CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT TEST
UNIT NAME: DATA COMMUNICATION AND COMPUTER NETWORK
UNIT CODE: BIT 2204

a)Describe the TWO techniques used for analog-to-digital conversion.(2

marks)
The First Technique to change an analog signal to digital data is pulse
code modulation.
The Second Technique is delta modulation.
After the digital data are created (digitization) then we convert the
digital data to a digital signal.
b)Differentiate between synchronous transmissions and asynchronous
transmissions (2 marks)
One of the primary differences is that Synchronous Transmission is
clock pulse driven whereas, Asynchronous Transmission is event
driven.

c)Network protocols are standards that allow computers to communicate.

Explain four important protocols, their jobs and acronym. (4 marks)

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
d)Analyze two types of media access control methods used in LANs (2
marks)
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD),
which is used in Ethernet networking.
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA).

e)Networking standards define the rules for data communications that

are needed for interoperability of networking technologies and processes.
List at least THREE Standards Organizations and identify different types of
Standards (3 marks)

The International Electrotechnical Commission.

The International Organization for Standardization.
The International Telecommunication union

f)Describe how Multiplexing works and discuss various multiplexing

techniques (4 marks)
Multiplexing is the process of combining multiple signals into one
signal, over a shared medium.

g)Data Encoding deals with how best to transmit data (0s and 1s) across
various media. Discuss the various Techniques of Encoding Data for
Transmission (4 Marks)
The first techniques of encoding Data for Transmission Amplitude
Modulation.
The second techniques of encoding Data for Transmission Frequency
Modulation.
The third techniques of encoding Data for Transmission Phase
Modulation.

h)Explain clearly the difference between Analog and Digital transmission

(2 marks)

Analog transmission conveys voice, data, image, signal, or video

information using an information signal that is continuously varying;
digital transmission transfers data over a transmission medium
discretely.

i)Signaling is achieved using one of TWO basic techniques. Name and

discuss these techniques giving one advantage and one disadvantage for
each. (4 marks)
Digital signals can be transmitted over transmission lines using either
serial or parallel communication. With serial communication, the
sequence of bits used to describe a value is sent in sequence along a
single transmission line.

j)List and explain THREE techniques of digital to analog conversion (3

Marks)
Frequency Shift Keying
In this conversion technique, the frequency of the analog carrier
signal is modified to reflect binary data.
Phase Shift Keying
In this conversion scheme, the phase of the original carrier signal is
altered to reflect the binary data.
Amplitude Shift Keying
In this conversion technique, the amplitude of analog carrier signal is
modified to reflect binary data.
