Module: Management Science 1

Assignment: 2

1 Students were asked to keep a record of the number of hours they spent studying the MS001
module during the year. At the end of the module they sat the exam and the marks were
recorded alongside their hours of study. All the details are in the following table.

Number of hours spent studying (x) Exam result (y)

58 65
76 82
67 68
80 80
59 64
78 75
62 74
73 77
64 70
66 62
73 68
69 79

(a) Draw a scatter diagram for the data

(b) Comment on the diagram
(c) Calculate the correlation coefficient and explain what it means in terms of time
studying and exam result.
(d) How much of the variability is accounted for by the relationship between the two
variables and what does this statistic mean?
(e) Find the equation of the regression line.
(f) What would you expect the satisfaction level to be based on the number of hours
studying of 50? 60? 70? And 80? Comment on the results.

2 10% of light bulbs have lives exceeding 2340 hours and 5% have lives less than 2170 hours.
The lifetime of bulbs follow a normal distribution.

(a) Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the distribution.

(b) What percentage of bulbs have lifetimes greater than 2300 hours?
(c) Calculate the probability that in a random sample of 4 bulbs exactly two will have a
lifetime exceeding 2300 hours.
(d) What range, equally spaced about the mean, contains 90% of the distribution?

3(a) If a pair of dice is thrown 10 times what is the probability of getting a total of 9:

(i) Exactly twice?

(ii) At least twice?

(b) The average number of accidents per 8 hour shift in a manufacturing plant is 3.4. The accidents
are unrelated to each other and occur randomly. What is the probability that:

(i) N accident occurs during a particular work shift?

(ii) Five or more accidents occur during a particular work shift?
(iii) One accident occurs during a particular hour?

4(a) You wish to determine if the air pollution in your area is within the recommended safety level of
200 particles per square meter. You collect 10 samples of air and analyse them for pollution
giving the following results:

180 196 193 210 207 184 198 215 190 175

Does the data indicate that the air pollution is within the safety level of 200 particles per square
meter? Use 1% level of significance. What assumption must you make?

(b) It has been assumed that girls score more points in excess of 600 points in the Leaving
Certificate. Test this claim at the 5% level of significance for the following set of randomly
collected data that have a Variance of 10,000.

700 510 600 800 490 650 780 640 680 710 620 590 530 690 800 480 670 510 730 650

5(a) A company want to market a new healthy flavour of ice cream. They ask a sample of 100 adults
for their preference. The numbers voting for each of the 4 flavours are given in the following
table:

Peanut Butter Carrot Smoked Fish Celery and Blue Cheese

16 41 24 19

Do the data suggest that all the flavours will be equally popular, at the 5% level?

(a) A random sample of 24 MS001 students, from all the students studying for the MS001 exam,
were asked how many hours they spent preparing their first assignment. The results, in hours,
were:

20, 8.5, 5, 19, 10.5, 7.5, 18, 11, 3.5, 9, 7, 4.5, 8, 14, 9, 2.5, 15, 9, 20, 7.5, 8, 9, 14.5 and 22

Calculate a 95% confidence interval for the data and interpret your solution.

6(a) A manufacturer of coloured ink cartridges claims that they will print with a mean 400 pages and
a standard deviation of 20 pages. A random sample of 100 cartridges were selected and the
mean number of pages was found to be 390. Should the manufacturers claim be accepted or
rejected at the 1% level?

(b) You select a random sample of monthly salaries from IT professionals. The sample size is 7
and you can assume that the population is normally distributed. Test the claim, at the 5% level,
that the average monthly salaries of IT professionals is greater than €9000. The sample mean
is = €9915.60 and the Standard Deviation is = €693.40.
