The document outlines three physics labs to be completed by students - Lab 7 examines the conversion of potential to kinetic energy using cars on an inclined track, Lab 8 looks at elastic and inelastic collisions between cars with magnets, and Lab 9 has students simulate circular motion online and calculate speed and radius. The labs are assigned to be completed between October 28th and November 19th with results due on the 19th in one PDF file. Groups are assigned different speed and radius combinations to use in the circular motion simulation.

Lab 7: Energy storage and transfer: Kinetic energy
The student will determine and compare how the potential energy will be converted into kinetic energy from releasing a car of known mass. The experiment will examine two variables: two different inclination heights with same car mass; two different car masses with same track inclination. The car will be released from rest, the final velocity before stopping will be obtained using a Vernier Motion Detector. What are the heights and angles of inclination of the track? What are the masses of the car in both experiments? What would be the results if we change both mass and inclination? What are the calculations to show that experimental data is accurate?
Lab 8: Momentum and collisions
The student will examine elastic and inelastic collisions using a leveled track and two cars with magnets. The kinematic data will be obtained using a Vernier Motion Detector The cars will have magnets to help simulate inelastic and elastic collisions. For elastic collisions, the student will show that the energy will be transferred with cars of similar mass and cars with different masses. For inelastic collisions, the student will measure the average velocities and determine the energy lost (not conserved, if any) during the collision.
Lab 9: Circular Motion (simulation)
The students will go to the following website: http://physics.bu.edu/~duffy/HTML5/circular_motion.html and run the simulation at two different sets of speed and radius respectively. Each group will run the simulation with the selected speed and radius. each group will demonstrate with equations and calculations that the information provided in the simulation is correct. In the conclusion, the group will determine if the objective was accomplished and will compare the results in both experiments.
Selected speed and radius to run the simulation per group.
