MOCK MIDTERM EXAM (FOR PRACTICE

ONLY)
COURSE: ECOR 1048 FACILITATOR: Ava Sotoudehrad

It is most beneficial to you to write this mock midterm UNDER EXAM CONDITIONS. This means:
• Keep track of time.
• Work on your own and attempt every question.
• Keep your notes and textbook closed.

After the time limit, go back over your work with a different colour or on a separate piece of paper and
try to do the questions you are unsure of. Record your ideas in the margins to remind yourself of what
you were thinking when you take it up at PASS.

The purpose of this mock exam is to give you practice answering questions in a timed setting and to help
you to gauge which aspects of the course content you know well, and which are in need of further
development and review. Use this mock exam as a learning tool in preparing for the actual exam.

Please note:

 Complete the mock exam before attending the take-up session. During the session you can work
with other students to review your work.

 Often, there is not enough time to review the entire exam in the PASS workshop. Decide which
questions you most want to review – the Facilitator may ask students to vote on which questions
they want to discuss in detail.

 Facilitators will not distribute an answer key for mock exams. The Facilitator’s role is to help
students work together to compare and assess the answers they have. If you are not able to
attend the PASS workshop, you can work alone or with others in the class.

 PASS worksheets are designed as a study aid only for use in PASS workshops. Worksheets may
contain errors, intentional or otherwise. It is up to the student to verify the information
contained within by attending the PASS workshop.

Good Luck writing the Mock Exam!!

MOCK MIDTERM EXAM (FOR PRACTICE

1)Answer the questions below:

a) What is the difference between continuous and erratic motion?

b) What is the difference between position and displacement?

2) True or false:

a) A particle can have an acceleration and yet have zero velocity.

b) Curvilinear motion can only cause changes in the direction of the position,
velocity, and acceleration vectors.

c) The acceleration vector is always directed tangent to the path.

3) Solve the problems below:

1) During a test a rocket travels upward at 75 m/s, and when it is 40 m from the ground
its engine fails. Determine the maximum height s B reached by the rocket and its speed
just before it hits the ground.
While in motion the rocket is subjected to a constant downward acceleration of 9.81
m/s2 due to gravity. Neglect the effect of air resistance.

2) A particle moves along a horizontal path with a velocity of v = (3t 2 - 6t) m/s, where t is
the time in seconds. If it is initially located at the origin O, determine the distance
traveled in 3.5 s, and the particle’s average velocity and average speed during the time
interval.

3) The v–s graph describing the motion of a motorcycle is shown below. Construct the
a–s graph of the motion and determine the time needed for the motorcycle to reach the
position s = 400 ft.

4) A car starts from rest and travels along a straight track such that it accelerates at 10
m/s2 for 10 s, and then decelerates at 2 m/s 2. Draw the v-t and s–t graphs and
determine the time t needed to stop the car. How far has the car traveled?

5) For a short time, the path of a plane is described by y = (0.001x 2) m. If the plane is
rising with a constant upward velocity of 10 m/s, determine the magnitudes of the
velocity and acceleration of the plane when it reaches an altitude of y = 100 m.

6) At any instant the horizontal position of the weather balloon below is defined by
x =(8t) ft, where t is in seconds. If the equation of the path is y = x 2/10, determine the
magnitude and direction of the velocity and the acceleration when t = 2 s.

7) The velocity of a particle is given by v = {16t 2 i + 4t3 j + (5t + 2) k} m/s, where t is in

seconds. If the particle is at the origin when t = 0, determine the magnitude of the
particle’s acceleration when t = 2 s. Also, what is the x, y, z coordinate position of the
particle at this instant?

and then 10 s to go from C to A. Determine its average speed when it goes around the

down with a speed of 2 m/s.
