Read the following description of situations and interpret the ethical issues by answering the
two questions for each situation. Your judgement will depend on your ethical position as an
individual and as an organisation.

Situation 1:

1. Divya worked as an office assistant in a company. She was the only earning member
of her family and lived with her parents and siblings. Her father was not earning much
and the responsibility of the education of her younger siblings was on Divya. The
company had a policy that one cannot use office stationery and telephone for personal
use. Under immense stress to make ends meet, Divya used to take stationery from the
office for her school going brother and sister. She also used the office printer to take
prints of personal documents. She was otherwise a sincere and efficient worker.

What is your opinion on the following?

Divya felt, for a company making good profit, small items like pen, pencil and paper
did not mean much, hence she was not wrong in carrying them home. She also felt that
as she was working really hard and the company was not paying her enough, she was
right in using official phone for personal use.

Q1. What type of ethical issue is it - Systemic, Corporate, Individual?

It is Individual type of ethical issue since Divya actions or behaviours or decisions that
she has made affects the company policy and her doing this will also encourage others to do
the same which in turn will break the company’s policy.

Q2. Who are affected by the actions? How are they affected?

Divya because questions would be raised on her morality by the company and that would affect
company’s perception about her in the future even if she has good reasons to support her action
like in her case it is supporting the family even if it means using company stationery for her
family needs (here maybe required by her younger siblings). Maybe at her end she is right in
using Company’s stationery and supporting that is her sincerity at workplace and since
company made good profits, she also worked hard but wasn’t paid enough. These reasons
prompted her to make this decision. The decisions made by her were mainly dependent on the
circumstances around her and decisions taken by her were morally correct to her.

Company because Divya decisions showed there was no obedience of policy made by company
which eventually shows there would be similar acts in the future. Divya using company
stationery and using printer is morally correct since she has strong reason to it. But there will
be a case where the person who would misuse company stationery and printer. All in All, this
would affect the company policy and they will have to take strict action or make some changes
to the policy.

Q3.

Person Affected Negative Positive

Divya She could be removed from Because of her actions, she is
her position or they could be able to help her cousins by
a specified time for which taking stationery of company
she would not be eligible for
promotion
Company They have to make changes
in the policy due to Divya’s
Act and Importance of
Company won’t be there.

Situation 2:

records of all transactions for any customer. He sometimes looks up the records of
famous people. He checks to see where they use their credit cards and how much
money they spend. He sometimes shares with his friends the buying habits of
entertainers and politicians. Which ethical issue in the use of technology is being
compromised here? What will be the effect of this on the company?

credit card. This would also change people’s decision who would be having a thought or
