Road accidents are a major problem in Ethiopia, with thousands of people losing

their lives every year due to avoidable mistakes. The number of fatalities is very
high especially compared to other nations but there is a relative improvement as
compared to the past of our country, and it's clear that urgent action is needed to
address this issue. The Ethiopian government has already taken some steps to
improve road safety, such as introducing legislation to reduce speed limits and
introducing seat-belt laws which are implemented in recent time.

However, more needs to be done to ensure that Ethiopian roads are safe for its
users. Roads and proper transport infrastructure are also very valuable for a
country especially a developing one like Ethiopia thus more emphasis and work
needs to be done on the safety and security of these critical infrastructures.

In order to reduce road accidents, it is essential to set up benchmark measures in

order to improve road safety. The objective of benchmarking is to assess the
performance of road safety initiatives and identify the areas which need
improvement. It helps to compare the performance of different countries in
terms of the number of road accidents and the effectiveness of the road safety
measures. The first step towards benchmarking is to identify the areas where
road safety initiatives are required. This can be done by analyzing the accident
data of the developed nations as well as the global data. The data should include
the number of accidents, the types of accidents, the causes of accidents and the
severity of the accidents. This data can then be used to compare the performance
of our nation in terms of road safety initiatives of developed nations in the west
and other parts of the world where road accidents are low.

According to the World Health Organization, there is an estimated rate of 36.2

road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in Ethiopia. This staggering number is due
to various factors, including poor road infrastructure, limited enforcement of
traffic rules, and a lack of awareness about road safety. The most common causes
of road accidents in Ethiopia include reckless driving, overloading of vehicles, and
poor road conditions. Reckless driving is particularly common, with drivers often
ignoring traffic rules and regulations. Also another major player in this specific
case is driving under the influence of intoxicants like alcohol as it leaves many
families of victims in a dire situation especially if it is a working member which
even leads to more chaos within the society as the families are left in a vulnerable
situation. Overloading of vehicles is another major cause of accidents, as it can
lead to reduced control and visibility, resulting in accidents. In addition, poor road
conditions, such as inadequate road signage and lack of maintenance, can also
lead to accidents.

It is very necessary to invest in better roads and infrastructure. Many roads in

Ethiopia are in poor condition, with potholes, uneven surfaces and no markings,
making it difficult for drivers to navigate. By investing in better roads, drivers
would be able to drive more safely and reduce the risk of accidents. Additionally,
the government could introduce more stringent laws on the use of mobile phones
while driving, as this is a major cause of accidents in Ethiopia.

Another solution is to educate drivers about the importance of road safety.

Ethiopia has a large number of young drivers who may not be aware of the risks
involved in driving. By running campaigns to educate drivers about the dangers of
unsafe driving, the government could help to reduce the number of road
accidents. Additionally, the government could invest in training courses for
drivers, to ensure that they are competent and knowledgeable when driving on
the roads.

The government could invest in better emergency services. When an accident

does occur, it is important that the victim receives immediate medical attention.
By investing in better ambulances and hospitals, the government could ensure
that victims receive the care they need. Additionally, the government could
introduce stricter enforcement of traffic laws, to ensure that drivers are following
the rules of the road. The government has implemented a number of measures to
improve road safety. For example, the Ministry of Transport and Communication
is working to upgrade existing roads and build new ones. The government has
also developed a national road safety strategy, which includes initiatives such as
increasing awareness of road safety, improving driver training and education, and
introducing stricter enforcement of traffic laws. These measures are expected to
reduce the number of road accidents in Ethiopia. Nevertheless, it is also
mandatory to consider other solutions, such as improving driver education and
training, as well as developing public transportation systems. These solutions can
help reduce the number of road accidents and make Ethiopian roads safer for all.
Ultimately, the solution to the problem of road accidents in Ethiopia lies in a
combination of infrastructure improvements, public awareness, and better
enforcement of traffic laws.

The Ethiopian government needs to take urgent action to reduce the number of
road accidents in the country. This can be achieved by investing in better roads,
educating drivers about the importance of road safety, and investing in better
emergency services. By taking these steps, the government could help to save
lives and ensure that Ethiopian roads are safer for everyone.

These are viable benchmarks that can be used to positively compare the statistics
of our country from that of countries with much lower road accident rates. As
these initiatives can be used as a means of lowering the rate of accidents and
using them as a guide line for forming better and safer roads.

Another major solution that is mostly overlooked but plays a significant role in
road and transport accidents is the idea of urban planning and city design as a
substantial amount of accidents pay there tolls in city and urban areas. These
areas have a significant amount of people living in them and constantly moving
from one place to another in a much more congested and smaller space.
Especially in developing countries like our country Ethiopia there is a lack of well
designed urban and metropolitan areas and a lack of proper functioning cities
that can hold the population in general.
This situation leads to the overpopulation of certain cities and urban areas which
in turn increases the risks of road accidents on a much higher level.

The harmful effects of road transport need to be taken more into account in
urban planning. In France, which can also be used as a benchmark for city
planning in our country the road safety has become the priority for urban travel
plans since the new law was passed in 2000. As a result, urban planners may be
led to question how their choices influence road safety: what are the impacts of
the different urban forms? Is it safer to separate means of transport (i.e.: using
pedestrian and cycle paths) or to share the street? While the influence of urban
planning on road safety is a major issue, very little has been done and considered
on the subject. This study is based on the analysis of urban forms, which are used
to illustrate urban planning concepts and their evolution. The relationship
between urban spaces and road safety is complex. Studies have shown that most
collisions were along the main highways. Commercial, residential, and
recreational land uses positively influenced traffic crashes. Informal stops, traffic
sign visibility, road condition, footpath/setback encroachments, and green belt
availability also affected accident density. The study highlights the need to
consider urban form and design factors for road accident prevention and
management. It therefore involves taking into account the dynamic nature of
urban spaces and, in particular, improvements that can be made to the road
network

In general, the road traffic flow of central urban areas is larger than that of
suburbs, so the probability that traffic accidents occurring at a central business
district is larger than that of surrounding suburban areas. With the increased
distance from the city center, the number of accidents also reduce sharply. Also,
the road environment has a significant effect on the traffic accident, and those
roads that are close to each other have similar road conditions. For instance,
roads in close proximity have similar traffic flow characteristics, so the accident is
often clustered together.
In conclusion, considering the contemporary situations of our country Ethiopia
and its relatively young age in urbanization we poses a great opportunity in
shaping the future of the country in relative to road accidents as the cites and
urban centers that are yet to be built in the countries future have a great solution
in reducing these accidents by building new urban areas and erecting new cities
by building them in accordance to planning and design that suits the safe and
secure road transportation measures and even utilizing proper laws , frameworks
and infrastructure that supports safe transportation within the country.
