Salt analysis – 2

Aim: Analysis to find the anion and cation in the given salt by systematic procedure and identify the salt.

Experiment Observation Inference

1. To little of the given salt No characteristic reaction Absence of CO32- , S2-, SO32-, NO2-
(solid – dry salt) add dil. H2SO4 etc.
(In a test tube)

2. Rub a little of solid salt in a No characteristic reaction Absence of CH3COO- ion

watch glass with a little of dilute
sulfuric acid.

3. To little of the given solid salt A colorless pungent smelling gas Cl- may present in the given
add conc. H2SO4 and warm the which produces a dense white salt.
mixture/heat gently fume with a glass rod dipped in
ammonia solution
Cl- + H2SO4 →HSO4-+HCl(g)

HCl + NH3 → NH4Cl

Confirmatory test for chloride

ions
1. To a little of salt solution add A white ppt formed which Cl- ion is confirmed
dilute nitric acid and silver dissolves in excess of
nitrate solution ammonium hydroxide solution.
Cl- + AgNO3 → AgCl (s)+ NO3-

AgCl(s) + NH4OH → [Ag(NH3)2]Cl

(aq) + 2H2O ( The complex
formed is soluble in water.

2. To a little of salt solution add White ppt which dissolves in Cl- ion is confirmed
dilute nitric acid and lead boiled water
nitrate solution. Cl- + Pb(NO3)2 → PbCl2 (s)+ NO3-

Result (Anion)

Anion in the given salt is chloride ion (Cl-)

Test for cation

Experiment Observation Inference

Preliminary tests for cations
Color of the salt is noted White solid Absence of Cu+, Fe2+,Fe3+, Ni 2+,
Co2+, Mn2+

Odour of the salt is noted No characteristic smell NH4+ may be absent

Flame Test: Make a paste of the
mixture with conc. HCl in a Brick red flame color is Ca2+ ions may present
watch glass and introduce into a observed
non-luminous flame
Group Analysis

Group 0 - To the little of the salt

solution add sodium carbonate A ppt formed Group 0 is absent (NH4+)
solution

Group I – To little of the salt No white ppt is formed Group I cation is absent (Pb2+)
soln. add dil. HCl

Group 2 – To little of the salt No ppt observed Group II cation is absent (Cu2+
soln. add dil HCl and H2S gas and As3+)

Group – To little of the salt No ppt observed Group III cation is absent (Al3+)
soln. add solid NH4Cl and
excess ammonium hydroxide
solution

Group 2 – To little of the salt No ppt observed Group IV cation is absent (Zn2+,
soln. add solid NH4Cl and Fe3+)
excess NH4OH solution and
pass H2S gas into it

Group 2 – To little of the salt A white ppt is observed Group IV cations may be
soln. add solid NH4Cl and present (Ca2+ , Ba2+, Sr2+)
excess NH4OH and ammonium
carbonate solution

Confirmatory tests for Group V

cations – Follow BSC rule

To little of the salt add No characteristic ppt Ba2+ absent

potassium chromate solution
To little of the salt solution add No characteristic ppt Sr2+ absent
ammonium sulphate solution

To little of the salt solution add White ppt formed Ca2+ confirmed
ammonium oxalate solution

Result (Cation): The cation in the given salt is Ca2+

Final Result

The given salt is Calcium chloride (CaCl2)
