General account of the properties of Shisham wood


Eng.- Sissoo; Verna Shisham; Sanskrit- Shinshapa, arguru; Hindi- Shisham, sissu,
sissai ; Bengali - Shisu; Gujrati- Sisam, tanach; Tamil-Sissu ittil; Kannada- Agaru,
brindi; Punjab- Tali, shisham.
1. A deciduous tree, often with crooked trunk and light crown and commonly as
North Indian Rosewood, tree native to the Indian subcontinent and southern
Iran.
2. It occurs throughout the sub Himalayan tract from Ravi to Assam ascending up
to 5000 ft.
3. The sapwood is white to pale brownish white in colour and the heartwood
golden brown to dark brown with deep brown streaks becoming dull on
exposure.
4. The wood structure is diffuse porous; growth rings may not always visible.
Vessels are mostly large and not very numerous.
5. It is heavy, narrowly interlocked grained and medium textured.
6. It can be air or kiln seasoned. However, kiln seasoning enhances the value of
timber as the colour darkens and the difference between lighter and darker
bands gets intensified.
7. The wood can be converted into ornamental veneers or commercial plywood of
good quality.
8. It is durable timber, especially for under water use.
General morphological characteristics

1. Distribution: Distributed in the temperate regions of both northern and southern


hemispheres.
2. Habit: Tropical trees providing a valuable dark timber, hydrophytes and
xerophytes.
3. Root: Tap root system, branched
4. Stem: Tree attains height of about 100 ft. a girth up to 8 ft. and clear bole up to
35 ft. cylindrical woody
5. Leaves: Pinnate leaves with uneven number of leaflets. The leaves are composed
of 3-5 broadly elliptic or ovate, acuminate leaflets arranged alternately on
somewhat zigzag axis.
6. Inflorescence: Racemose, panicle
7. Flowers: Panicle of small, yellow or white papilionaceous and perigynous
flowers, hermaphrodite, irregular, calyx 5, gamosepalous, corolla 5 unequal,
aestivation descending imbricate
8. Androecium: Stamens usually 10, diadelphous, Monadelphous, anthers bicelled,
dorsifixed
9. Gynoecium: Carpel 1, free, superior ovary, marginal placentation.
10. Fruit: Fruit is thin, strap-shaped pod, 1-1/2- 4 inches long.
11. Seed: 1-4 flattened seeds, many, exalbuminous
12. Pollination: Entomophilous

Cultivation

Growing states: Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, Assam.

Climate and Temperature: It is primarily found growing along river banks


below 900 metres elevation. The temperature in its native range averages 10-
40ºC, but varies from just below freezing to nearly 50ºC.
Soil: Soil range from pure sand and gravel to rich alluvium of river banks. It
can grow in slightly saline soils.

Sowing: Seedlings are intolerant to shade. Propagation takes place commonly


by root suckers and also by seeds. The seeds remain viable for only few
months.

Rainfall: It can withstand average annual rainfall up to 2000 millimetres and


drought of 3-4 months.
Uses of Shisham wood

1. It is used for making high class furniture and cabinet wood throughout north
India.
2. It is highly valued as constructional and general utility timber on the account of
its great strength, elasticity and durability and is used for all the purposes for
which Indian rosewood is employed in South.
3. It is esteemed for railway sleepers, musical instruments, Charpai legs, hammer
handles, shoe heels, hookah tubes and tobacco pipes.
4. Carefully selected and manufactured plywood logs satisfy the specifications
prescribed for aircraft, and for this purpose, the wood from trees, growing on
canal banks and in plantations is considered to be the best.
5. It is used for making laminated skiis.
6. It can be worked into decorative ornamental carvings.
7. The pulp is used for making writing and printing papers.
