Indicators of Success:
students feel comfortable to come to me with any issues they have due to the relationship
we created
Completing mindfulness activities everyday
Feeling mentally well myself
In order to create an inclusive learning environment, I created authentic relationships with the
students. This allowed the students to come to me with any issues that they were having.
An example of a student coming to me with an issue was she was having an anxiety attack. I
took her out of the classroom and completed a breathing exercise with her. I had her follow my
breathing where I Then I completed a modified five-finger breathing activity with her. First, I
told her to tell me 3 things she sees, 2 things she can hear, and 1 thing she can feel. Lastly, I let
her take a walk by herself, and after she came back and was able to participate with the rest of
the class again. This example shows that the relationship I created with her allowed her to feel
comfortable with me to help her through a tough time.
Another example of how I responded to the emotional needs of my students was working
collaboratively to support one student in my class. She has anxiety and to support her I made
sure to reach out to my TA and the school counselor to talk about strategies to support her.
Additionally, at teachers convention, I attended a session to help support students with anxiety in
the classroom. This session gave me some new strategies and also affirmed that the strategies I
have been using were good.
My professional practice has improved as I have learned lots about creating inclusive learning
environments. Not only must I respond to the needs of my students but also myself as when I am
emotionally and mentally well, I am better equipped to respond to my students. Moreover, I feel
more confident in helping students through their emotional needs. Lastly, I learned that I would
like to continue the mindfulness practice when I entre the teaching profession.
Student learning improves when students are in a safe environment. As a result of creating a safe
environment, I saw students coming to me with any issues they had. Additionally, continuing the
mindfulness practice after recess was really beneficial in helping students leave any negative
things that may have happened during recess behind and helping them entre a good mindset for
the rest of the day.

Indicators of Success:
Indigenous perspectives are incorporated into as many lessons as possible
I taught the History of Canada unit in Social Studies which allowed me to meet my goal of
integrating Indigenous knowledge and voices in my teaching practice. I started out the unit by
teaching about the correct terms to use when referring to an Indigenous person/group. Then,
students completed a jigsaw where they researched different Indigenous groups across Canada
by reading first hand textbooks and researching online. After, students compiled their
information on a jigsaw worksheet.
Next, we read stories of how Indigenous peoples are connected to the land from the We Are the
Land textbook. This textbook is created by different Indigenous groups across Canada as a part
of Truth and Reconciliation. Then, I showed the students different videos of Indigenous groups,
and at the end students had to write an exit slip of 3 things they learned and 1 thing that they
appreciate about the Indigenous peoples. Later, I made sure to connect student learning back to
the Indigenous peoples by having discussions about how colonization affected Indigenous
peoples’ way of life.
I felt that it was important to learn about the Indigenous peoples first as it centres student
learning around Indigenous peoples’ perspectives. I feel that by doing this, students now have a
better and holistic understanding of the history of Canada.
