Grade 11: Isoprocess Vocabulary Dominoes

Concerning isoprocesses, there are words associated with them that we must know and use. This enables us
to speaks about and describe isoprocesses meaningfully. Match the terms in column B of the table below, with
the definitions/descriptions in column C by writing the correct number form column A into column D.

A B C D
1. energy A gas in which all collisions between atoms or molecules are
perfectly elastic and in which there are no intermolecular
attractive forces.
2. isobaric a physical system so far removed from other systems that it
does not interact with them OR a thermodynamic system
enclosed by rigid immovable walls through which neither
matter nor energy can pass.
3. Isothermal A process in which temperature of the system remains
constant; therefore, by the ideal gas laws, the product of the
volume and the pressure remains constant.
4. Isochoric A process in which the pressure of the system remains
constant. Both the volume and temperature change.
5. Adiabatic A process in which there is no heat exchange with the outside
world.
6. Open system A process in which volume of the system remains constant as
the pressure and temperature change.
7. Closed system a system that freely exchanges energy and matter with its
surroundings.
8. Isolated system Any material or object from which heat energy can be
extracted such as hot water, fire, incandescent bulb and/or
the sun
9. Isothermal expansion
The ability to do work

10. Isothermal contraction the energy contained within a system, excluding the kinetic
energy of motion of the system as a whole and the potential
energy of the system as a whole due to external force fields.
11. Ideal gas the increase in volume under constant-temperature
conditions
12. Energy source the process of changing energy from one of its forms into
another.
13. internal energy the reduction in space occupied by a gas under constant-
temperature conditions
14. Energy conversion the SI unit of work or energy, equal to the work done by a
force of one newton when its point of application moves one
metre in the direction of action of the force.
15. joules The walls of this system allow transfer of energy as heat and
as work, but not of matter, between it and its surroundings.
