No other letter is less-used in comics to start the names of characters- even "Z" gets used more
often. There's only a couple of semi-decent names, but Quasar and Quicksilver ain't too shabby-
both are Avengers who were prominent at one point or another. The rest are mostly-losers and
forgotten types- the next most-prominent are characters like Queen, Quagmire (from Squadron
Supreme, not Family Guy's sexual predator), and Quasimodo (the computer with the ugly face).

-Man, you thought I'd statted some piece of shit characters before? These guys ASPIRE to be
pieces of shit. These guys would look at literal human feces the way the nerdy kid looks at
the High School Quarterback in a John Hughes movie. These guys are TERRRRIBLE.
They're just some highly-armored goons appearing in the Gene Dogs book, acting as their
recurring nemeses for four issues. I refuse to even make most of them PL 7s.

Vulnerable (Mind Control)- The Squadron Supreme have proven themselves very easy to
take over mentally for some reason, as it has happened several times. This may be random
chance, or an actual weakness.
Responsibility (B-Modded Villain)- Having been Behavior Modified by the Squadron, the
ex-Institute of Evil members are unable to break the law for any reason, betray any Squadron
member for ANY reason, etc. Their minds are no longer truly their own..
Responsibility (The Utopia Program)- The Squadron has founded a program designed to cure
all the world's ills- Crime, Poverty, Disease, War... even Death itself. Some members are
more dedicated than others, but they all strive to help.
-Quagmire's lot in the series was to be B-Modded into servitude, but lack the social graces
anyways, so he still acted like a horn-dog punk, drawing the ire of Blue Eagle (Dr. Spectrum
confessed he was starting to like the guy, though). However, he was shown to be truly heroic
anyways, as he nearly suffocated on the nerve-gas agents used on the Pacifier Pellets in a
factory explosion, as he pulled dozens of men to safety by himself. Trapped in a coma, he
began leaking the same goo-energy he wielded from his NOSE, creating a massive problem
for the team, and killing Dr. Decibel. With his life support plug removed, he vanished,
alongside all his goo, where he reappeared in the Marvel Universe proper to harrass Quasar
(in another Gruenwald book) a couple of times, but has not appeared since the mid-1990s.
-Quagmire is fairly one-sided, but that is one REMARKABLE Snare. It's literally FOUR
different Affliction effects, all hitting simultaneously- he goes across the Snare-type ones
(Vulnerable & Hindered lines), Dazzles visuals by obscuring people's sight, AND it
Suffocates people, leaving them Incapacitated at the end. And that's NOT ALL! He uses it at
Range, makes in Cumulative (building up over time), THEN makes it Progressive (the Snare
gets worse as you struggle with it, as well as the Suffocation), and THEN it's Contagious
(anyone touching you will also get stuck). High physical Abilities to go along with the best
Snare effect I've ever seen in comics to make Quagmire a FEARSOME opponent. He's still
only PL 7.5 on defense, though, so you've got a better chance of stopping him than most guys
with incredibly-expensive powers.

-This guy's so obscure that after his debut, only MARK GRUENWALD really used him- He's
a Dakkamite who gained his powers from his proximity to Earth's sun... wait, what? Yeah,
he's a parody/pastiche of DC's Superman & Daxamite concept, but as a villain who we only
saw a couple times before he vanished. And like most obscure alien characters, he appears in
The Stranger's lab in an issue of Gru's Quasar. There, it turns out that he was given powers
deliberately, placed in a power capsule years ago by the Dakkamites, hoping to see what
super-powers he and nine others would gain- the others were abducted earlier and gained
lesser powers, calling themselves the Power Platoon. Quantum mind-controlled Wundarr the
Aquarian (himself a Dakkamite, and the reason why Quantum & his allies had been
empowered in the first place; he was the first one who went to Earth and gained powers) and
faced the Avengers West Coast again, but fled when the Platoon abandoned him.
-Quantum's got super-strength and a few other weird powers as well, and I have no idea how
strong he's supposed to have been. Thankfully, I actually have read issues with this guy in
them now, so I have a better idea as to what he's supposed to be like.
-So he's PL 10 (214), being very expensive and having a few odd powers- he's a Flying Brick
with an Aura.. and Duplication? Yeah, they made a Class whatever (strong enough to hurt
'80s Wonder Man & Iron Man) guy who could DUPLICATE himself.

