VERNACULAR TERMS USED IN CONSTRUCTION

Beam – Biga

a concrete beam is a load-bearing unit that can be used to carry both horizontal and vertical loads.
Known as reinforced concrete beams or reinforced cement concrete (RCC) beams, these beams are
made by encasing steel bars, plates, or fibers within the concrete.

Plumb bob – Pa hulog

A plumb bob is a weight with a pointed tip on the bottom that's hung from a string, and it's used to
establish a vertical reference (called a plumb line). It can be used to make sure that constructions are
plumb, but it can also be used in surveying to establish the nadir with respect to gravity at a specific
point.
alignment of the wall/masonry wall - Asintada

alignment of the wall means the outside face of a house wall as is or would be drawn as a straight
line on “as constructed” plans for the house.

Foundation- Pundasyon

Part of a structural system that supports and anchors the superstructure of a building and transmits
its loads directly to the earth. To prevent damage from repeated freeze-thaw cycles, the bottom of
the foundation must be below the frost line.

Framing- Balangkas

Framing, in construction, is the fitting together of pieces to give a structure support and
shape. Framing materials are usually wood, engineered wood, or structural steel. The alternative to
framed construction is generally called mass wall construction, where horizontal layers of stacked
materials such as log building, masonry, rammed earth, adobe, etc. are used without framing
Grout- Letsada

Grout is a composite material generally consisting of water, cement, and sand. It is typically used for
filling voids under machines or other structural elements, sealing joints and openings in surfaces and
reinforcing existing structures.

Lot boundary marker – Muhon

A boundary marker, border marker, boundary stone, or border stone is a robust physical marker that
identifies the start of a land boundary or the change in a boundary, especially a change in direction
of a boundary. There are several other types of named border markers, known as boundary trees.

Mark a straight line – Pitik

A chalk line or chalk box is a tool for marking
long, straight lines on relatively flat surfaces,
much farther than is practical by hand or with
a straightedge. They may be used to lay out
straight lines between two points, or vertical
lines by using the weight of the line reel as a
plumb line.
Cement mix- Halo

Cement is a substance used for binding and hardening other materials. Water and cement set and

harden through a chemical reaction known as 'hydration'. The process of hardening is described as
'curing', which requires particular conditions of temperature and humidity. Cement can be mixed
with a fine aggregate and water to produce mortar, used in masonry construction as
a bedding and adhesive to bind and fill the gaps between adjacent blocks of brick, concrete or stone.

Nylon String – Tansi

the nylon used to ensure that the wall and architectural finishes like tiles and cladding are properly
installed and aligned. It’s used as a guide.

Plan- Plano

A construction plan is a set of documents that defines the requirements for a construction project,
such as the activities, resources, schedule, and budget.
Plaster- palitada

Plaster is a building material used for coating, protecting, and decorating internal walls and ceilings.
It can also be used to create architectural moldings such as ceiling roses, cornices, corbels, and so
on. The most common types of plaster are a composition of gypsum, lime, or cement with water and
sand.

Pure cement- Puro

As the name suggests, this type of plaster protects the masonry wall from ingress of moisture and
thereby eliminating or reducing dampness of the wall.

Scaffolding – Andamyo

Scaffolding is widely used during construction and renovation activities. In its simplest form, a
scaffold is any temporary elevated or suspended work surface used to support workers and/or
materials.
Scratch coat plaster- Rebokada

the first coat applied in plastering has lines scratched on its surface to improve the bond with the
next coat.

Slab rebar- Parilya

Rebar, also known as reinforcement steel and reinforcing steel, is a steel bar or mesh of steel wires
used in reinforced concrete and masonry structures to strengthen and hold the concrete in tension.
To improve the quality of the bond with the concrete, the surface of the rebar is often patterned.
