will be
preferred (although they also contribute to sustainable drainage), to allow for more cost -
effective and less setup and operation. time consuming.
QUESTION 2

As we know the earth today is no longer as it used to be because more and more pollution has
occurred such as air pollution, rivers and many others. This is a result of the actions of our
society that are not responsible for the environment. The earth is also warming due to the
depletion of the ozone layer as a result of open burning and increasing factory fumes. This
matter must be taken seriously by all parties to maintain the stability of the earth's
environment for future generations. I have a dream to have a green city that benefits
everyone.

For my first dream, I want to use solar energy as the main source of electrical energy for
roadside lights and traffic lights because this is renewable energy. This solar energy can also
be used for every home. This electrical energy can also be used for charging hybrid cars such
as tesla car models. This is to avoid the use of gasoline that is almost depleted.

Besides that my dream is to create a green park located in the middle of the city. In the
garden will be planted a variety of beautiful plants that can attract butterflies and birds. I will
also plant plants by the side of the road so that I can add more refreshing oxygen air. With
that too I was able to create a well -ventilated city.

In addition, my third dream is that I want to create a green transport that uses electricity to
move. For example, buses that use electricity and among the green cars that can be used by
the community are such as honda hybrid and others. With the use of this vehicle we can avoid
bad car smoke emissions in the air. Furthermore, this can also improve everyone's health and
provide maximum comfort.

My fourth dream is that I want to create a green building. For example, a house that has a
good drainage system and has a rainwater catchment because it can be reused for the
bathroom. In addition, house design and sustainability of materials used in construction.
Various plants will be planted in the area of the house to provide comfort to everyone with
good natural air. Because the green building concept is ultimately about building better places
to live, with an environmentally friendly development that recognizes both the practical and
personal benefits of sustainable building. Many benefits can be obtained from green building
such as positive living environment, greenspace and landscaping as well as low energy use.
QUESTION 3

1.Measure the consumption of an electrical appliance in your household.

1) Ceiling fan : 1 unit x 60w x 12 hours = 720 Wh ( 0.720 kWh )

2) Phone Charger : 3 unit x 12w x 2hours = 72 Wh ( 0.072 kWh )

3) Rice cooker : 1 unit x 400w x 1 hours = 400 Wh ( 0.4 kWh )

4) Washing machine : 1 unit x 450w x 2 hours = 900 Wh ( 0.9 kWh )

5) Refrigerator : 2 units x 600w x 24 hours = 28 800 Wh ( 28.8 kWh )

6) Laptop charger : 1 units x 50w x 2 hours = 100 Wh ( 0.1 kWh )

7) Lamp : 10 unit x 60w x 12 hours = 7200 Wh ( 7.2 kWh )

8) Television : 1 units x 400w x 8 hours = 3200 Wh ( 3.2 kWh )

9) Aircond : 1 unit x 1000w x 5 hours = 5000 Wh ( 5 kWh )

10) Printer : 1 unit x 45w x 1 hours = 45 Wh ( 0.045 kWh )

Total electricity Consumtion in a day :

0.720 + 0.072 + 0.4 + 0.9 + 28.8 + 0.1 + 7.2 + 3.2 + 5 + 0.045

= 46.437 kWh

Total electricity Consumtion in month :

46.437 x 30 days = 1393.11 kWh

200 kWh first x RM 0.216 = RM 43.60
Next 100 kWh x RM 0.334 = RM33.40
Next 300 kWh x RM 0.518 = RM 155.8
Next 300 kWh x RM 0.546 = RM 163.8
Next 493.11 kWh x RM 0.571 = RM 281.56
( 200 + 100 + 300 + 300 + 493.11 = 1393.11 kWh )

Total electricity charges for month :

43.60 + 33.40 + 155.8 + 163.8 + 281.56 = RM 678.16
