TITLE: CONSTRUCTING NEW HYBRIDS: APPLYING THE EXPERIENCES DURING

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC TO UTILIZE LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING
PRACTICES FOR THE NEW NORMAL
Reason(s)/Justification(s) in Choosing the Topic:

The COVID-19 pandemic posed novel and sudden changes in the education
sector around the world. One of the intervention practiced is the conduct of online and or
blended learning. Sharma (2021) defined blended learning as “a way of learning, combining the
traditional way of face-to-face classroom instruction and teaching with the help of digital
learning platforms and tools”. This was implemented to leverage the technology to improve
learning through EdTech-based teaching methods during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Consequently, there had been an increase in resourcefulness, dedication, and creativity for many
teachers, families, and students who are collaboratively building remarkable learning
experiences. NMC Horizon Report (2016) identified blended learning as one of the most
significant trends in education change.

Inevitably, the pandemic had resulted to students’ learning losses and alarming dropout
rates. On top of that, students are lacking social interaction and playtime which are essential to
their overall development and well-being. In one of the reports by UNESCO, it is mentioned
human interaction and well-being must be given priority in the post-pandemic.

To address these, the following main factors are listed to solidify the need for blended
learning for the new normal (Sharma, 2021): opportunity for collaboration, tracking learning
levels, increased access to learning, better communication, and preparation for a tech-oriented
world.

In order for the education stakeholders to attain their desired educational goals, it is
essential to bridge the learned experiences from the pandemic times and the new pedagogical
techniques in the new normal. With the joined efforts of the teachers, administrators, parents, and
the community, every learner can flourish in the language learning process and further develop
his/her learning goals.

Expected Contribution to the Growth of Knowledge in Education:

Bridging the best teaching practices during and after the pandemic can positively result to
a new perspective in language teaching and learning. Having technology on top of the scenario is
a game changer. Education stakeholders need to exert an essential amount of effort to develop
their knowledge in areas such as curriculum, teaching practices and strategies, classroom
activities, instructional materials, etc.

TITLE: EMPLOYING TIKTOK APPLICATION AS A MEDIUM FOR LEARNING

ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS AMONG ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
Reason(s)/Justification(s) in Choosing the Topic:

Unquestionably, social media had been continually revolutionizing the lifestyle of the
people in the present times. Nowadays, various social media platforms are affecting
communication, information delivery, knowledge exchange, commerce, education and all
different aspects of life (Rieger and Christoph, 2018; Bhatti et al., 2019; Amin et al., 2020). With
the vast spread of various social networking sites on the internet, researchers from different
fields have started to direct their attention and shed more light on the importance and impact of
social media on different aspects of life including social as well as educational aspects (Muftah,
2022).

Introduced by Zhang Yimin in 2016, TikTok is a social media network on a video

platform owned by ByteDance (Muftah, 2022). According to Wallaroo Media, there are over one
billion users of Tiktok in over 150 countries, one of the emerging social media applications in
the online world. In this digital era, social media is currently used not just for entertainment, but
for education purposes also. In fact, various social media are effective learning media to assist
the learning and teaching process. Gupta and Bashir stated that the four main purposes for using
social media applications are entertainment, socialization, informativeness, and academic (Yang,
2020). The expansive use of mobile technologies have established a magnificent possibility in
the development of language learning.

This study aims to learn how a TikTok application can become a medium of learning for
the pronunciation skill or pronunciation of students.

Expected Contribution to the Growth of Knowledge in Education:

Since Tiktok is one of the social media applications used by the Filipino learners
nowadays, this study might help the language learners improve their speaking skills through
producing videos and other substantial contents useful for learning pronunciation. The language
teachers can provide guidelines to the students and recommend contents to produce to ensure that
the goals of developing the targeted skills will be achieved. Lastly, the videos done can help
other Tiktok users and eventually motivate to create their own to add relevant knowledge in the

social media world. This can also alleviate the negative comments against the use of Tiktok here
in the Philippines.

TITLE: FACTORS AFFECTING THE ATTITUDES OF FILIPINO SENIOR HIGH

SCHOOL STUDENTS TOWARDS ENGLISH
Reason(s)/Justification(s) in Choosing the Topic:

Brought by the colonization, the Philippine education system used English the medium of
instruction. But even though it is used as a second language, not all Filipinos are proficient in
using it. According to Khastgir and Neogi (2017), “the importance of being educated in English
cannot be denied” (p. 13634). It is undoubtedly true because Filipinos use English as a means of
communication in the schools, in the corporate world, and in daily living. Therefore, one must be
proficient in it to be academically, corporately, and socially successful.

As stated by Koo (2008), English is “the language for economic advancement, academic
pursuits, and globalization”. For one to be successful, it is crucial to obtain an understanding of
the attitudes of the language learners first (Alam (2017). This calls for the teachers’
acknowledgement and respect towards the attitudes and beliefs of the learners towards learning a
language” (Mantle-Bromley, 1995, as cited in Tanni, 2015, p. 139).

Attitude is one of the important factors in succeeding in the process language acquisition.
Hence, before language learning to commence, learners must be prepared for the learning
process and teachers must be geared to facilitate. This gearing entails the understanding of the
various factors affecting their attitude towards learning. If successfully done, the teachers will
then be able to apply appropriate teaching strategies.

Expected Contribution to the Growth of Knowledge in Education

Upon the end of this study, it is expected to equip the teachers on using appropriate
teaching strategies to language learners. In doing so, students will start embracing language
learning because they were prepared before the learning starts and the teachers applied the proper
approach for their needs. Also, this study can benefit the language curriculum developers in
devising syllabi that are learner attitude-sensitive, thus, enhancing the quality of education.
