Online Social Networks

What is Online Social Networks
•Social networking can occur for social purposes,
business purposes or both through sites such as
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Classmates.com and
Yelp. Social networking is also a significant target area
for marketers seeking to engage users.
Networks – Face book
•Facebook is a social networking site that makes it easy for
you to connect and share with family and friends online.
Originally designed for college students, Facebook was
created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while he was enrolled at
Harvard University. By 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with
a valid email address could join Facebook. Today, Facebook
is the world's largest social network, with more than 1 billion
users worldwide.
Why use Facebook?

• There are already a lot of other ways to communicate online, like

through email, instant messaging, and so on. What makes Facebook
unique is the ability to connect and share with the people you care
about at the same time.
• For many, having a Facebook account is now an expected part of
being online, much like having your own email address. And because
Facebook is so popular, other websites have worked to integrate
Facebook. This means we can use a single Facebook account to sign
in to different services across the Web.
How does Facebook sharing work?

• Facebook allows you to send messages and post status updates to

keep in touch with friends and family. You can also share different
types of content, like photos and links. But sharing something on
Facebook is a bit different from other types of online communication.
Unlike email or instant messaging, which are relatively private, the
things you share on Facebook are more public, which means they'll
usually be seen by many other people.
WhatsApp
• WhatsApp is a free messaging app to make audio and video calls,
send files, take and send pictures, and much more. WhatsApp
is available as a smartphone app for Android and iPhone, a desktop
version, and a limited web browser version. To begin
using WhatsApp, we must register your mobile device phone number
with it.
• Brian Acton and Jan Koum created WhatsApp after leaving their jobs
at Yahoo in 2009. With a staff of just 50, they gradually built up
WhatsApp into a serious contender against heavyweights such
as Facebook Messenger and Skype.
Twitter
• Twitter is an online news and social networking site where people
communicate in short messages called tweets. Tweeting is posting
short messages for anyone who follows you on Twitter, with the hope
that your words are useful and interesting to someone in your
audience.
• Twitter employs a purposeful message size restriction to keep things
scan-friendly: every microblog tweet entry is limited to 280
characters or less. This size cap promotes the focused and clever use
of language, which makes tweets easy to scan, and challenging to
write. This size restriction made Twitter a popular social tool.
How Twitter Works
• Twitter is easy to use as either broadcaster or a receiver. You join
with a free account and Twitter name. Then you send broadcasts
(tweets) daily, hourly, or as frequently as you like. Go to the What's
Happening box next to your profile image, type 280 or fewer
characters, and click Tweet. People who follow you, and potentially
others who don't, will see your tweet.
YouTube
• YouTube is an American online video sharing and social media
platform headquartered in San Bruno, California. It was launched on
February 14, 2005, by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. It is
owned by Google, and is the second most visited website, after
Google Search. YouTube has more than 2.5 billion monthly users[7]
who collectively watch more than one billion hours of videos each
day.[8] As of May 2019, videos were being uploaded at a rate of more
than 500 hours of content per minute.
• It is a free video sharing website that makes it easy to watch online
videos. You can even create and upload your own videos to share
with others. Originally created in 2005, YouTube is now one of the
most popular sites on the Web,
Individual Interactions and Education in a Virtual
Environment

interaction between the learner and the teacher who is mostly referred to as
facilitator.
• Online learning has been embraced by many learners and it is fast becoming
an accepted mode of gaining education in many learning institutions . Online
learning is an open and flexible mode of learning where learners can engage
in the acquisition of knowledge while at the same time engaging in other