Responsibility (Protector of the Universe)- As the chosen of Eon, Wendell has been charged
with a great number of tasks, many of which interfere with his daily life.
-First as Marvel Boy, then Marvel Man, Wendell joins the S.H.I.E.L.D. Super-Agents, but
like half of them turned out to be villains. He then became the security chief of Project:
Pegasus, a very boring, generic "Science Facility" that just ends up being the place where evil
super-tech ends up. Helping against countless super-villain attacks, he shows up in the
backgrounds of some Marvel Two-In-One and hangs out with the Thing. Eventually, he just
takes the name "Quasar" and it sticks.
-Having read the first Trade Paperback collecting his series, and flipped through another
couple issues I own, I came to some observations. The book is fundamentally good, and full
of information (Quasar does a lot of "finding the history of this character"-type stuff-
Continuity Porn for the continuity-obsessed Gru)... but it is also REALLY, REALLY
BORING. It reads more like an "Encyclopedia of Marvel's Cosmic Scene" than an actual
narrative book- on issue is the most eyelid-dropping thing I've possibly ever read: an endless
dissertation of the nature of Cosmic Beings and why they appear the way they do- because
there's a dimension where they keep "M-Bodies" that they inhabit to talk to mortals, of
course! Like... we would have accepted "just because". Wendell himself is hilariously-
uninteresting, and Mark makes him a bit too Genre Savvy (avoiding all of the standard "Hero
(vs) Hero" fights, and even some VILLAINOUS fights, by talking his way out before
anything can happen and being boringly rational with his defensive-oriented powers)- the
result is basically a big, dry bore. More scholarly than good.
-Overall, it was like Gru just kinda wanted to outline all his stuff (he was a stat-junky even
more than *I* am), at the expense of characterization. The art is usually quite good- Greg
Capullo (who went on to do X-Force, then Spawn, altering his style HEAVILY in the
process) was just starting out, and made a lot of cutesy, big-eyed characters (Wendell's big
eyes and baby-lips make him look like a 17-year old boy, and the fights actually make Quasar
look a HECK of a lot more powerful than I anticipated- it features a scene where Quasar
nearly effortlessly defeats Venom. Venom at the time was the hottest new Spidey villain in
decades, and had JUST debuted- so a win like that seemed almost completely bizarre.
Quasar Disappears:
-In the end, the comic faded away after Wendell stopped the villains in the mega-arc, and said
villains disappeared (I haven't seen Maelstrom in an eternity). Gru's unfortunate death was
pretty much his last gasp. He fakes his death and leaves Earth when his family is threatened
by The Presence, and also controls the New Universe's Star Brand for a time, but largely
fades away. He's briefly in Avengers Infinity with some other un-used Avengers, does little in
the "Kang War" in Busiek's Avengers, and it's really a "thing" again for ten or so years until
he is killed in the final moments of the mega-event Annihilation, dying fighting Annihilus
alongside Nova. A furious Nova then kills the villain. This gave some more human stakes to
the event (which was mostly wiping out faceless alien hordes), and was more or less
Wendell's last bit of relevance.
-Wendell returns within a few years, as a being made of Quantum Energy- Captain Mar-
Vell's daughter Phyla ended up becoming the new "Quasar" for a time. Wendell joins The
Annihilators, a squad of "All Powerhouse" characters in a spin-off to the Cosmic Stuff of the
time, fighting the Dire Wraiths, the Magus, and more- this book doesn't last long. In an odd
bit, he's willingly manipulated by the Cosmic Cube "Kobik" in the Pleasant Hill story, as his
Quantum Bands were acting up- at the end of the story, he gives the Quantum Bands to a
young S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent named Avril Kincaid, training her to be the next "Quasar" (Phyla
was already dead by this point).
Quasar Overall:
-Wendell Vaughn is a tricky character to assess- I've met people who LOVE him, like my old
friend/cowriter Azrael/Lightbend (Ares & Kreuzritter remember him), who considered
Quasar his favorite book- looking at Azrael's stuff, I definitely see why. His favorite thing
was cosmic beings and the origins of the universe... and powerful characters. Really, really
powerful characters. But Quasar's fanbase was rather small, and the character was forgotten
BEFORE Gru's book, and forgotten AFTER it, with only a tiny handful of writers even
bothering with him. I mean, there's plenty of decent under-utilized characters, but we're
talking about a guy who spent maybe five years of a 42-year career being relevant to
anything. It's actually a little sad. Personally, I never found the character interesting, and his
powers were so obviously a rip-off of the Green Lantern Ring that I never took him that
seriously, but I can see why a lot of people adored him for cutting through the "usual comic
book stuff" like Mandatory Super-Hero Fights (he tries to avoid this in the Avengers arc with
Alpha Flight & the People's Protectorate), choosing to talk his way out of things. The trouble
is... those are the FUN parts of comics, and were tropes for a reason. The boring, scholarly
nature of Quasar really wasn't for me, either.

Reputation (Rookie Hero)- Quasar was considered the "baby" of The Avengers for several
years of our-time.
-Quasar, like alot of Avengers, comes in over-pointed, even in his "old" format. Quasar was
generally always more powerful than he was talented or skilled, though he was QUITE a bit
more powerful than I first imagined- I figured him for a basic Plucky Rookie PL 10 with a
ton of power, but then in his book he's kicking the ass of Venom, amongst others. Those
bands are hella-powerful, allowing for +11 Damage Area Effects, a +12-14 Cosmic Blast, a
Snare, Teleportation, Flight, etc., all while being protected with a Force Field (which he can
further enhanced as part of his Dynamic Array). And you can probably Power Stunt more.

