BASIC SKILLS IN BASKETBALL

Shooting

 Shooting is the most important skill in basketball. One might

be an expert in passing, dribbling and rebounding but when
one cannot shoot the ball, those skills are nothing. This is the
first skill to be learned. Every basketball player loves to shoot
the ball. Players spend a good deal of their practice time on
shooting drills to improve their skill level. Here’s how you can
improve your shooting skills in basketball:

 Remember BEEF (Balance, Elbow, Elbow, Follow

Through) when shooting the ball
 Be relaxed and concentrate on the basket.
 Know when you have a good shot and then take it.
 Be in proper balance when shooting the ball.
 Follow through on every shot you take.
 Jump naturally.
 “Up, hang, shoot!” is an easy way to remember this.
 Make sure you have an arc on every shot you take.
 Be relaxed when shooting free throws.
 Practice all your shots.

Types of Shooting:

1. Free throw is the privilege given to a player to serve one or

two points by unhindered throw for a goal from within the free
throw circle and behind the free throw line. Proper stance for
the free throw is feet comfortably apart. The shooting hand
must be in an “L” form. Slightly bend the knees to give
additional power in shooting the ball. Fully extend the arms to
release the ball and do a follow through movement.

4
2. Jump shot – the ball is to be released at the top of the vertical
jump.

3. Set Shot – Players usually use this kind of shot when they are
close to the basket. Place the ball in front of you. Do a
springing movement upward while aiming for the basket.
Then as you release the ball, fully extend your arms with a
follow through movement as you straighten your legs with only
the tip of your toes touching the ground.

5
4. Lay-up – is simply short range shot that usually hits the board.
It is being performed by running towards the basket. The right
handed shooter must do a lift or jump on his right foot and vice
versa for those who will be shooting using their left hand. Aim
the board in shooting the lay-up but do not hit it too hard.

Dribbling

 Dribbling is the basic skill which is done by pushing the ball

repeatedly to the floor. It allows you to move around the court
while you’re in possession of the ball. It is legal method that
allows you to advance with the ball and make a score as
opposed to that of passing it to a teammate to shoot it for the
basket.

Basic Types of Dribbling:

1. Side dribble. This is one way of dribbling the ball either on the
right or left side of the body.

6
2. Crossover dribble. Crossover dribbling can be done by
dribbling the ball by one hand then bouncing it in front to
change the dribbling hand to the other side.

3. Between the legs. Dribbling between the legs is one of the

best ways to protect the ball from a steal of the opponent.
Dribble the ball from right to left hand and let the ball passes
between the legs.

4. Behind the back. Dribble the ball with your left then let it
pass behind your back and have it bounce so it can move
towards the right hand.

7
Passing

 Basketball is a team game. By definition, that means all

players are involved with the process of playing the game and
should function as one. One of the primary skills created to
accomplish this is passing. It is a skill that maximizes the
involvement of all players in setting up a play to earn
successful shots and earn points for the whole team.

Types of Passing:

1. Chest Pass- this is the most basic pass used when there is
no opponent between you and the receiver. It is used for quick,
clean passing over short distance.

2. Bounce Pass – the bounce pass should travel from your

waist to the receiver’s waist. The ball should bounce about
2/3 of the way to the receiver. You should follow through as in
chest pass with your thumbs down. You can make the pass
with one or both hands.

8
3. Overhead Pass – it is used for passing over on opponent’s
head and especially useful for a taller player to use when
passing over a smaller opponent. Remember to watch for,
and aim at your receiver signal.

4. Baseball Pass – it is most often used to advance the ball up

the floor. This pass is designed for distance, speed and
initiating fast breaks.

9
Rebounding

 Rebounding is a basic skill done by grabbing a rebound after a

missed shot and gives your team a second chance to score.
On the other hand, when pulling down defensive rebound, a
player is limiting the opponent to just one chance at a basket.
Here’s how to make a good rebound:

 Practice good footwork and vertical leap or jumps.

 Anticipate where the ball will land.
 The longer the shot or the harder the rim, the farther the
bounces.
 Leg power and strong body are needed in rebounding
that’s why it is essential that strength and power
exercises should be considered to conditioning your
body.

Running

 Running is a basic skill done by moving from one place to

another in any direction. This is a basic skill that a basketball
player should possess, because in this sport, speed defines
the best. Whether you’re on the offensive or defensive side of
the game, passing, receiving, shooting, or rebounding a ball,
you always have to run in any way possible. Here are some
tips for you to improve your running skills:

 Always have a good pair of playing shoes.

 Always do a combination of dynamic stretching and
warm-up activities across the court before going out to
play a game.
