their lives every year due to avoidable mistakes. The number of fatalities is very
high especially compared to other nations but there is a relative improvement as
compared to the past of our country, and it's clear that urgent action is needed to
address this issue. The Ethiopian government has already taken some steps to
improve road safety, such as introducing legislation to reduce speed limits and
introducing seat-belt laws which are implemented in recent time.
However, more needs to be done to ensure that Ethiopian roads are safe for its
users. Roads and proper transport infrastructure are also very valuable for a
country especially a developing one like Ethiopia thus more emphasis and work
needs to be done on the safety and security of these critical infrastructures.
The Ethiopian government needs to take urgent action to reduce the number of
road accidents in the country. This can be achieved by investing in better roads,
educating drivers about the importance of road safety, and investing in better
emergency services. By taking these steps, the government could help to save
lives and ensure that Ethiopian roads are safer for everyone.
These are viable benchmarks that can be used to positively compare the statistics
of our country from that of countries with much lower road accident rates. As
these initiatives can be used as a means of lowering the rate of accidents and
using them as a guide line for forming better and safer roads.
Another major solution that is mostly overlooked but plays a significant role in
road and transport accidents is the idea of urban planning and city design as a
substantial amount of accidents pay there tolls in city and urban areas. These
areas have a significant amount of people living in them and constantly moving
from one place to another in a much more congested and smaller space.
Especially in developing countries like our country Ethiopia there is a lack of well
designed urban and metropolitan areas and a lack of proper functioning cities
that can hold the population in general.
This situation leads to the overpopulation of certain cities and urban areas which
in turn increases the risks of road accidents on a much higher level.
The harmful effects of road transport need to be taken more into account in
urban planning. In France, which can also be used as a benchmark for city
planning in our country the road safety has become the priority for urban travel
plans since the new law was passed in 2000. As a result, urban planners may be
led to question how their choices influence road safety: what are the impacts of
the different urban forms? Is it safer to separate means of transport (i.e.: using
pedestrian and cycle paths) or to share the street? While the influence of urban
planning on road safety is a major issue, very little has been done and considered
on the subject. This study is based on the analysis of urban forms, which are used
to illustrate urban planning concepts and their evolution. The relationship
between urban spaces and road safety is complex. Studies have shown that most
collisions were along the main highways. Commercial, residential, and
recreational land uses positively influenced traffic crashes. Informal stops, traffic
sign visibility, road condition, footpath/setback encroachments, and green belt
availability also affected accident density. The study highlights the need to
consider urban form and design factors for road accident prevention and
management. It therefore involves taking into account the dynamic nature of
urban spaces and, in particular, improvements that can be made to the road
network
In general, the road traffic flow of central urban areas is larger than that of
suburbs, so the probability that traffic accidents occurring at a central business
district is larger than that of surrounding suburban areas. With the increased
distance from the city center, the number of accidents also reduce sharply. Also,
the road environment has a significant effect on the traffic accident, and those
roads that are close to each other have similar road conditions. For instance,
roads in close proximity have similar traffic flow characteristics, so the accident is
often clustered together.
In conclusion, considering the contemporary situations of our country Ethiopia
and its relatively young age in urbanization we poses a great opportunity in
shaping the future of the country in relative to road accidents as the cites and
urban centers that are yet to be built in the countries future have a great solution
in reducing these accidents by building new urban areas and erecting new cities
by building them in accordance to planning and design that suits the safe and
secure road transportation measures and even utilizing proper laws , frameworks
and infrastructure that supports safe transportation within the country.