-Last I saw, she got her head chopped off, but since the whole Guardians squad got res'd
shortly thereafter, she was okay, gaining a skull-covered costume- it turns out that to save
Moondragon's life from Maelstrom, she agreed to become the new avatar of Oblivion, cosmic
destroyer. Buuuuuuuuuuuuut then she was killed handily by the Magus in the "Cancerverse"
storyline, failing to succeed in her goal. But then she was resurrected in a cocoon, like Adam
Warlock was... but was killed OFF-PANEL by Thanos! Yeah, there's a reason why most fans
stopped caring about the Cosmic stuff around that time. She is later revealed to have been
trappepd inside the Soul Gem along with Warlock, but she has not reappeared in years,
seemingly been buried thanks in part to the movies and a new set of writers who weren't
David, Abnett or Lanning (who wrote the vast majority of her other stuff).
Phyla-Vell As a Whole:
-So Phyla ends up being a very weird character- I hated her at first- she was the wrong kind
of "That Guy" teammate, just scowling and yelling about everything, and a bit stereotypical
as far as the "hateful lesbian" thing went. But they ended up kind of making her likable in the
end... only to kill her THREE FRIGGIN' TIMES over the course of a 4-year timespan,
messing about with her nature and powers too much, and then killing her offhand because the
wheels were coming off Abnett & Lanning's run and they seemed to want to just get rid of
some characters. Ironically, just in time for when "Superpowered Lesbian Couple" would
have been a thing Marvel would have LOVED to promote as part of their diversity agenda.
But the Guardians book had a whole host of characters jettisoned pretty much the second the
movies came out with an abridged five-pesron cast, and I've a feeling we won't be seeing her
again until she pops up in those.
-One thing that's definitely noticeable when you check images of her is that THEY. JUST.
KEEP. REDESIGNING HER! Like, they have this "attractive sneering lesbian with short
hair" design, but they can't decide where any of that shit on her goes, so you get Christian
imagery, Cosmic logos, big hoods, no hoods, skintight clothes, armor, swords, cosmic power,
etc., as they keep making her look alterately like a comic book superheroine or a video game
character, and it just makes it clear there was no central design process behind her. Like the
character is so ill-defined that the next creative team just revamps her look and tries to go
with what's cool, in some kind of hope that THIS time, their Diversity Hire will take.
Phyla's Powers:
-Phyla mixes some minor-league Super-Strength with a high-powered Blast and a really
dangerous Sword attack (she's PL 11 in melee and at range), basically copying parts of my
Quasar build and adding some extra stuff. She can keep a few things going at once, can either
redirect or take a powerful energy blast, fly, shield her mind, snare people, etc. She's not at
Wendell Vaughn's level of versatility yet (she basically just likes to hit stuff and complain a
lot), but she's a bit more costly, and a bit more dangerous because she likes to go All-Out.
Oh, and her "Martyr" run is not on here, as she expressed almost zero new powers, and was
only around for a maximum of like seven issues before 'dying'. We'll see with that one.

Motivation (Jerk)- Quasimodo tends to just act negatively and aggressively for no particular
reason.
-Quasimodo is one of those minor-league, forgotten Silver Age characters that just kind of
got left behind. I mean, Super-Skrull gets taken seriously TO THIS DAY, Mister freakin'
HYDE shows up in stories every few years, and they still dust off the Impossible Man every
once in a while. But Quasimodo? Quasimodo almost NEVER shows up. I chalk it up to him
being kind of a "filler" design- he's just an ugly face on a robot body, lacking iconic elements
like the "Computer-Image Face" Arnim Zola or the "Floating Head" M.O.D.O.K. and other
goofball Kirby designs.
-Quasimodo is a sentient computer invented by the Mad Thinker, but abandoned as a failed
idea. The Silver Sufer, now trapped on Earth by his former master Galactus, feels pity for the
poor creature and creates a humanoid body for him. However, Quasi immediately becomes
psychotically jealous of his still hideous body compared to the Surfer's perfect one, and
attacks. He is promptly rendered immobile once more, and the Surfer takes his leave.
-Quasimodo thus became one of those "Journeyman Villains" traded around- he fought
Captain Mar-Vell, The Beast, Spider-Man & Hawkeye, the Fantastic Four and Rom all in
various "filler" issues as a one-off threat, until the Vision cast his consciousness into space.
The character thus disappears for DECADES, turning up only in Dark Reign, where Norman
Osborn gains access to him, and uses his services as an analyst, compiling dossiers on various
superhumans so Marvel can sell Bio-Books on them (but I mean, who wants to read BIOS of
COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS?). He has turned up very recently in a story involving Arno
"Iron Man 2020" Stark.
-Quasimodo is Just Another Kill-O-Bot for the most part, though is a cyborg in this instance.
Many times he's literally just an "immobile computer" and not a guy you actually punch to
death, though.

