The Philippines is a disaster-prone country because of its geological place on

the Earth. The Philippines. Located along the Pacific ring of fire, the Philippines is
highly susceptible to seismic and volcanic risks, which result to destructive
earthquake and possible tsunami. The Philippines is one of the most cyclone-prone
countries in the world, lying on what is often described as the 'typhoon belt'.
Approximately 19-20 cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility annually,
with 7-9 reaching landfall. Climate change and pandemics are exacerbating those
risks. As said, pandemics had greatly affected the normal lives of the citizens, from
long shots of lockdown and strict distancing from people and mandatory face mask,
for the sake of safety and to avoid contact with Covid-19. The pandemic brought
many lesson that we need to be prepared and it introduces us to be prepared for
many risk we can encounter, form natural calamities to many other hazards.

Truly, having knowledge is a sword that present shield from many casualties
and possible sickness from many disasters. Through many years of studying and
participating in many drills, from earthquake, fire, first aid, and even smoking. Health
is a personal factors that needs to be protected or to be concise our lives. Thinking in
everyday, on what could possible happen, to us specially in our workplace we need
many plans. To reckoned with possible disasters in our workplace, the law office, it is
important to foresaw many hazard like fire, earthquake, virus, and even cigarettes, it
is important to be ready, or to be frank have a plan.

First the evacuation plan for earthquake, as the workers said it is important to
get away from the glass and many cabinets in the office that might fall of and cause
injuries. The plan is to secure this things so it will reduce the risk of falling off. Next is
properly execute the duck cover and hold technique, in all fairness many tables are
strong enough to hold may debris of cements that could fall off. Duck down to the
floor, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Remember: Avoid danger spots near windows, hanging objects, mirrors, or tall
furniture. If you take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, hold on to it and be
prepared to move with it. Follow the evacuation plan designed in the workplace.
After the said events, it is important to check for injuries and treat the casualties we
have.

We also have the fire, it is important to have something to extinguish the

flame so it will not cause big trouble, especially the office is full of important
document. We can say we have water to extinguish the fire that can be from the
kitchen. But we are talking gas leak, it is important to wet a towel and throw directly
in the gas tank, or in simple move just close it. In suggestion, is it better to provide
fire extinguisher and to install many smoke detectors and water sprinkler to avoid
further big damages and possibly casualties.
Health related risk is also being watched. We all know pandemic affects our
lives in an imaginable way, however it is important to follow the protocols especially
in the workplace. As a law-abiding office it is important to follow the given protocols
of the Department of Health. Wear facemask and face shield, sanitize your hands,
practice one-meter physical distancing and limit physical interaction, ensure good
indoor ventilation and air flow. It is important because it promotes the safety of the
clients and also the safety of the office workers.

Lastly, we have no smoking office. We all know smoking can cause major
health problems in the human body directly affecting the hearth and lungs alongside
with the none smokers who didn’t have a choice but inhale the rest. Firsthand smoke
is the stream of smoke inhaled directly by the person using the tobacco product. It
comes from cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookahs and vaping devices. The deadly
dangers of firsthand smoke have been documented for decades. Secondhand smoke
exposure occurs when people breathe in smoke breathed out by people who smoke
or from burning tobacco products. There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand
smoke; even brief exposure can cause serious health problems and be
deadly.Thirdhand smoke (THS) is a term used to describe the residual contamination
from tobacco smoke that lingers in rooms long after smoking stops and remains on
our clothes after we leave a smoky place. It may seem merely like an offensive smell,
but it is also indicative of the presence of tobacco toxins. Also it can cause fire which
can burn all the documents in the office and can result to casualties or even health.
Smoking can be in a form of tobacco or electric cigarettes.
Documentations
Reflections

What are the different things you prepare when there’s a disaster that would come? Water

1. Portable, battery-powered radio or television and extra batteries

2. Flashlight and extra batteries
3. First aid kit and manual
4. Sanitation and hygiene items (moist towelettes and toilet paper)
5. Matches and a waterproof container
6. Whistle
7. Extra clothing
8. Kitchen accessories and cooking utensils, including a can opener
9. Photocopies of credit and identification cards
10. Cash and coins
11. Special needs items, such as prescription medications, eye glasses, contact lens
solution, and hearing aid batteries
12. Items for infants, such as formula, diapers, bottles, and pacifiers

Do you think you are prepared when there’s a disaster?

We think yes, aside from the things we mentioned. It is also important to have a
conditioned mind and a sufficient knowledge on the possible catastrophes we can imagine.
It is better to have a plan and to know the evacuation plan of the house and the community.
In the knowledge we have in school regarding disaster readiness it can suffice the needed
information and can build a citizen that is ready to face any disaster, to be safe from
casualties and of course, psychological factors. In school we are taught on how to prepare
for earthquake, on how to do proper duck, cover and hold techniques, what to avoid, and
what to do during and after earthquake. In case of tsunamis, it is said to go to higher places,
volcanic eruptions is to stay away from the 10km radius and to wear facemask, to avoid
inhaling poisonous gasses. Typhoons is the number 1 calamity that destroys the life of us, it
is important to learn what to do before, during, and after the typhoon. Always listen to
authorities regarding in any updates. In case in other hazards like fire, cigarettes, pandemic,
and etc, listening and asking is a must. As they said enough knowledge can be a shield from
onslaught.

How can you say that you are prepared?

We can say if we are ready mentally, realities can be measured especially how can a
disasters can affects and change the course of my life. We only have knowledge which can
be a part on how to be ready and cope up with the calamities. But we are talking about
possibilities, loss of property or even a life. If we are ready we can say we are mentally stable
because panics cannot change anything, as well as we can’t change reality. What ever can
happen we must accept and be ready, for the sake of our physical and mental stability, and
for those who put their lives on us. For reality, we can say we are not prepared because we
can’t handle the possible loss we will be having. We can see a lot of stories of survivors, that
they are prepared physically but not mentally leaving to sadness and tears. We cannot
directly point we are prepared, physically like things we are, but mentally we are not.
