The Pythagorean Spiral Project

You will create a poster of a Pythagorean spiral. The spiral needs to be
colored and creatively decorated. The table containing all calculations
needs to be attached to the back of your poster before turning it in.

Materials:
(1) poster board 13” x 16” – any color
(2) ruler
(3) pencil, colored pencils or markers 16 cm

Step 1: Place the poster board in landscape 12 cm

orientation. From the top left hand corner,
5 cm
measure 16 cm to the right and 12 cm down.
5 cm
This will be the starting point for your
spiral. Starting Point

Note: Accurately measuring the starting

point of your spiral will ensure that it fits on the poster board. If your
spiral goes off the side of the poster board you will need to redo it, so
please measure your starting point carefully!

Step 2: Using your ruler, create a segment that measures 5 cm. From the
starting point, draw a segment to the right, towards the center of the poster.
Make this segment parallel to the top of the poster.

Hint: You can use the corner of a piece of cardstock to construct a congruent
segment that is perpendicular to the original.

Step 3: Using your ruler, connect the endpoints of the two segments to create
the hypotenuse of a right isosceles triangle.

Step 4: Use the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the length of the

hypotenuse. Record the results in the table. Show all calculations.

***Write your answer in Reduced Radical Form (no decimals)***

Step 5: Using the hypotenuse of the
original triangle as one of the legs of
the new triangle, create a second right
triangle adjacent to your original triangle.
The hypotenuse of the first triangle will
be the base of the second triangle. Using
your piece of cardstock, construct a
segment perpendicular to the new base,
with a length of 5 cm. Using your ruler, connect the two segments to form the
hypotenuse of your second triangle.

Step 6: Use the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the length of the

hypotenuse. Record the results in the table. Show all calculations. Write your
answer in Reduced Radical Form (no decimals).

Step 7: Repeat this process of connecting and constructing new triangles with
a side length of 5 cm. For each new triangle, use the hypotenuse from the
completed triangle as the base of the new triangle. After constructing each
new triangle, show your calculations in the table. Continue to construct
triangles until you have formed a full spiral. The last triangle in the spiral
should slightly overlap the original triangle. If it doesn’t overlap, check your
calculations and make sure all triangles are right triangles.

Step 8: Decorate your Pythagorean Spiral. Use color and a pattern or theme
to make a creative picture.

Note: You must be able to see all sides of each triangle on your finished
project.

Turn In:
(1) Your poster, with lines shown for each triangle construction, colored
and creatively decorated.
(2) The table containing your calculations for each hypotenuse length,
attached to the back of the poster board.
(3) Make sure your name and class period are on the back of your project!