Motivation (Power)- Queen wishes to take over as much as possible.
-Queen is a modern character from the Spidey books- she was the first female marine in
combat during World War II (apparently there WERE women in the Corps by that point, but
I'm unsure how many ever actually saw combat), but was subjected to radiation on Bikini
Atoll so that the government could make more Captain Americas- she was the only survivor,
and still carried a ton of mental problems that resulted in her being left in a military asylum.
Eventually, she shifted into an Insect/Human Hybrid that was able to take over several New
Yorkers with "insect genes" (??), which brought her into conflict with Spider-Man. She uses
her powers to mutate Spidey on different occasions, always so that he would hump her and
make arthropod babies- this is the means by which he temporarily gained his "Organic
Webbing" and other powers that were soon written out.
-She returned in the Spider Island story, changing Pete again, as well as threatening all of
New York. Finally, after a protracted battle that involves all of the Avengers, she is killed by
Kaine, who broke out of her thrall.
-Queen is the classic kind of annoying "Mind Control Over Wide Areas" sort of character,
albeit she could only affect those with "atavistic" genes related to insects (bios only mention
insects, despite people like Peter Parker clearly having SPIDER-Genes instead). She's also
super-strong, has a nasty Sonic Scream (enough to basically stun Spider-Man and make his
ears bleed- more of an "Internal Damage" kind of thing), and is a pretty good fighter. But her
army of thralls is the REAL threat- apparently "Insect Genes" applies to 1/3rd of all
humanity.

-Queen Veranke showed up as the new ruler of the Skrull Empire, but more dramatically, was
revealed to have been SPIDER-WOMAN for the entire duration of Bendis's run on The New
Avengers! Thus, the big reinvention of Jessica Drew (said to be a fave of Bendis) was all a
lie, and she was actually this evil Queen. Drew was chosen because she'd been allied with
S.H.I.E.LD., HYDRA and various superheroes. Her backstory states that she was a prophet of
sorts, regrouping her people after Emperor Dorrek VII ignored her warnings that Galactus
was coming for Throneworld. However, when they took over the world's governments, they
were lured into an open battle in Central Park, where she was easily killed by Earth's
defenders- Norman Obsorn fired the final shot. Ultimately, for all her importance, she's been
rather forgotten.
-Queen Veranke effectively combines Jessica Drew's power-set with that of a Skrull, and
adds some stuff that intergalactic leaders would have, like high charisma.

Responsibility (Nihilistic Sociopath)- Quentin is basically a hellraiser who rejects all
authority. He has repeatedly caused problems just for the sake of humiliating or troubling
others.
Responsibility (Ego)- Quentin believes he is the greatest thing going, and actively disrespects
others. He once got offended that Utopia was formed, because that was HIS idea first.
Relationship (Sophie Cuckoo)- Quentin loved Sophie, and was basically broken by the
revelation that she despised him.
-Quentine Quire is the leader of the Omega Gang, a "student rebellion" arc in Grant
Morrison's X-Men run. Your everday boring-ass "Omega Level Telepath" (seriously, how
many of these guys have there been?), he led a small group of students to revolt, wearing
costumes inspired by the "Mutant Overlord" drawings anti-mutant bigots had created as a
possible nightmare future, though the X-Men beat most of them pretty easily, and the
Stepford Cuckoos did some "Kick" (a mutant power-enhancing drug) to increase their Hive-
Mind's power to break him. He ended up "evolving" a new mutant power and disappearing
thanks to some Xorn-related nonsense, and showed up a couple more times doing weird
vague villainous things. He's a threatening character, but kind of prone to Morrison-esque
weird stories.
-In recent years, Jason Aaron has taken a liking to him, and kind of portrayed him as a more
Enfante Terrible kind of hell-raising youth, and actually succeeds in making him kind of fun
to read about. I mean, think of how WRONG this kind of character could turn out- he could
have easily come across like a stupid Mary Sue or like those characters that are popular on
TV who basically live out the nerdy writers' fantasies of saying and doing whatever they want
without ever getting their comeuppance (think Roger from American Dad, possibly my least-
favourite TV character in history). He could have basically stolen the spotlight from every
single other character and ruined Wolverine and the X-Men. But he's actually a pretty fun
character DESPITE basically taking over the book at times (it's equal parts Wolverine, Quire,
Kitty & The Hellfire Kids), in that his nihilism is directed at the right targets (Wolverine
acting as a Headmaster, villains, or that time he Mind Controlled all the world leaders into
humiliating themselves with confessions of their darkest secrets). Plus they're basically sort-
of redeeming him, in that he acts like a giant tool, but ALSO tries to save the lives of some
people.
-Unfortunately, they kinda bungled it, as post-Aaron he got a run in a REALLY short-lived
"Sequel Series" that... just plain didn't need to exist (it lasted a handful of issues until
Wolverine died, ending the book- I had a subscription at the local shop and received a few
before reading any, and it was too late to cancel it by the time the book ended- maybe one
issue was good). It dealt with Quentin being rebellious AGAIN, becoming a member of the
new Hellfire Club, and it kind of farted along and got the axe. Quentin hasn't reappeared for
some time. And reading online shows that a few fans DID think he was way-overdone in
Wolvie & The X-Men, so he's got a bad rep on him.

