It might be intimidating to learn anything new. Learning to swim was one of the most difficult
tasks I've ever faced. I've always been frightened of water, but I've determined that swimming is
a valuable skill to acquire. I also believed it would be good exercise and aid in my physical
development. I didn't understand it at the time, but learning to swim would make me more self-
assured.
I'm often a little hesitant in new circumstances, and my first swimming class was no exception. I
stood nervously at the edge of the pool after changing into my swimming suit in the locker room,
waiting for the teacher and other participants to arrive. After a few moments, the teacher
approached. Two other students joined us after he smiled and introduced himself. They didn't
seem ashamed of not knowing how to swim, despite the fact that they were both older than me. I
started to feel more relaxed.
We entered the pool, and the teacher instructed us to put on brightly colored water wings to aid
with our flotation. May, one of the other participants, had previously completed the beginner
session, so he grabbed a kickboard and went splashing off on his own. The other student and I
were instructed to hang on to the pool's edge and were shown how to kick for the breaststroke.
The teacher had us each hang on to a kickboard while he dragged it through the water while we
kicked. The other student was soon off on his own, speeding across the shallow end of the pool.
Things were not easy for me, but the teacher was really kind. He taught me the arm strokes after
a few more weeks, when I seemed to have gotten the hang of the leg strokes. Now I had to focus
on two things: my arms and my legs. I was terribly out of sync. Things began to feel "correct"
and I was able to swim sooner than I expected. It was a magnificent sensation to be able to blast
across the sea, almost as if I were flying.
Learning to swim was not easy for me, but perseverance paid off in the end. I not only learned to
swim and overcame my fear of water, but I also learned a thing or two about learning. When
confronted with a new situation, I am no longer as nervous. I may be uncomfortable at first, but I
know that as I practice being in that scenario and improve my talents, I will become more at
ease. When you fulfill a goal, you've set for yourself, it's a fantastic, liberating feeling.
