INTRODUCTION

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (2019) Spilled oil
can harm living things because its chemical constituents are poisonous. This can affect
organisms both from internal exposure to oil through ingestion or inhalation and from
internal exposure through skin and eye irritation. Oil can also smother some small
species of fish or invertebrates and coat feathers and fur like sea otters, sea birds,
whale, fishes, turtle, etc. reducing birds and mammal’s ability to maintain their body
temperature.

According to Mohit (2019) The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico on April 22 2010, which is
considered as the largest accidental oil spill in the history, released an estimated 210
million gallons of oil into the ocean. The spill was caused by the massive explosion at
the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the gulf region. The oil continuously flowed in the ocean
for over 85 days until it was remove on 15 th day of July 2010.The massive oil spill left
572 miles of shoreline covered with oil slick and cost the lives of thousands of birds and
marine creatures. Experts have stated that this oil spill will have long term
environmental impact.

According to Arnel Murga (2019) On August 11, 2006, The oil tanker M/T solar 1, hired
by Petron Corporation, sank off the coast of Guimaras, an island province in the
Philippines, Released an estimated 2.1 million liters (about 555,000 gallons) of bunker
fuel. It is still known as the largest oil spill in the Philippines’ history.
According to Coast Guard Philippines (2019) An oil spill incident at (DAPACOR) Davao
Packaging Corporation compound near Ising River, Carmen Davao del Norte, Released
an approximately 10,000 liters of blended fuel was reported to the Philippine Coast
Guard this March 6 2019

According to Khushboo Sheth (2017) India is the largest producer of banana in the
world with around 30 million tonnes of production a year and Philippines is the 4 th
largest producer of banana in the whole world with around 9 million tonnes of production
a year

According to Sahilchoudhury (2018) In early times, People use Booms and Skimmers to
clean the oil spill, Booms acts like a fence to prevent the oil from spreading, and
Skimmers is design to suck up or absorb the oil from the water, Skimmers can be
deployed onto boats to remove the contaminants from the water surface.

According to G. Alaa El-Din and M. Hussein (2018) Banana peels contain vitamin C and
vitamin E and they also contain potassium, zinc, iron, manganese, and it has sorption
capacity, that means, banana peel can be use in removing oil spill and it gives a good
result as a new and low cost agriculture waste for oil spill cleanup

Base on Royalty Society Publishing (2019) Pomelo a good sorption rate that is enough
to absorb oil and other organic pollutants.

According to https://www.tridge.com (2019) The world produces an average of 9.29

million of metric tonnes of pomelo per year.
MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study is composed of three phase: Phase I – Fruit peeling and Salt water
preparation, Phase II – Removing of Oil Spill Experimentation, and Phase III – Data
Collection and Analysis, All experimental procedures will be done in Davao Analytical
Laboratories Gen. Douglas MacArthur Highway,, Talomo, Davao City,Davao del Sur ,
Philippines. The unit of these analysis is the Spilled Oil, typically Crude

PHASE I – Preparation of Materials Needed

We will get the Banana (Musa acuminata) and the Pomelo (Citrus maxima) in the
Buhangin Public Market because it is the nearest public market in the researcher’s
house. Next, we will get the Salt water in Matina Aplaya, Davao City, We will get 15
Litters of salt water to be use in our experiment. After that, we will get the Oil at Caltex
Gasoline Station, We will get the most common Oil during Oil spill incident which is
Crude. Last, we will peel the Banana (Musa acuminata), we will need atleast 4 kilos of
Banana and 10 kilos of pomelo to be use in our experiment.

PHASE II – Experimentation
We will peel off 40 Banana and 20 pomelo to be use in our Ten times experiment. The
first three experiment we will only use banana peel, we will use 10 banana, 2 liters of
salt water, and 150 ml of crude oil on each of that first three experiment , in the 4 th,5th,
and 6th experiment we will only use Pomelo peel, we will use 5 pomelo peel, 2 liters of
saltwater, and 150 ml of crude oil on each of the three experiments, and in the last 4
experiments we will use both Banana peel and Pomelo peel to determine if they absorb
oil faster than using only one type of peel, In the last four experiminents we will use 10
banana peel,5 pomelo peel, 2 liters of salt water, and 150 ml of crude oil

PHASE III – Data Collection and Analysis

We will record the time that it takes for the banana peel alone to
absorb the oil, and also the time that it takes for the pomelo alone
to absorb the oil to determine which one of them absorbs the oil
faster, then we will record the results of the last four experiments
where we use both banana peel and Pomelo peel together to
determine if they are both more effective than a one type of peel
is used. We will capture and record our experiments and results
using an mobile phone.