Motivation (Self-Improvement)- Karl is obsessed with becoming greater- he used to wach the
entire football game on replay just so he could figure out his own mistakes.
-Quick Kick was a short-lived personal nemesis of SuperPro- an old football teammate, Karl
Moore was obsessed with being the best, and had a personal rivalry with Phil "SuperPro"
Grayfield from their playing days- this being a parallel universe where black athletes aspire to
be as good as their white teammates. Like most failed athletes, Karl soon became a ninja
enforcer, and he recognized Phil in-costume because he never forgets the way people move
and stuff. Of course, considering that Phil DOESN'T COVER HIS FACE when he wears his
costume would probably be an important factor here, but Karl's all like "HAHAH I NEVER
FORGET A FACE, GUY WHOSE FACE ANYONE WHO'S EVER PLAYED WITH HIM
SHOULD RECOGNIZE!". He was presumed dead after falling from an airplane, and we
never saw him again, though I, for one, plan on including him in tons of background scenes
should I ever become a real comic book artist.
-Curiously, Phil (pre-SuperPro) called him "Stu" twice during the flashback part of the issue-
by the time we see him in modern times, Phil identifies him as "Karl? KARL MOORE?!"
Methinks neither the writer nor the editor gave a rat's ass, even by issue 2 of this book.
-Quick Kick is basically a PL 7 Ninja-type dude, quite strong but not exactly well-rounded.

Weakness (Sand)- Being made of sand & earth has it's flaws. Quicksand is vulnerable to
extreme heat (turning into glass, where it is much harder to move), powerful air currents
(they will blow her away or spread her particles far too wide), and water (she will become a
sluggish "Mud Woman" and unable to use many attacks).
-Quicksand is basically a one-note female rip-off of the Sandman, brawling with Thor once,
and then falling straight into the ranks of "Uneffective D-League Villains". She was a
scientist working at a nuclear facility who gained powers in an accident of some kind,
basically turning into a Sandwoman. With great difficulty adjusting to her new form, she
lashes out at the nuclear reactor in a rage, eventually causing a meltdown, despite the
intervention of Thor- he has to teleport it to another dimension to save the day. She later
allies with Mongoose & Count Tagar against Thor, in promise of being cured, but it fails. She
has since become a minor background super-criminal, appearing in The Superia Stratagem
storyline, where she actually got to beat up on Anaconda from the Serpent Society for a bit,
but otherwise didn't do anything.
-She later works for the Egyptian God Seth, who allies her with Bison & Mongoose (other
minor Thor foes) against Thunderstrike, Luke Cage, and a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Alex DePaul.
Bison has a crisis of conscience and turns on his allies, thus buying himself freedom. She's
later seen as part of the Crimson Cowl's huge Masters of Evil team in Thunderbolts, and
fighting Spider-Man and The Sandman at once. In modern times, she appeared as an
involuntary-Thunderbolt post-Civil War, as part of Delaware's Women Warriors "Initiative"
team, and as part of Siege's Assault on Asgard. She is later imprisoned on The Raft and
broken out, but is beaten by Thor Girl & Cloud 9. Later, she escapes again, but is beaten by
Rogue & Mimic.
-Basically Sandman-Lite, but much less general power- she's a half-decent PL 9, but falls
well short of William Baker. She has a pretty decent Burst Area Sand-Blast power, can sorta-
fly, and she can grow real big (but gains none of the benefits regarding strength or toughness-
it's just her dispersed to be larger, so I just declare that to be Elongation, really).

