ASSIGNMENT 3

Generate business ideas for entrepreneurial support through

brainstorming.

 What is Brainstorming?
Brainstorming is a method design teams use to generate ideas to solve clearly defined design
problems. In controlled conditions and a free-thinking environment, teams approach a
problem by such means as “How Might We” questions. They produce a vast array of ideas
and draw links between them to find potential solutions.

 How To Use Brainstorming Best?

Brainstorming may seem to lack constraints, but everyone must observe eight house rules
and have someone acting as facilitator

1. Set a time limit – Depending on the problem’s complexity, 15–60 minutes is normal.

2. Begin with a target problem/brief – Members should approach this sharply

defined question, plan or goal and stay on topic.

3. Refrain from judgment/criticism – No-one should be negative (including via

body language) about any idea.

4. Encourage weird and wacky ideas – Further to the ban on killer phrases like
“too expensive”, keep the floodgates open so everyone feels free to blurt out
ideas (provided they’re on topic).

5. Aim for quantity – Remember, “quantity breeds quality”. The sifting-and-

sorting process comes later.

6. Build on others’ ideas – It’s a process of association where members expand on

others’ notions and reach new insights, allowing these ideas to trigger their own.
Say “and”—rather than discourage with “but”—to get ideas closer to the problem.

7. Stay visual – Diagrams and Post-Its help bring ideas to life and help others see
things in different ways.

8. Allow one conversation at a time – To arrive at concrete results, it’s essential to

keep on track this way and show respect for everyone’s ideas.

 Brainstorming Techniques
 Mind Map
 Word Map

 What is a Mind Map?

A Mind Map is an easy way to brainstorm thoughts organically without worrying about
order and structure. It allows you to visually structure your ideas to help with analysis and
recall. A Mind Map is a diagram for representing tasks, words, concepts, or items linked to
and arranged around a central concept or subject using a non-linear graphical layout that
allows the user to build an intuitive framework around a central concept. A Mind Map can
turn a long list of monotonous information into a colourful, memorable and highly
organized diagram that works in line with your brain's natural way of doing things. Here is
an example of an outline for vacation plans. It only takes a few moments to go through the
list of locations and activities. But by the time you get to the bottom of the outline, do you
even remember what you read at the top? Take that same information and view it in Mind
Map. You can now overview the information much faster and recall the data much more
easily.

 What is Word Map?

Similar to a mind map, a world map is a visual way to brainstorm things like your business
name or tagline. Start by writing down all the words related to your business or brand goals.
For example, if you want to start an organic gardening business, you might write “organic”
and “Gardening.” For each word, write down related words that come to mind.

 The 5 Benefits of Brainstorming:

1. Outside Input:
Brainstorms allow for others to freely propose ideas. It can be extremely difficult to
come up with new ideas being the person closest to the issue. Inviting others into the
conversation to figure out new ways of doing things allows people less familiar on
the issue to speak openly about ideas they are thinking of. Not every idea is going to
be great, but that’s where the next point comes in.

2. Idea Building:
Each idea that is brought up doesn’t have to stand on its own. It’s important to state
ideas even if they aren’t the perfect solution because it can help make something
click for someone else. The concept of idea building is sharing ideas, which triggers
new ideas, which creates a chain of new thoughts. The only way idea building can
thrive in a brainstorming session is if no ideas are immediately shut down. This will
discourage people from sharing and in turn will limit the success of the session.

3. Breaks Routine:
Another benefit of having a brainstorming session is to get out of a normal routine.
Maybe there are no apparent issues to be solved with how things are operating. A
brainstorming session over a project can still be beneficial because it can reveal
improvements you didn’t even know you needed.

4. List Generation:
Each session should have at least one person writing ideas down so no idea is lost.
One of the best parts of leaving a brainstorming session is the list of ideas you can
take with you and build off of in the future. Not everything may be applicable
immediately, but a list of ideas can help you think creatively for months after the
actual session took place.
