John 02 01 11 Reading
1. The setting: A wedding in Cana of Galilee 1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.
a. It was three days later Jesus’ mother was there,
b. Mary attended
c. Jesus and the disciples attended 2 And Jesus and his disciples had also been invited
to the wedding.
2. The concern of Jesus’ creative power 3 When the wine was gone,
a. Mary’s social concern Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
b. Jesus’ deeper concern: 4 “Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied.
To meet man’s spiritual need “My time has not yet come.”
through His hour, His death
c. Mary’s confidence in her Son 5 His mother said to the servants,
“Do whatever he tells you.”
3. The revelation of Jesus’ creative power 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars,
a. The materials: Water jars — used for the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,
cleaning and for carrying drinking water each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
b. The command: Prepare 7 Jesus said to the servants “Fill the jars with water”;
c. The obedience: so they filled them to the brim.
They drew water
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out
and experienced
and take it to the master of the banquet.”
the creative power of Jesus
They did so,
4. The results of Jesus’ creative power 9 And the master of the banquet tasted the water
a. Man’s need was met that had been turned into wine.
He did not realize where it had come from,
1) Man’s understanding was limited
though the servants who had drawn the water knew.
Then he called the bridegroom aside
2) Man’s appreciation was expressed 10 And said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first
and then the cheaper wine
after the guests have had too much to drink;
but you have saved the best till now.”
b. Christ’s glory was revealed 11 This, the first of his miraculous signs,
Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee.
He thus revealed his glory,
c. The disciples’ faith was strengthened and his disciples put their faith in him.