Reputation (Enormous Tool)- Pietro is a very unpleasant person to be around, even when he's
a super-hero. He also does some very evil things- it was he who set of The House of M, by
manipulating his sister.
Relationship (The Scarlet Witch)- Pietro is extremely overprotective of his sister, and doesn't
like her hanging around with guys he doesn't approve of. It... can get creepy.
Relationship (Crystal- Ex-Wife)- Pietro married a member of the Inhuman Royal Family, but
he neglected her for some Inhuman Militia because he's a tool, and so she cheated on him
with A NORMAL HUMAN (the guy who sold Vision & The Scarlet Witch their house).
Relationship (Luna- Daughter)- Pietro rarely sees his human little girl, who usually stays with
her mom.
Responsibility (Trapped in a Slow World)- Quicksilver is frequently annoyed by how slow
everyone else around him moves. He says it's like constantly being stuck in line behind
somebody who doesn't know how to use an ATM.
Secret (It Wasn't a Skrull)- Quicksilver used The Secret Invasion to blame a Skrull imposter
for various illegal and immoral actions of his- only a few others know that this is a lie.
Relationship (Magneto- Father)- Quicksilver's father is the most infamous Mutant who has
ever lived, and a notorious villain. Pietro was once beholden to him, but eventually rejected
his father, only to fall victim to villainy's embrace himself.
-Quicksilver was only on the Brotherhood for a short while, wearing that ugly green shirt
with the lightning bolt on it, and joined the "Cap's Kooky Quartet" fairly quickly, but his
impatient, angry-young-man act made him a poor team player at times, often figuring HE
should be the leader. As Hawkeye also specialized in being "That Guy", his role was a bit
taken. Both he and his sister leave the book after Wanda is shot during a fight with Magneto,
however, and they are taken by him back to one of his bases, finally realizing he's completely
evil after a fight with the X-Men. The team later rejoined the Avengers when Wanda was
kidnapped by Arkon, and underwent their next major stories- Roy Thomas had Wanda fall
for the Vision, and Quicksilver ended up falling for Crystal of the Inhumans after she nursed
him back to health following an injury against the Sentinels. This stole her away from the
Human Torch (though to be fair, their coupling was ideally a "star-crossed lovers" situation),
and would eventually result in the birth of a daughter. Finally, writer Bill Mantlo undid the
"obvious", that the Maximoffs were the children of Magneto, and said that their parents were
the Golden Age Whizzer & Miss America, with Robert "Whizzer" Frank having refused them
at birth when his wife died in labor. Around this time, Pietro picks up his signature powder-
blue uniform, making him one of the only heroes to dress like that.
-Quicksilver later befuddles the Avengers when Maximus the Mad controls his mind and
makes him go nuts. The Avengers are framed for treason while he beats the hell out of them
(proving impossible to hold down), then arrested by Freedom Force. Only being shown
images of his newborn nephews make him settle down, but he reappears in West Coast
Avengers and fights the team again before finally being cured by the Inhumans. At some
point in all this, he and Crystal divorce, never reconciling after her affair.
Quicksilver in X-Factor:
-Quicksilver was then one of many "Island of Misfit Toy" mutants chosen for Peter David's
popular (but lower-selling X-book) X-Factor- as probably the least-used important mutant (I
mean, he's the SON OF MAGNETO and by this point he'd been off a major team book for
more than ten years). Here, David actually details just WHY Pietro is such a dick- in a
brilliant issue where Doc Samson is sitting down with the team and investigating their mental
health, Pietro bluntly confesses that he's a short-tempered asshole who has an issue with
patience. And in an amazing bit of dialogue, points out that all of the "little things" that annoy
regular people about each other- like idiot clerks who can't understand "Whopper. No
Pickles" or can't work a cash machine- are exacerbated a hundred-fold with him, and asks
him to imagine "A world where everyone you work with everywhere you go... your entire
WORLD... is filled with people who can't work cash machines". This went a long way to
improve the character in the minds of the fans... so of course once David was gone,
Quicksilver got f'd around with again.
-During the BloodTies crossover in which Luna is threatened by Fabian Cortez for being the
human granddaughter of mutant icon Magneto, Quicksilver quits the X-books as well as the
Avengers- learning that Crystal is now seeing the Black Knight helps that decision. He takes
Luna and actually stars in his OWN BOOK, which even in 1997 I thought was completely
insane. Here, the entire thing centers around the High Evolutionary and his Knights of
Wundagore, and involve fights against Magneto-worshipping Exodus and the Man-Beast.
Yes, an ENTIRE BOOK centered around the Evolutionary- wonder why it only lasted 13
issues? I think half of my Wundagore builds involved characters from this series, too. Pietro
is briefly powered-up with "Isotope E" and then rejoins the Avengers for Kurt Busiek's run
on the book, but only as a side character in a roster that hit a peak during the "Kang War" that
ended Busiek's run. However, he appears in Avengers (vs) Justice League, the huge
Marvel/DC crossover, almost entirely because he's the only guy at Marvel who can really
match up with The Flash. Busiek shows the obvious- that their levels are MILES apart- yet
also has Flash lose power on Marvel Earth, and Pietro access the Speed Force on DC Earth.
-Later, it's revealed that the twins are NOT Magneto's children, and instead the experiments
of the High Evolutionary, and Quicksilver joins the Avengers Unity Squad. And immediately
after this, and Pietro's attempts at redemption, another writer decides to have Wanda reject
him during Civil War II and say his constant inability to learn from his mistakes marks him as
a sociopath- the twins fight and Wanda sends him away, but they reconcile when they defeat
an embodiment of Chaos and meet their birth mother before she dies. He was himself thought
dead in a big Avengers arc that crossed all three books, but was quickly found trapped in
another dimension.
Quicksilver Overall:
-Like his sister, Quicksilver has largely been pigeonholed as "That hero who always goes
evil", but in this case, it's his general douchebag behavior (which often went so spiteful and
whiny that even in the MARVEL UNIVERSE he stood out as a guy who didn't fit in with a
group) that made it so easy for people to write in a "Quicksilver does something awful" arc.
These ended up dogpiling very quickly, with every new writer simply ignoring the last story's
"Pietro decides to do good from now on" moment and Scrubsing him back into his prior
characterization. I mean, it's tough, I suppose, when the guy hasn't been an active Avenger for
more than a couple of years since the 1960s- Wanda surpassed him as a character SO badly,
and he just got screwed around after that point. It's odd, because I wrote him off as a "rarely
used" guy, but if you see it... he was in The Avengers twice, then supported on the FF book,
then a few other runs here and there, then a SOLO BOOK, then Avengers again, then played
a role in several big events like House of M... it's just too bad he's always shown up by his
sister, and undergoes the same stories over and over again. The nature of the medium if
you're a side character who's too important to just ignore, I guess- most heroes are lucky and
just go into limbo... as the son of MAGNETO, Quicksilver almost HAD to be used. And
you'll note that he's been a minor nobody since THAT was written out.
-In the end, the character has fairly few fans- his appearance and powers aren't cool enough to
make up for his shitty attitude (again, even by Marvel standards), which left most people cold
on him- none of the kids I know liked Quicksilver, and he was always seen as annoying,
dumb-looking and a jerk. And not the FUN kind, either- guys like Wildfire or Wolverine
were jerks, but were at least FUNNY and flat-out aggressive bad-asses to make up for it...
Quicksilver was a WHINER.
Quicksilver's Powers:
-Power-wise, Pietro's pretty easy to stat, and his powers are pretty explicitly given in the
comics (Supersonic speed, but much less than the near-Light Speed Force users of DC), so
he's easy there. I gave him a handful of the Alt-Effects there too, including a Cyclone
Suffocation, Multiattack punches, a pushing stream, a Whirlwind Attack that hits everyone,
and the ability to Deflect projectile attacks. He's not entirely efficient for his PL (Defensive
Roll is much worse than Protection, and he makes PL 10.5 on offense), but he's still not
someone to screw around with in combat. He's harder to hit than fricking SPIDER-MAN,
who is one of the defining "hard to hit" guys in all of comics, and he gains a metric ton of
Combat Advantages as a result of his Super-Speed, nearly all defensive. I actually upgraded
him since 2014, figuring that I've read issues where he houses entire Avengers squads-
Marvel was more clear than even DC as to what would happen if a Speedster came at you
with everything he had- nobody can lay a finger on him, and he can hammer anybody.
-For some reason, DCA's Flash has crappy hand-to-hand accuracy. Well, not CRAPPY, but
only +10, and this is a guy who's so fast, he can hit you before you even see him. So I gave
Quicksilver some really good hand-to-hand accuracy.

