What is Staphylococcus aureus or “staph” is a type of
Staphylococcus bacteria found on human skin, in the nose, armpit,
groin, and other areas.
Aureus? Staphylococcus aureus is spread by touching
infected blood or body fluids, most often by
contaminated hands.

.
S. aureus is the leading cause of skin and soft

.. tissue infections, such as abscesses, boils,

furuncles, and cellulitis (red, swollen, painful, warm
skin).

S. aureus germs can also cause infections in the

bloodstream, endocarditis (infection of the inner
lining of the heart chambers and heart valves),
pneumonia, bone, and joint illnesses, as well as
more severe infections.
What is Escherichia Coli is a particular kind of bacterium
that typically resides in the intestines, where it
Escherichia helps in the body's digestion and breakdown of
food.
Coli? Escherichia coli, however, comes in a variety of
kinds (or strains) (causing infections that can
spread to others). They can spread from infected
individuals or animals as well as through tainted
food and water sources.

.. . Escherichia coli can produce extremely painful,

bloody diarrhea. Sometimes they also result in
sepsis, bacteremia (a bacterial infection in the
blood), meningitis, pneumonia, and urinary tract
infections (a dangerous full-body response to
bacteremia). Particularly in extremely young or
very old persons, or in those with weakened
immune systems, certain infections can cause
major health issues.
Significance of Microbiology
in the Nursing Profession
Nurses can use their knowledge in microbiology in the
medical field to produce drugs, diagnose patients, and
use sterilization and sanitation techniques.

Nurses can use their understanding of microbiology to

handle patients and their samples that are infected with
communicable diseases while keeping them free of
pathogens.
