DILEMMA OF DENGVAXIA

April 2016 when the Dengvaxia vaccine aiming to fight against the mosquito –
borne tropical disease, dengue, was launched in the Philippines- allegedly the reason of
the deaths of several children after being vaccinated.

Some dengue researchers predicted the risk of the vaccine; however, in 2017,
830, 000 children had already received at least one dose of the vaccine before the
Sinofi have changed its label to focus only to those who had already been exposed to
dengue.

In February 2018, the Philippine Public Attorney’s office filed a lawsuit against
government officials, executives of Sinofi, and distributor of Zuellig Pharma but it was
damaged when a 10 –year old child died after receiving the vaccine but had a pre-
existing condition.

Due to the fear of the Filipinos to vaccines, Philippines had a measle crisis in 2019.
Talking about its worse effect, Dengvaxia scandal left a stigma making the Filipino citizens
afraid of taking any kind of vaccine.
“Hanggang ngayon nakakatakot parin magtiwala sa mga vaccine na ‘yan. Tingnan
mo nga nangyari sa Dengvaxia no’n. Kaya kahit may vaccine na sa COVID, ‘di ako
magpapa-turok, baka mangisay nalang ako bigla,” Judy Ann Velasco said, a mother that has
a Dengvaxia vaccinated child.

The dilemma created by the Dengvaxia have really made the country shake in fear.
However, if no one will take the risk, the world will not have a progress that may lead to a
healthy and a happy virus- free community.