Reputation (Enormous Tool)- Pietro is a very unpleasant person to be around, even when he's
a super-hero. He also does some very evil things- it was he who set of The House of M, by
manipulating his sister.
Relationship (The Scarlet Witch)- Pietro is extremely overprotective of his sister, and doesn't
like her hanging around with guys he doesn't approve of. It... can get creepy.
Relationship (Crystal- Ex-Wife)- Pietro married a member of the Inhuman Royal Family, but
he neglected her for some Inhuman Militia because he's a tool, and so she cheated on him
with A NORMAL HUMAN (the guy who sold Vision & The Scarlet Witch their house).
Relationship (Luna- Daughter)- Pietro rarely sees his human little girl, who usually stays with
her mom.
Responsibility (Trapped in a Slow World)- Quicksilver is frequently annoyed by how slow
everyone else around him moves. He says it's like constantly being stuck in line behind
somebody who doesn't know how to use an ATM.
Secret (It Wasn't a Skrull)- Quicksilver used The Secret Invasion to blame a Skrull imposter
for various illegal and immoral actions of his- only a few others know that this is a lie.
Relationship (Magneto- Father)- Quicksilver's father is the most infamous Mutant who has
ever lived, and a notorious villain. Pietro was once beholden to him, but eventually rejected
his father, only to fall victim to villainy's embrace himself.

-Quill, one of many to share that name (the first was one of the Warpies in Captain Britain,
the third an arena fighter one-off in Wolverine, and the fourth a Backgrounder in The Young
X-Men), has pretty similar powers to the others- shooting quills. I figure he'd be quite painful
to the touch, but isn't nearly as quill-covered as, say, the X-Student by the same name. Quill,
thanks to a unique appearance, got to show up in an Acts of Vengeance issue featuring tons of
villains fighting the Fantastic Four, under Doctor Doom's Mind Control. He was last seen
being led to The Vault following that storyline's end. He can either throw the Quills, or just
make people feel pain when they grab him.

