1. INTRODUCTION
This Method statement is intended to ensure that the supply and installation of industrial back up
batteries works operational activities are carried out in a safe and systematic manner with accordance to
client’s specification and that only authorized or competent persons will carry out work

2. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Safe Work Method Statement is to ensure site personnel are aware and aligned on
the delivery approach of the batteries

The primary objectives are:

Adherence to safety, health environmental and quality requirements, and standards

The protection of the employees

To prevent the loss or damage to property. However, this issue is secondary and is to be considered
only after personnel safety is insured.

To ensure conformance to the regulations as prescribed.

The description of the works includes but is not limited to the following:

(1) Lot A Design, Engineering, Supply, Construction, Installation, testing and Commissioning of
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a minimum of 35MW/140 MWh of usable capacity and
energy, including 5 Years Plants Operation and Maintenance Services and the associated Network
Integration Equipment at Eskom Melkhout Substations. Koega Local Municipality, Eastern Cape, South

Lot B Design, Engineering, Supply, Construction, and Installation, testing and commissioning of a 2.04
MW Photovoltaic System, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a minimum of 1.54 MW/6.16
MWh of usable capacity and energy including 5 Years Plant Operation and Maintenance Services, the
associated Network Integration Equipment, Capacitor Banks on the Wessel Klipkop 22kV line,
Telecommunications Equipment and a 33kV Loop In-Loop-Out Connection on the existing Rietfontein
33kV line including approximately 700m of new 33kV line to the new Mier Substation at Mier
Rietfontein Near Rietfontein in the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality (Dawid Kruiper Local

4. SCOPE

5. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

All equipment to be pre-inspected.

All employees to be inducted by Nexnovo TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND ENERGY


STORAGE SERVICES
Risk Assessment will be conducted prior to work being carried out and all hazards to be communicated
to the employees working on the task.

Employees will always wear the required PPE as indicated on safety signage.

There will be a full-time supervision on the sections of the work .


No work will commence if the Method Statement has not been approved by all parties.

All truck drivers to have valid medical, training, and psychometric evaluation.

5.1. PPE Requirements

Hardhat

Safety Shoes

Goggles

Overall

Reflective Vest

Gumboots when required

Gloves (leather + PVC)

Face shield when required

Safety harnesses where required

Face Masks

6. ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee, contractor / will take all reasonable measures to minimize their impact on the
environment.

All spillages will be reported immediately to the CHS officer or supervisor.

Immediate notification will be sent through to the ECO if an environmental incident occurs.

Spills shall be contained, and contaminated soil shall be bagged and disposed of as per Spill Procedure.

Regular inspections will be carried out by the ECO.

Equipment using diesel or petrol will have drip trays or have drip trays placed underneath them when
parked.

Employees to be trained in spill response.

All hazardous chemicals to have valid 16-point MSDS sheets accompanying it.

Chemical containers to be properly labelled and identified.

Receive copy of Integrated Environmental Authorization (IEA) before work starts from Client.

Receive EMPr from client and compile mitigation plan before work commences.

Identify and list all aspects and impacts that will be applicable to the project using the EMPr.

Compile and implement EMPr mitigation plan.

Receive a copy of the registered dumping site that will be used for waste/spill disposal.
7. QUALITY REQUIREMENTS

Inspection test plans to be drawn up and approved by all parties.

Client inspections request to be submitted when inspections are required.

Delivery notes to be collected when batteries are delivered to site.

Work to be done according to scope of work,

The following requirements must be adhered to before the task may commence:

The trucks must have valid certification

All defects must be reported to the Supervisor.

The truck drivers must be medically fit, and proof must be on file (Site and Truck).

The operator must be in position of a valid driving permit. This permit will be attached in the safety file.

Employees to wear required PPE, gloves, dust masks, and safety boots.

The Site Supervisor to ensure a risk assessment is conducted and signed by all employees.

A daily risk assessment and tool-box talks will be conducted before any work may commence. All
hazards and risk will be communicated to the employees and signed off.

8. SPECIFIC STRUCTURE FOR DELIVERY OF BATTRIES

Driver arrives at site and announces himself at gate.


Operational site staff allow entry.
Driver proceeds to battery installation area observing speed limit.
Driver pulls up alongside the installation area and puts on appropriate
PPE Hi Visibility jacket or bib, overalls, and safety boots.
Driver proceeds to Controllers office and confirms with site staff the
correct delivery place
The battery equipment will be off loaded by a crane fitted to the truck
and put in timber boards off the ground

BATTERY INSTALLATION
The battery storage plant will be sourced from FIRST NATIONAL BATTERY .

First National battery , will come to site with all equipment and install it on site.

They will issue operation manuals, Certificates of compliance etc to Nexnovo , Nexnovo Will issue
these to Eskom Project manager. The works will then be inspected by the professional team
representing the clients.

Upon all test have been done , the works will handed over to the client, Nexnovo will then a one day
training for all staff workers from the client

10. CONCLUSION

All battery delivery work shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant flammable substances
delivery specifications and in compliance with the Health and Safety Specifications as well as the
Environmental Management Programme.
