The speaker begins their speech by introducing themselves and stating that they will argue that social media influencers are not beneficial to society. They provide several examples to support this claim. First, they discuss the American influencer Woah Vicky who faced backlash for pretending to be black and using racist language but was still rewarded with a music contract worth $1 billion due to her internet popularity. Next, they bring up the example of Bangladeshi TikTok influencer Hridoy who was charged with sexually abusing and trafficking young girls. Finally, they note that many influencers promote unhealthy body images, diet products, and plastic surgeries. Given these concerning behaviors being encouraged to audiences, the speaker asks the audience if influ

Assalamualaikum respected Sir and fellow classmates who have
joined today’s speaking session. My name is Humyra Talukder. I join
today with warm welcome in a rainy summer to you all. I would like to start my speech today confessing something. I love the internet. I love staying all day browsing the net, laughing at anything that is coined funny, catching a br match in call of duty and I know so do you all. Who doesn’t like a platform where you can are connected to the rest of the world despite being miles away? There is much to do on the net, you can look for information, you can look up on your buddies studying in abroad , you can also look up for content updates from your favourite influencer. Which brings me to my topic are social media influencers beneficial to the society. My partner Ummay Tohra had spoken in support of the speaking topic, however I like to be the villain hence I will be facing today’s topic as the Darth Vader, and claim that social media influencers are not beneficial to the society. The very first reasoning behind why I dare make such claims is because despite social media influencers have high exposure to a large population and can be used as an easy marketing source, most of this so called “Influencers” , a big majority of them have become popular due to some sort of moral or ethically wrong act For example the American influencer Woah Vicky became popular because she pretended to be a person a Black person despite clearly being a Caucasian. She portrayed racist behaviour such as pretending to have draids, talking with an African American accent , cussing publicly and using the N- word. She went viral when she posted a video where she found from ancestry.com that she was 25 percent black however, ancestry.com has reviews to give faulty and incorrect information. For a person who showed behaviour of cultural appropriation, racist actions, one would expect Woah Wicky to have some serious actions taken against her however due to her internet popularity she was given a music contract and now she has is a rapper with a net worth of 1 billion dollars. This is the way we have made society to be, reward such actions with positive reinforcements. For a person who did nothing but put up videos of her being racist ,she is rewarded with being 1 billion dollar worth rapper. And this is exactly what we teach younger children who are the consumer of Woah Vicky and other similar influencers, that is if you are racist, if you cuss, if you pretend to be something outreageous, you can too become a billion dollar worth influencer.Perhaps morality is subjective but being racist is not! If you think that an example of an American influencer is far too unrelatable to you, here is something that hits more close home. With the rise of apps like tiktok , there has been rise of influencer in our country . However with it rose many criminal activity. How come an app that is marketed towards teenagers be a platform for terrible criminal activities you may ask? 3 months back tiktoker Hridoy, a very well-known tiktoker in Bangladesh has been charged with trafficking and sexually abusing women. Multiple clips have been released online showcasing Hridoy sexually abusing and trafficking young girls to India. This kind of criminal behaviour is promoted to the audience. Finally, in an age where being glamorous, age of body dysmorphic an age where we promote unrealistic body images to the public, many influencers are known to heavily photoshop their images, they are also known to sell unhealthy diet ideas and products to their consumers to achieve something they did by altering themselves. Many beauty influencers are known to go through plastic surgery, get contracts with surgical companies just so that they can advocate their brands. Influencers Lauren Goodger, Mike Hassini, and Zara Holland promoted a fake weightless drink. The drink was described as a new kind of weightloss drink which would help you loose pounds weight however in reality it contained the lethal chemical hydrogen cyanide which damages the cardiovascular and heart system. Combing all the social media platform in the world today, there are 3.2 to 37.8 million social media influencers, and I took 3 examples out of many social media stars that exist. Encouraging ethically wrong behaviours, making trafficking and abuse of humans an ascendancy and selling false products and images, more than 45 percent of Instagram accounts are engaged in fraudulence. So, I ask you all, are influencers truly beneficial to the society? Will you let your younger siblings, cousins or even your own child watch these influencers at ease, hoping they could learn something? I conclude my speech to ask you all to go home and think whom and what are we truly following. Thank you very much for your kind attention.
“Filipinos are known for being highly engaged and opinionated, and with the flourish of social media, this allows a culture of individuals stating their ideas without accountability that could lead to cyber bullying and harassment.”
