Introductory Message
Welcome to TVL 11 – ICT (Computer System Servicing)!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of San Carlos City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed
to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TVL 11 – ICT (Computer System Servicing) Activity Sheet will help you
facilitate the teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the
independent learning.

For the learner:

The TVL 11 – ICT (Computer System Servicing) Activity Sheet is developed

to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material
provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being
an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule

II. Background Information for Learners

Computer Network Concepts

A computer network is a collection of computers and devices (printer, scanner)

connected together via communication devices (NIC-Router, Hub) and transmission media
(physical-Infrared, Radiowave, Satellite). For examples it may connect computers, printers and
scanners. Communication describes a process in which two or more computer or devices
transfer data, instructions and information.
Importance/ Advantage of Computer Network
-Sharing of device such as printer and scanner -Sharing of information
-Sharing of program/ software -Sharing of single high-speed internet connection
-Sharing of files -Can access server centered database
-Sharing of data
-Better communication using internet services such as email, mailing list and Internet Relat
Chat (IRC)
Types of Computer Networks
1. Local Area Network (LAN) - a network that connects
computers and device in a limited geographical area
such as a home, school computer laboratory, office
building.

2. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) – is a high speed

network that connects that connects local area networks in
a metropolitan area such as city or town and handles
bulks of communication activity across the region. A MAN
typically includes one or more LAN but covers a small
geographic area than a WAN.

4
3. Wide Area Network (WAN) – is a network that covers a large
geographical area such country or the world. WAN combines
many types of media such as telephone lines, cables and radio
wave. A WAN can be one large network or can consist of two or
more LANs connected together. The internet is the worlds
largest WAN.

Network Architecture is the overall design of a computer network that describes how a
computer network is configured and what strategies are being used. It is mainly focuses on the
function of the networks. It is also known as network model or network design.
Two main network architecture:

Client/ Server
Network

Peer to peer
Network

5
Client/Server On a client/server network, one computer act as a server that
provides services and the other computers (client) on the network
request services from the server.
A server is a computer that controls access to the hardware,
software and other resources on the network and provides a
centralized storage area for program.
A client is a computer that request services from a server
computer.
Peer-to-peer Peer-to-peer is a simple, inexpensive network that typically
connects fewer than 10 computers. All computers in the network
have equal capabilities to use the resources (hardware, software,
data and file) available on the network. With peer-to-peer
networks, there is no central server.

The Differences between Client/Server and Peer-to-Peer

Client/Server Peer-to-Peer
1. Server has to control ability while 1. All computers have equal ability.
client’s don’t 2. Cheaper cabling cost
2. Higher cabling cost 3. Normally used in small networks with
3. It is used in small and large networks less than 10 computers
4. Easy to manage 4. Hard to manage
5. Install software only in the server while 5. Install software to every computer
the clients share the software 6. No server is needed
6. One powerful computer acting as a
server

V. Reflection

1. What are the different ways of securing a computer network?

2. When it comes to networking, what are “rights”?

3. In Kabankalan city, there are four Jollibee fastfood chains, all owned by the
same person. What type of network should they install so that all branch-
managers can gain the same access of data from all branches? As an NCII
holder of CSS, you are tasked to install this type of network, how will you do
it?