-Quill, for such a bad name, is a REALLY common one in Marvel Comics, showing up on
FOUR characters so far, including this one, a minor background guy in the X-Students roster.
Oddly, almost all of them are mutants. He was a Corsair (Cyclops' students), but then got
caught stealing some test paper answers by Kitty Pryde, who sent him to be punished by
Gambit (who, of course, being Gambit, taught them some REAL thieving techniques). That
was about it for him, as he was De-Powered, then killed via Busplosion. Well, it wasn't like
"Quill Guy" was a necessary power-set to show up in comics, and he likely never would've
amounted to anything, but the fact that twenty named characters died in one casual moment
of killing still seems amazing, even for comics.
-And for the record, Quill I was one of the "Warpies" created by the Jasper's Warp in Captain
Britain, and was frequently used by various evil people and government agencies (but I'm
being reduntant), before being depowered by the Captain. Quill II was a member of the
Resistants, added after most of the others (who were former minions of Magneto in the
Captain America book- this was during the time when X-Men had been cancelled). Quill III
was a combatant in "The Arena" during Claremont's X-Treme X-Men series. Pretty much
every one of them has identical powers to Quill IV here.
-A bit tougher than the usual run-of-the-mill student, Quill has a Multi-Blast (a rarity for this
team) and a minor Aura effect, and is a bit better at fighting than some, but is still a pretty
minor character. Note that there's a red-skinned uglier kid named Spike who was ALSO an
X-Student, and had identical powers minus the "Shooting" part, but made no reappearances
and is presumed dead.

Enemy (Dracula)- The Lord of Vampires has killed Quincy's wife, crippled him, then slew
the family of his mentor, Abraham Van Helsing. So it's kinda personal.
Disabled (Crippled)- Quincy is elderly, cannot move without the use of his wheelchair, and
has already suffered one heart attack.
-Quincy Harker is the protege of Abraham Van Helsing (of Dracula fame), and became a
recurring nemesis for the villainous Dracula in Tomb of Dracula. However, he'd been
crippled and left wheelchair-bound, and his wife killed. With some Comic-Booky touches,
he'd made his wheelchair into a moving Anti-Vampire Arsenal and left deathtraps all over the
family mansion. He also took in Abraham's orphaned grandchild Rachel, turning her into a
vampire hunter as well. And of course all of these deaths and maimings were the result of
Dracula. Knowing his own death awaited, he plunged a silver stake into Drac's heart, then his
time bomb went off, demolishing the castle and killing Harker. Dracula ultimately resurfaced,
but Quincy's bones acted as a lethal deterrent to vampires attempting to enter the British
Isles- they all had to be invited in. Important to MI-13's plans to protect Britain was Dracula
destroying a fake set of bones, thus resulting in the immolation of his army.

-Peculiarly, despite the fame of the Celestial Madonna storyline in Steve Englehart's
Avengers run, and the somewhat-notoriety of his beloved Mantis, the entire POINT of the
thing (ie. her being the mother of the supposed messiah) is largely-glossed-over as a mere
plot point and excuse for people to start fighting. Mantis is revealed as the Celestial
Madonna, and runs off to marry a tree possessed by the original Swordsman... but you never
really hear about the kid, do you?
-I think a great deal of that is Englehart's somewhat-salty relationship with Marvel, and the
fact that he rarely gained traction on many books. That and the fact that even he seemed to
barely care about the kid. These two things together meant that Mantis's appearances were
few and far between, especially since Englehart was notably the ONLY WRITER WHO
USED HER. And I don't think he called "dibs"- he was just the only one who cared. I mean,
in his Silver Surfer run, Mantis dumps "Sequoia" off on his father's people (the Cotati, not
Jobber Villains) and runs off with the Surfer on an interstellar adventure... like, this kid is SO
IMPORTANT she doesn't even bother to raise him? Or did Englehart just write himself into a
corner and realized too late he made a story to feature his big Pet Character and ended it in a
way that ties her down with a kid?
-Soon taking the nickname "Quoi", the boy was raised largely by the Cotati, and appeared
going through a rebellious teenage phase, sorta like Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (he's
a plant, so his aging is all F'd up. Also, it's Comic Book Aging). His nature as the Messiah
leads to him being targeted by Thanos, who captures Quoi and his mother. The Avengers get
involved (this story is called The Celestial Quest), and soon they have to team up WITH
Thanos because some creature called "The Rot" has attacked them. Quoi, having fallen in
love with a woman named Raptra, decides to run off with her in order to help the people of
the part of space The Rot affected. He has never been seen since, as only Englehart seems to
care. This is, remember, the CELESTIAL MESSIAH- a character so important that the Kree,
Thanos, and Kang the Conqueror are all obsessed with him... and he's just this side-character
even Englehart barely cared about, and was written out as soon as possible.
-I can't really determine his level that well, though it seems clear he can be rather powerful-
he's apparently absorbed and redirected a Blast from Thanos. His "Channel Life Forces"
power is a bit vague, but makes him a Blaster/Healer who can also use Comprehend- he's PL
9 normally, and PL 11 when he fully-absorbs power. Not bad, all in all, but a bit limited in
terms of skills thanks to youthful immaturity.

-Sporting the most ridiculous name of the Avatars (why does a Chinese villain use "Xtreme
Kool Letterz"?), Q'Wake was huge and had seismic shock powers. He was the most arrogant
of the Avatars, often talking smack, but he never succeeded in anything. In Heroes For Hire,
he was easily defeated by Tarantula (Maria Vasquez).
