Area and perimeter of Quadrilaterals and
Triangles

Name: Class: Subject: Date:

Note: Remember to solve these problems systematically. Write down

what's already given, the problems, your counting process (solution), and
the conclusion.

Find the perimeter of the triangle whose sides are:

(i) 3 m, 4 m and 5 m

(ii) 11 m, 17 m and 19 m

(iii) 20 cm, 20 cm and 15 cm

(iv) 6 cm, 8 cm and 10 cm

(v) 34 cm, 18 cm and 27 cm

(vi) 10 cm, 15 cm and 12 cm

Perimeter = total sum of all sides

1. Each triangular face of the Pyramid of Peace in Kazakhstan is
made up of 25 smaller equilateral triangles. These triangles have
measurements as shown in the diagram. What is the area of one of
the smaller equilateral triangles?

Given: base = 12 m, height = 10.4 cm

Problems: The area of smaller triangle?
ℎ 12 10.4
Solution: Area of the triangle = = = 62.4 2
2 2

So, The area of one of the smaller equilateral triangles is

62.4 .

2. Amy needs to order a shade for a triangular-shaped window that

has a base of 6 feet and a height of 4 feet. What is the area of the
shade ?

Given: base = 6 feet, height = 4 feet

Problems: The area of the shade?

ℎ 64
Solution: Area of the shade = = = 12 square feet
2 2

So the area of the shade is 12 square feet.

3. Monica has a triangular piece of fabric. The height of the triangle
is 15 inches and the triangle’s base is 6 inches. Monica says that the
area of the fabric is 90 square inches. What error did Monica make?
Explain your answer.

Given: height = 15 inches, base = 6 inches, Area (Monica’s

calculation) = 90 square inches

Problems: Check whether Monica’s calculation is correct or not.

Solution: Checking Monica’s calculation.

ℎ 6 15
Area of the fabric = = = 45 square inches.
2 2

So here we find that Monica’s calculation was incorrect,

because she used wrong formula to calculate triangular
piece of fabric. She must divide her calculation by 2.

4. The sixth-grade art students are making a mosaic using tiles in

the shape of right triangle. The two sides that meet to form a
right angle are 3 centimeters and 5 centimeters long. If there are
200 tiles in the mosaic, what is the area of the mosaic ?
C

A B

Given: AC = 3 cm, AB = 5 cm

Problems: Area of the mosaic?

ℎ 53
Solution: 1 mosaic = = = 7.5 2 .
2 2

200 mosaics = 7.5 x 200 = 1500 2.

So, the area of the mosaic is 1500 2 .

5. Wayne is going to paint the side of the house shown in the
diagram. What is the area that will be painted? Explain how you
found your answer.

Given:

Rectangle > length = 25 ft, width = 12 ft

Triangle > base = 25 ft, height = 8 ft

Problems: The area that will be painted ( area of triangle + area of

rectangle)?

Solution:

ℎ 25 8
Area of triangle = = = 100 square feet
2 2

Area of rectangle = l x w = 25 x 12 = 300 square feet

Area that will be painted = area of triangle + area of rectangle =

100 + 300 = 400 square feet.

So, the area that will be painted is 400 square feet.
