OVERVIEW
Environment is the sum total of conditions and influences that
make up the surroundings of a living organism. The existence of
a man made profound changes to the environment in order to
improve their life and make the world better. However, some of
these doing led to some environmental issues. That is why,
Environmental protection is needed.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION?
Environmental protection is the practice of

governments, organizations, and private citizens
preserving the environment. Its goals are to
preserve natural resources and the current natural
environment, as well as to repair damage and
reversal trends when practical.
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT
The greenhouse effect is a phenomenon in

which heat from a planet's host star passes
through its atmosphere and warms the surface
of the planet, but greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere prevent some of the heat from
returning directly to space, making the planet
warmer.
GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is the long-term heating of

Earth's surface observed since the pre-
industrial period (between 1850 and 1900) due
to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning,
which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas
levels in Earth's atmosphere.
CLIMATE CHANGE
It refers to long-term shifts in temperatures

and weather patterns. These shifts may be
natural, but since the 1800s, human activities
have been the main driver of climate change,
primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like
coal, oil and gas), which produces heat-
trapping gases.
WHY IS CLIMATE CHANGE A CONCERN?
Climate change has caused increased heat, drought, and insect

outbreaks. In turn, these changes have made wildfires more
numerous and severe. The warming climate has also caused a
decline in water supplies, reduced agricultural yields, and triggered
heat-related health impacts in cities.

Most studies and reports today do confirm
that the scientific case of anthropogenic
climate change is proven. Scientists have
shown that the climate change related to
global warming is caused by the increased
rates of release of greenhouse gases into
the atmosphere by human activities and
energy consumption.

GREENHOUSE GAS SINK

a reduction in atmospheric GHGs by storing (sequestering)
carbon in another form. A traditional carbon sink is
underground coal and oil deposits where millions of year ago
living plants (and other organisms) used atmospheric carbon
to build the plant.
REFORESTATION
the natural or intentional restocking of existing forests and
woodlands that have been depleted, usually through
deforestation, but also after clearcutting.
PHILIPPINES' RESPONSE ON
CLIMATE CHANGE
One of the first countries to sign the United Nations Framework

Convention on Climate Change of 1992.
One of the earliest countries to recognize the importance of systematic

institutional response to the problem of the climate change.
PHILIPPINES' LAWS AND PROJECTS
The Republic Act No. 9729 establishes a framework strategy and program
for incorporating climate change considerations into projects. PPP project
developments are required to comply with national and/or local climate
change action plans.
