Deep purple was created in 1968, they were British.

They were considered a

hard rock, heavy metal band. They always were 5 members even if they changed
a little in 50 years of existence.
They formed with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath the « Unholy trinity »,
which were the precursor bands to heavy rock. Their sound was characterized by
a Fender Stratocaster which is still today a very known and appreciated guitar
and an Orgue Hammond. It’s a very expensive electric orgue, its price can go up
to 25k$, its sound is very iconic. Deep purple received the Innovator Award
during the CR awards which proves that they really opened the gate to a new era
of rock music. They sold 130million discs in total.

The turmoil of their decades

The 60s had landed the world and its groupie with a cultural hangover.
The decade of free love, peaceful protest and sticking flowers in soldiers’ guns
was over, and the grim 70s – oil shortages, over-generous sideburns, Margaret
Thatcher, punk – was just getting into its stride. It was the decade of the record
player and cassette recorder. It was a decade of strikes - postal workers, miners
and dustmen. During the summer of 1976 the weather turned so dry that water
supplies reached critical low levels.
They experienced two very different Prime ministers ; first James
Callaghan from 1976 to 1979 who was a part of the Labour movement, Labour
being a party created by syndicalists. Whereas from 1979 to 1990, Margaret
Thatcher had become the Prime Minister and had a very conservative way of
thinking and acting.
People that would create movements like the metal or punk one were from
the very disadvantaged social cues and wanted some change. It was carried in
the heavier and liberating music they wanted to listen to.
Meanwhile, it’s not the only rebellious move from Deep Purple, they also
wrote thoughtful lyrics like in The flight of the rat. This song accuses the queen
of not paying attention to the misery of the British workers.
Their influence

Deep Purple has influenced the rock genre of music since its beginning.
The influence of this band is still very present in a lot of music we hear. Some of
the most famous bands of the world such as Metallica or Queen have been
influenced by them.

Their influence found itself especially in their famous guitar riffs, like the
riff from Smoke On The Water, from Deep Purple's 1972 album Machine Head
which came fourth in Radio 2's Greatest Guitar Riffs chart. But also find itself in
very loud song and concerts. For the record, Deep Purple were cited in 1972 as
the world's loudest band by the Guiness Book of World Records for a concert at
the London Rainbow Theatre, the high of decibel being way upon the safe limit.
Their song were long, loud and powerful in a time were people were going to
turn themselves to clam, pop music, allowing to the other groups that followed
them to be as loud and powerful as Deep Purple was. (But under the safe limit of
course).
